Why should I have to pay for software to enable me to use the card I already paid for?
Why should you get the source for free you didn't pay for it you paid for the hardware.
As for ATI and matorx good for them but I can't condem a company for not giving there IP away. Sorry no matter how you cut it they aren't evil because they don't give the source away.
Give it up you are getting drivers for no money from the company that made the card. On top of that they are good drivers. What more do you want them to do give you the source? They need to make money if they give away the source they give there compition an edge because they can see what they are doing. So please stop being a whinny linux freak and take what you can get.
I don't think the clean look ever really goes out it just becomes less of a fad. Besides I'm sure apple will come out with a "hippie" version soon that comes in a multi colored cases and a roach clip on the back;-)
If anything they will liscence it out to another company but I'm sure they had to pay money in ther merge for the ALPHA and they aren't going to give it away for free. I mean why help you compitition by giving them free technology you paid for?
I think the fact your missing is that it takes alot more money and time to fix the problem after its been released rather than engineer it correctly the first time. I know this because my company has done cost analyse of fixing bugs. The further it is down the line the more it cost to fix.. point blank. So you theory of easy to change doesn't hold true.
I agree with you to some extent but I also feel introduction to CLI IS a must.
Its unix... its the foundation. Would you teach someone about houses without explaining that its built on a cement slab for stability and building conviences?
When ATC systems go down they route traffic around the down sectors because 1500 tracks in a small airspace is impossible to control safely without computer systems.
And as for testing... well lets just say my job is only 20-30% code and the rest is test and requirement.
Oh and if that wasn't enough if all else fail with our system there is a seperate fall back system (written by another contractor) that will step in and take over the displays.
The only nitpick thing I have is that a sub system in Standby mode quite often will actually do its own processing of the data because if one machine corrupts the data you still have one good box. Only when you first bring a redundant box to standby ready will you actually see a data synch.
You post reminded me of someone on/. a while back talking about open source ATC. I laughed at him then and I'm still laughing now:)
Just beacuse the software package is secure doesn't mean its immune to DOS attacks. Further more you still have to worry about other packages on the box and the OS itself.
Don't get me wrong DJBDNS is a good step in the right direction but its not the magic bullet.
sorry buck o you need to get out of the academic world and into the real one.
The project I work on takes 2 hours to do a world build on a 600 Mhz alpha so when you make a change to something that affect everything its a pain in the ass.
Secondly I would not think of running mission critical software on linux (I write ATC software).... sorry but truthfully would you want to fly on linux I wouldn't.
Dude all I have to say is BOSTON..... mad expensive.... just as much traffic (I93 , Pike on friday afteroon.... DOWNTOWN BOSTON)... and the people drive shittier... not to mention there is nothing more attractive than a drunk chick slurring her mass accent so bad you can't even make out the fact she paaaawked her caaaaa in haaaaavvvvad yaaaaaaaaaadddddd !!!!!
I wouldn't say its infringing on your right to free speech but rather your privacy..... I mean you can say what ever you want its just not private. The fact is your not paying for the call the company is and they can set rules on the call. Not to say I think its right or that I would be fine if my company listened to my phone calls....
Have you ever actually tried to decode a binary file without the data definition.... XML can only be a step in the right direction....
Atleast now yuou know the start and end point of fields within the file, you can see what goes where. With a binary you have to guess where the boundaries.
I think the bigger problem was pointed out in another thread... this isn't going to be the default format and anyone that knows to save it as xml knows to save it as straight text. We really aren;t gaining any interoperability.
I think its more the fact that you can't patent the idea of a regular auction so whats the difference between doing it in New Hampshire VS. cyber space.

Together is even slower and a bigger memory hog than rose ...

Ok I usually have a cranked sense of humor but I didn't find that fun ... anyone else?
I agree with you to some extent but I also feel introduction to CLI IS a must.

...
Its unix
Oh and I started with a 512K Mac
Can you please repeat that in english?
Hey ... I'll have you know I partied on my own tab thank you very much ....

So true. Redundancy is king.

I think if he found anyone's "mail" in her box he'd be pissed ...
you can still DOS the box ...

Oh so you saw that MSNBC special too ....
Some of us actually work at places that have governement secrets. Hell the rest of our clients wouldn't be happy if there secrets got out either.

You still need a place to dump checkpoints and what not .... but yeah most of it is CPU memory requirements ...

The underpinnings are rooted in BSD and I wouldn't say bsd was written with 64 bit machines in mind....
I don't know who you've been hanging out with but I've never naturally gotten herpes .....
I'm sorry but for certain things C is the best solutions ... I have trouble putting something writen in java into a mission critical role.
And yes I have alot of hair on my chest.
