Referential Integrity was a term I understood

Getting a degree has absolutely nothing to do with that, I'm sorry but if you have done any kind of real work with databases and don't know what referential integrity means with or without a degree then you are doing it wrong.

Getting a degree also tells prospective employers that you're a finisher. You don't just start stuff and bail when it gets scary. You don't give up on a project because parts of it are hard or unpleasant. I know some employers who don't care what degree you've got, as long as you've got one.

If you want an employer's respect, there is no quick and easy way to win it. You have to do the really hard stuff to prove that you can do the really hard stuff..

I hate that kind of thinking with a passion, getting a degree is not hard, I'm sorry if that insults anyone with a degree but getting a degree doesn't prove anything other than the fact you can study for a test and write the odd essay.

I see all these startups raising rediculous amounts of money and everytime I have to wonder what exactly is the money spent on? Does anyone know? How many developers does it take to maintain something like FaceBook? Just how expensive can their infraastructure and bandwidth be? It just boggles the mind that a site like that can raise so much in venture capital andit is even harder to see how they make enough profit to be able to provide a return on that investment.

Does advertising and/or subscription fees really make that much money for a site? I guess it is just tiny amounts of revenue but spread between LOTS of users.

Actually if you are going for IT jobs then prospective employers (well our company does at least) actually look online for that sort of thing and if we find geeky stuff like newsgroup postings or involvement in Open Source Software projects then it is a definite plus in your favor. Although it can easily go the other way as well, like if you have something like a Geocities account with one of those ugly picture backgrounds with big bold text to post your resume online then that will earn you a black mark.

I've tried most of the Plays For Sure stores (Yahoo, Napster & Rhapsody) in an attempt to get some legal music onto my Treo for PocketTunes so when I'm training on the bike I can just carry one device and if I get a call then the hybrid headset/earphones makes life easy. However I was dissappointed in all of the stores.

First I tried Napster, it was okay but their client sucked especially when syncing to my Treo as it would always hang up, then I tried Yahoo Music, the interface for their store was pathetic, unless you knew exactly what you were looking for then you were SOL and finally I tried Real Rhapsody. Real Rhapsody is the best of the bunch but their player software on the PC sucks pretty badly, like if you double click the first song in an album to play it then it will play just that song to play the album you have to press the play whole album button, likewise for a playlist.

It is also not intuitive at all to sync with my Treo as you have to go into some obscure control panel to set what playlists you want to sync and creating the playlists is a pain as well as there is no "Create new playlist from selection" feature. It sure would be nice if Palm and Apple got into bed together with one of the next Treo's or even just allowed PocketTunes to license FairPlay, that would rock!

Well if the Nintendo WiFi Connection on the DS for Super Mario Cart is any indication it looks like Nintendo does get it, it is free and couldn't be any easier to use. I often just jump online for a couple of races for a bit of quick fun and that is exactly how it should be.

The problem with a lot of the online multi-player stuff is the genre of games that have dominated like FPS and adventure games where people can either easily cheat or have no life & stay online all day long increasing their skill level well beyond everyone else and ruining everyone's fun. I think Nintendo are very wary of this and are being very careful with any of the online multi-player stuff that they implement so my money is actually on Nintendo for this particular race.

Especially as a Nintendo actually makes a profit on it's hardware so it doesn't need othe ways to get it's money back and can afford to provide things like free online multi-player where Microsoft can't.
