A regular joe, when committing a massive screwup, isn't allowed to resign, he's FIRED.

Or even when he HASN'T screwed up - he's performed well, gone above and beyond... but some execs screw up, profits don't meet expectations, the stock needs a bounce, so across the board "layoffs" are announced for a temporary boost to the stock price, and ordinary joe who has performed well is allowed to resign. Oh no, wait, he's not. He's FIRED.

Exactly. That's something I've run into over and over... a place gets a new system, ditches its archaic system - and then proceeds to use the new system to do everything exactly the same way they used to on the old system.

I once worked for a place where, as I got more into the convoluted way things were handled, I discovered that everything - EVERYTHING, from billing, all office organization, document routing, sales reps routes and office locations, the "company car" policy... EVERYTHING... revolved around a system that was set up in 1949.

They had installed a new network of PCs but everything on the PCs were structured to replicate what they used to do on paper, even though those jobs were no longer necessary.

They had a fleet of company cars driving hundreds of miles to drop off orders to HQ and return paper proofs from HQ to satellite offices. NO FAXES.

And when I tried to convince the president that he could save tons of money, effort, work hours and frustration by letting me redesign the way they did business, he gave a grudging ok - and the whole company revolted and he backed down right away. "This is the way we've been doing this for over 50 years!!!"

That manager who pulled the hothead cop away was cool, we had chatted a little earlier, etc.

This was not a dangerous threatening mob challenging the authority of the police. It was a peaceful crowd getting along with the cops on a friendly basis, and one hot-headed ill-tempered cop abusing his authority.

I was at a political protest and happened to observe a cop give a peaceful (but somewhat annoying) person the finger. I laughed and whipped out my video camera and said to the cop semi-seriously "hey do that again, let me get that on video!"

The cop grabbed my shirt and pulled me toward him and growled in my face "you want to get arrested?!?!"

I laughed again and said "for what?"I lucky in that there were plenty of people around and also that a managing officer pulled the cop away and told him to cool off... but if I had been arrested it wouldn't have been the first time I was arrested on false premises.

Not all cops are dishonest - but it only takes one to mess up your day, and generally the otherwise honest cops will look the other way when it happens - they have to stick together.

I used to be Senior Consumer Affairs Rep for Fisher-Price. I wish I could remember all of the funny calls I got but after a while they all just blend together. There are a couple I remember, though.

FP sold a kid's outdoor tent for a while and a woman called to report that there were bees in her tent. First rule: Take everything seriously until you know for sure what's going on. It's not inconcievable that she bought a product and opened it to find bees. Strange things happen in warehouses.
So I ask "do you have any idea how they got in there?"She replied "It's in the back yard and the kid must have left it open. How do I get them out?!"
"Well, I would carefully unzip the door and open it, and maybe go to the other side of the tent and try to shake it and shoo them out, or just leave it until they leave by themselves."

"OK, I'll try that! Thanks!" she said breathlessly and sincerely.

Then there was the time a woman called to complain about a toy crescent wrench and bolt. That's all it was, a wrench and a bolt, sold as an accessory for a toy workbench. Her complaint? The wrench and bolt didn't come with instructions. I spent about 15 minutes trying to explain to her how to use a wrench on a bolt, how it fits on it. She couldn't comprehend it. She insisted that we were negligent for not including instructions.

Where I live we have the following grocery chains, not including discount places like Save-A-Lot:

    Albertson's Winn-Dixie Kash-n-Karry Publix Pick-N-Save

Of these, only one has U-Scan - Albertson's.

Guess which one has the highest prices... you guessed it - Albertson's. they also have a crappy selection and lousy customer service, their scanners consistently overcharge, and the store is not well cleaned.

Publix, on the other hand, has more employees on staff at all times, great service, a clean store, and not only do they pay their employees more, but it's employee-owned, so they get stock, etc. Better place for them to work.

Cleaner store, better, friendlier service, well-paid employees and more people on hand, and lower prices. Imagine that.
