Umm, and how exactly was this an experiment and not just two guys fucking around? What is their hypothesis? What are their conclusions? Where are the finely tuned experimental apparatus and measurement devices? The guys used a coke bottle for fuck's sake!
Ok, since you have decided to take this all so seriously, exactly what was the hypothesis of this experiment, and what conclusions did they come to? Or is this really just an excuse for people to fuck around in the vomit comet?
"You can create a record of your actions without actually tying that record to yourself."
There are two problems with this statement. First, even if this identity is not tied to yourself, it is possible to have investments in it, and thus you place some worth in it, for instance credit history. Second, if a singular identity system becomes standard on the internet, I would not be surprised in the least if the government passes legislation forcing internet identities to be tied to "real" identities. Even without this you would still have sticky situations like credit card and driver's license info that some sites may require and will tie the identity to you. You will need to be MEGA vigilent in creating a clear set of rules of how you use your anonymous identity in order to not reveal your true identity. Or you can just live in the woods.
As you can see by the very different replies to your posting, the understanding of the human brain is still very limited, and the problems are extremely varied.
This all stems from the fact that the mind is not part of the world, but the world is in fact part of the mind. Science itself leads to the inescapable fact that everything you are perceiving right now is actually a set of neurons firing in your brain, which leads to a paradox - You make an implicit assumption that your mind is outside of the universe and perceiving it as an objective observer, but in fact, you are about to cap the spouting well, so to speak - this is where subjectivity and objectivity meet. The mind is creating the universe through its perception, and the universe creates the mind through physical laws. This duality is seen at a microscopic level in quantum mechanics - a seeming paradox that is not immediately solvable through normal thought processes.
Anyway, the point being that the mind is a completely different organ from the rest, if it should even be called an organ. Perhaps the brain is the organ that connects the universe to the mind. In otherwords, there are actually two parallel realities (subjective mind, objective universe), and they are tied together by this fractal infinitely complex mind/brain junction.
OH MY GOD!!! You inadvertantly just proposed a solution to the dupe problem! Slashcode needs a baesian filter to check for dupes. Wouldn't this be the perfect application for this? Also, couldn't baesian filters be used for things like checking a bug database for dupes as well?
1. Why is everyone up in arms about Slashdot giving front-page space to a controversial flamer instead of a real journalist? You're eating Dvorak's flamebait like ants on honey. And perhaps Slashdot stories are also selected for controversy instead of content, hmmmm?
2. Perhaps there is a conflict of interest here. Dvorak's job is specifically to create commercially copyrighted content. His article is about how openly copyrighted content is shit. Anyone see a connection?
You're totally wrong on this. I'm sure you've been to a symphonic concert or a live rock show or whatever. Music is meant to be heard live with people around you. Listening alone to a recording is SO much weaker, but we often have no other choice than to do so. Don't you ever wish your friend is there during your favorite part of a song so they can experience the same adrenalin/seratonin rush as you?
I think the real difference between video and music is that you can do other things while listening to music, but you can't do anything else while watching video. If anything, music is MORE of a group activity.
2. a. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: "Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated" (Richard Kain).
I don't believe that it fits. Microsoft's behavior IS expected, and it doesn't match your example in quotes. The proper word is not ironic... I think it is HYPOCRISY.
If you are going to battle Nazis, make sure your footing is strong.
You know who they REALLY plagerized the Matrix from? The New Twilight Zone, specifically an episode from the first season, called "Dreams for Sale". See Here.
The story includes a person not knowing they are in a matrix, and waking up in a giant hive of reality creating machines, that looks suspisciously like the ones in the Matrix movies, except it's all white instead of all black. She even sees things repeating, just like the cat glitch in the first Matrix.
Except that this episode was shown in 1985... mega fishy if you ask me.
The ping times might suffer a little, though, I bet.
Why is that? Please forgive my ignorance, but I never understood why everyone says that wireless connections have slower ping times. Is this just a misperception, or is this fact, and if so what is the reason that wireless would ping slower?
I can tell you right now that there isn't much difference between the United States and China at a certain level. Yes, China has a huge amount of poor, they censor the media, and the government doesn't have any pretense of public input into policy decisions.
But when you make a comparison, you find that the United states has these same problems, but only to a different degree. The US has poverty and financial hardship - you can easily find statistics through a google search. The US indirectly censors the media, if you consider that the vast majority of the public only receives it's information from mainstream corportate sources that are deeply tied with members of the US government and will only present a certain view point. And the people really don't have a real say in the political process, considering that the US isn't really a true democracy - it's a pseudo-republic, one with two entrenched millionaire clubs that are highly exclusive and aristocratic.
You only have to look at the last thousand Slashdot stories to find hundreds of examples of abuse of power in the US. I'm living in China and find everything just as comfortable here, and I am actually able to access almost all the information that those in the US are.
Ideologically the US and China are different, but in reality they are not much different.
And this differs from silly putty how? Are you sure you aren't a shill? There are thousands of wrist strengthening squeezable objects out there, and you decide to advertise some silly putty knock-off?
Hmm, no sooner way to get your email deleted then starting it with this.
You might as well send an email to them saying your are a "self-confessed knit-o-holic", and that you want them to start sending out tax forms that can be embroidered.
What the hell are you talking about??? The fact that war is occuring implies that one side believes the other side is doing something outside the bounds of the law. War would never occur if both sides were being lawful. Your thought process implies that at least one side during a war is acting as terrorists, because someone always has to make that first initial attack, right? Was Pearl Harbor a terrorist act or an act of war? Was it legal and valid?? Calling ANYTHING legal and valid in War is just a bunch of bullshit. War is war - it's taking humanity to it's lowest level, and there are no rules in war. It's purely for propaganda that governments even talk about "law" during war.
Why does everyone ignore the fact that the west has massive political and military interference in the middle east which is why there is such hatred??? Yes, it's not because of genetic defect that these people hate you. The west is CONSTANTLY FUCKING with the middle east, whether it be propping up puppets, dictators and monarchies, selling arms to oppressive regimes, swindling oil revenue, supporting apartheid (YES, it is apartheid), or flat out military attack. These people have been living with bombs and poverty every day that are directly or indirectly a result of western policy and action. It happens once in a blue moon to a western country and then all of a sudden they should be exterminated? This is absurd to the extreme!

Well, more a question of definition - it depends on what is meant by genius. A true genius would also have the proper attitude.

"Best be the idiot that has learnt, than the genius who can't."
Is this some kind of zen koan? There is no such thing as a genius who can't learn.

I don't see your point. How would that change my opinion?
I in fact have met many Chinese who work for Chinese companies in the US trying to get transfered back to China.
