Yah but obviously you are missing the difference in living cost.

Socially acceptable (and considered good) living conditions are achievable with these salaries in India. Minimum wedge in "Federal" US means probably some dingy old apartment and living on free food from Mcdonalds.

For US$1 ~ INR 50, you can get 2 or 3 solid meals at an average restaurant/fast food place. In US, 1 dollar gets you a can of coke or a small 100gm back of chips. Do the math.

Well you are slightly off. I would rather say a $3 ~ 150INR gives you a good meal at middle standrand indian restaurant, a good stylish restaurant will still cost you around ~300INR (PIZZ huts, McDownelds etc) and a really good one will cost you around 700-1500 INR + equivalent for drinks. Ofcourse more options are always options are always there to take care of the poorest and the richest... but this is what a typical upper middle class is faced with. Agreed though its still a lot cheaper than US.

Windows users are running whatever came installed on their Dell/Gateway/HP machine.
You don't really get India mentality. Nobody (consumers atleast) buys dell/hp/gateway except for laptops. Most of the machines delivered at homes are hand assembled by local supplier who buys motherboards and other stuff in bulk. They have zero knowledge and just install pirated copies of windows to "test" the machine and deliver.
We at PLUG :- Pune Linux User Group (Pune is a mid size city in central india.) have very less resistance in installing linux on the PC's we find at our grasp as long as whatever software the person wanted the pc for is provided on linux. Games are the most problamatic feature of a standard windows pc however and we so far have no solution for it. Transgaming/wine are all ok but unfortunately they don't garuntee all the games on a "1500 games mania" dvd bought for under 500Rs (20USD) will run.

NO! GPL or no GPL, making software is expensive matter. If you write a code and give it away for free, you lose on your time without any gain. barring the philosophical gain of shared knowledge is more than original.

Now if you are a BSD guy you are just giving away your wallnuts for free, beacuse you have plenty and you own the tree neway. But you _do_ end up having less wallnuts. Someone might say that you can take the wallnuts for free (as without paying anything) but if you plant a tree you have to offer your wallnuts for free to others on the same conditions. This way you still lose your wallnuts but in the end when everyone has enough wallnut trees you get a huge benifit too.

Same goes with software, i can give something i have for free, or i can say that its still free but you also have to give anything you produce from it for free under same restrictions. Clear?
