Ok, apparently you didn't understand my message. Let me break it down for you:
Yes, the current "laws" of physics may not allow for nanotech as it is currently envisioned...
So yes, I agree that atoms are not legos
...but the "laws" are always changing... I will use the same argument as always, because it is valid: We are doing a million things considered impossible even fifty years ago because of advances and changes in current "laws" and models.
But because something is considered impossible does not mean that it is impossible
Of course, even the new scientific knowledge and engineering capabilities are usually different than those envisioned by the futurists.
Yet, I am still skeptical. Even if we do make breakthroughs that allow for something at the nano-scale, it will probably not be what people imagine (i.e. nanobots)

I'm getting really tired of all of you talking about nanotech like it's already here. "They are too dangerous because they could get out of control"; "What about nanobots that can generate exact copies of real objects, what then about copyright law?"; blah blah blah...
Nanobots are science fiction. We are probably only slightly closer to nanobots than teleportation, and it's definitely further away than flying cars. Oh shit, hold on... I gotta cut this post short - My holo-phone is ringing. Damn, what do you guys think about the ramifications of someone being able to see how fat my ass is on the phone?
If businesses feel that they would gain from research, they can do it themselves. Look at IBM and Lucent. University research should no be based on short-term goals of funding, but instead on the researcher's interest coupled with the current direction of the science. I hope that the short-term thinking which placed the US economy and world environment in it's current state does not further infect the university and stain the ivory towers.
Not a bad step? Towards what? What do you mean, an easier step to integrate? I don't understand much about quantum computers using light. What does ternary computing have to do with quantum computers using light?
Son, why are you so angry? Back when I was in highschool, I was a libertarian/objectivist/gunidiot too, but trust me, no one thinks you are cool. I understand that getting riled up feels good, but it will not get you closer to the truth.
I've lived in LA all my life, and as the previous poster said, I've also never seen Calvin pissing on America. Yes, on Ford, and La Migra, but never on America. The people driving cars with Calvin pissin on Ford are white hicks driving Chevys, and the people driving trucks with Calvin pissing on La Migra are Mexican-American citizens. Illegal aliens don't have nice trucks to stick Calvin stickers on, fool.
So, yes, you do sound like an ignorant baby-killing seal-clubbing monster. And "I don't care anymore" makes you sound like an a panty waste apathetic bourgeois sheep still stuck in the memes you read on some stupid website.
Please, you have an education and some computer skills. Don't let your mind go to waste. Find the truth.
This may be true of inexperienced CLI users, but an experienced user will use a script to automagically rename those 50 files with sequential numbering instead of hitting F2 in windows to rename every file by hand.
You are correct in that the media is made up of humans, and prone to make mistakes. But I think you misrepresent the entire situation with this statement, in implying that human error is the most significant factor in misreported news.
If you are not already aware, virtually all major news sources are intimitely tied in with large corporations that have major interests in slanting the media. Bias is a much larger problem than error.
If you check the CNN web page, you most likely see that the anthrax stories overshadow what is happening in Afghanistan. They are taking advantage of the current local scare to distract people from more important events happening elsewhere.
I suggest that you look into independent sources of media as well. They are error prone as well, but at least have a different bias than the conglomerates (unbiased media is a myth):
Both of you, get over it. Microsoft will do what is in their own interest. They obviously wont always do evil, because zapping everyone's hard drives wont make them a profit. But if it would, they would do it.
Japanese artists Sachiko Kodama and Minako Takeno did an art piece displayed at SIGGRAPH using ferrofluids. Memepool had some links about this back in august.
Even two hours of batter life doesn't seem that bad to me. I'm not always looking at my watch or using an application on my Visor, so why should the Linux watch be on all the time? I would lift up my wrist and press the button, and it's on. It could be like a dual purpose flashlight switch, which can either be on only when it is pressed, or flipped on by sliding it.

The colloquialism ("Never blame...") is appropriate if you don't know the character of whom you apply it to. Most of us know that Microsoft has repeatedly and regularly exhibited malice as well as marketing genius, so I wouldn't attribute it to stupidity.
I'm sure Microsoft is fully aware of how users use their products. They have large teams spending many man hours analyzing every feature of the OS and run many usability tests, though the goal of the tests is not always for maximal usability, but also to see if users use the product the way they want them to.
VA Linux uses subliminal pornography in it's advertisement here on Slashdot. It's a known fact that sex sells. In graphic design, curviness is used to allude to the female body. In the following ad from VA Linux, the two mouses are layed out to look like a woman's ass lifted in the air, with the right cheek sticking out further than the left. Squint your eyes a bit and look again. It's there:
* Anonymity is a breeding ground of propaganda, coward. Show your face and I will respect your words.
* You can label my post as propaganda, but they are easily verifiable facts, even documented by major media outlets, conveniently forgotten in recent coverage.
* Ok, so the Soviets were assholes too. Your point? Please drop the implicit idea you were fed all your life that the people in power in this or any other country are "defending freedom" instead of playing power games.
* US military equipment did assist Bin Laden, whether it was directly to him, or indirectly through that Mujahedin, and our CIA was completely aware of the situation.
* So, you do agree with Albright that causing the deaths of 500,000 children is worth it because the few evil men who run Iraq wont feed them?
* Ok, I admit that my knowledge of Nicaragua is not strong
* I'm not talking about "these people who call themselves pacifists" who "have no trouble supporting people who kill to achieve their goals". I'm talking about true pacifists, not about some idiots you met on the street or saw on TV.
* Once again, the analogy is flawed. Neither side in this conflict is peaceful nor innocent, so dealing with a unprovoked murderous asshole is not at issue here. But they should be captured and put the trial, and perhaps killed. I never claimed to be a pacifist.
* And spare me your Rush propaganda. I've heard the argument that he sometimes "tells the truth" numerous times. Everyone tells the truth, some of the time. Don't label me or put me on any side. I don't have much respect for Noam Chomksy either.
Your analogy is one of the worst I have ever seen. There are more holes in it than I wish to address, but I will point out a few:
* A single person commiting an act of unprovoked violence is not comparable to a complex political situation that sometimes involves violence.
* The US is the puncher, not the receiver of the punch. Our cold war and oilinterests cause us to meddle in the affairs of almost every country in the middle east. We aided Osama Bin Laden and put the Taliban into power. They used to be called "freedom fighters" in the past. Our sanctions in Iraq have caused the deaths of over 500,000 CHILDREN. We sponsored and trained terrorists in Nicaragua that resulted in over 30,000 civilian deaths. The list goes on. Now who is the aggressor here?
* A true pacifist is willing to die before hitting back. If someone thinks violence is evil, how can you combat evil with violence?
* And why would anyone take advice and learn lessons from an asshole who punches peaceful people in the face?
Turn your radio dial away from Rush Limbaugh and start finding out the true story, instead of knee-jerking off.

As for purple potatoes, they are not genetically engineered or out of the ordinary in anyway other than lack of popularity. I've actually bought "blue" potatoes at the market that look purple to me, and are definitely purple after being cooked.
Even if they were rainbow colored, I really don't think it matters too much. We eat rainbow candy and icecream, chicken feet dim sum, oysters, bird nests made of spittle, pig's blood cakes, and all sorts of other things that our bodies probably aren't built for.
