We're making a big deal out of a tiny leak in a household pipe while the watermain is gushing water down the street.

Said insurance for nuclear power plants would be extremely cheap if we are allowed to use a failsafe reactor design that won't meltdown if active cooling is lost and spent fuel isn't left in swimming pools.

But let's say we decommission all of our nuclear power plants tomorrow. The rods need to be kept somewhere. The irradiated reactor housing needs to be put in storage. We can't magically make them disappear.

I would buy it. Seriously I'd love to prevent my family from ever driving my car. Especially my younger sister who has it for weeks and brings it back crashed up. I could always just sell the car for parts if I ever feel like getting a new car.
Car companies, please make this an option! I suggest exclusively using palm vein scanners instead of fingerprints. They are harder to steal since you don't leave them on everything you touch. I don't need remote car entry or ignition. Just put a palm vein reader on the driver's side door and the ignition.
Actually the public has the exact same power. It is just a difference of consequences when caught.
War machines that fall apart as they are made of garbage and covered in toxic paint which sickens their soldiers. I think the US has a better chance of winning. We can easily construct factories using steel and pump out all of the bombs and missiles we need to wipe out their seaports, airports, railroad infrastructure.We don't need to worry about the city highways as their citizens will clog them up for us.
The only thing we need to do is come up with a system to reliably shoot down nukes before they make radioactive craters out of our cities. The other option is to have SEAL teams ready to seize their nuclear silos and render them inoperable if they can't hold on to them.
Every competent nation has battle plans to take out every other nation on the planet, no matter how insignificant of a threat said nation is or how we are great allies. The only thing left to do is take an excuse out of the excuse box. Terrorism, massacring their own people, WMDs, seizing land from an ally, stop the spread of communism, etc.
I like to include the extraction method with the actual burning of natural gas when deciding the impact on the environment. Natural gas fracking ruins water tables and poisons our water supplies.
I would rather drink Tokyo tap water than anything from a water table that has been fracked.
Nuclear power currently is an accident waiting to happen because we're only allowed to build ancient reactor designs instead of newer designs that won't meltdown when power is lost to the water pumps.
What happened in Japan was completely avoidable and by avoidable I don't mean by burning fossil fuels instead. The most dangerous fallout from this event won't be from the reactors but from ignorant people holding us back from switching over to nuclear power completely.
The same kind of people also gutted our space program so we won't get solar collectors in outer space either.
But there are some solutions to this problem:
- Educate the public on the benefits of science.
- Move to an unclaimed island and create a scientific utopia there.
- or just drink booze until we are as dumb as everyone else so reality hurts less.
Hosting your own dedicated game server.
Hosting your own website on your computer.
Sharing family photos.
Sending a large file assignment you just finished back to your work computer or to a client.
HD video conferencing.
Remote backup of your files.
Doing two or more of the previously listed at the same time.
I'll never understand why people assume P2P is the only possible use for upload bandwidth. My younger sister came home from her Africa trip and crippled the internet connection while uploading a few memory cards worth of pictures to flickr. It'll only get worse as they come out with 3D cameras with even more mega pixels.
They wouldn't need to use antibiotics on our cattle if we just fed them grasses instead of corn feed.
Unfortunately corn feed and antibiotics is cheaper than feeding them grasses.
Two or more men engaging in consensual sex does not bother me or affect me at all. Well I guess it does bother me a little when the gay couple down the street hold loud parties but I'm pretty sure that it would still bother me if they were straight.
A man or woman molesting a child bothers me and affects me. I had to deal with my aunt during my teen years who saw every male regardless of age as a molester. I was falsely accused by her back before I hear even before I hit puberty. I was traumatized by that experience and make every effort to never be alone in a room with anyone under 18. Relations between my mother and aunt went down the drain. I dread family events because my aunt might be there. But the trauma I experienced is not even close to what my cousin went through.
So yes I think pedophiles should get treatment before they commit a crime against a family.
Homosexuals have a right to happiness.
Pedophiles don't have the right to molest children.
Politicians don't have the right to strip away our freedoms and waste our money with feel good measures that accomplish nothing.
The pedophiles will just use Tor or come up with some stenographic technique to hide their stuff. Meanwhile everyone else will suffer from burdening the costs of implementing and maintaining such a system.

Your children won't be any safer if some random pervert can't get his jollies from images anymore. Without an outlet, these pervertss will bottle it up until they can no longer hold back. Innocent children will most likely suffer due to such legislation.
Pedophiles aren't something new. They have existed in humanity for at least as long as recorded history. Putting our fingers in our ears and going lalalala will do nothing to protect our children or get pedophiles the treatment that will enable them to participate in our society.
I would like to see the creation of programs where pedophiles can go in and receive counseling without getting a life long stigma. Perhaps we could create child-less towns out in the middle of nowhere so they can live their lives without temptation. We could do more research on the brains of pedophiles and develop drugs to re-orientate pedophiles to a more healthy age range, preferably in a delivery mechanism like the Norplant birth control so the pedophile just needs to get it replaced every few years.
My cousin was molested as a child by her father's boss. He fled to France to avoid prosecution. It did significant trauma to my extended family. I want to prevent such things from happening to other families and to do that we have to work with the pedophiles so they get help and don't hide in the woodwork, being consumed by their desires yet secluded due to fears of being expelled from society.
Locking up people who have thumbnails of child porn in their browser's caches does nothing to solve the problem either and creates a new class of victims, those who went to an image board for a legal fetish that is far removed from child porn but got spammed by the Russian child porn spammers. It is a crime in some places to delete it from your cache, leaving many people in a no-win situation caused by ignorant and useless politicians.
Please think before wasting tax dollars and giving people a false sense of security. Every wasted dollar could be better spent feeding, clothing, and educating children, or perhaps fix up a nation's crumbling transportation infrastructure or installing optical fiber to every house.
Water filters aren't magical devices. They can only filter so much crap out of the water before they need to be replaced. It might not make financial sense to continue operating the plant if they have to replace the filter for every fifty gallons of water they use.
