The first thing I'll say doesn't really relate to the subject of the post, but I wanted it meantioned. I've had a hard drive for almost 3 years before I stopped using it, and that's only because I got a new one. They are plenty reliable in my experience.
But back to the subject of the post. There's an inconcistency that seems extremely obvious to me. One of the spokesmen contradicted themselves in a single sentence ("they're so reliable and cheap, you won't need a warranty anyway"). If they're so damn cheap and reliable, why not extend the warranty?
These people walk in with some idea that they never questioned... just accepted. When they have to justify it, they have no idea what to say! They don't even think about it before they open their mouth. If they can't defend it properly, then maybe they shouldn't be for it.
Think of one speaker (such as a cheap radio) as one point in space. Like a single point, the sound coming from the speaker is zero-dimensional (no length, width, or height). If there are two speakers, or two points, it is one dimensional. The only dimension is length (or whichever one you want to use). If there are at least three speakers (or points) on a single plane, there are two dimensions to the audio.
All these companies come out with surround sound systems that exist only on a single plane. Why, then, is it referred to as three dimensional? For added flare? Why else? The only way it would be three dimensional is if there was at least one speaker above or below you that actually had an effect on the audio (by effect I mean adding that 3D element). There is nothing I can't stand more than people who don't understand math. It's so flippin easy!
The reason Microsoft doesn't like people to mod thier console is simple. Getting an XBox can be like getting a pretty good computer... only a lot cheaper. Microsoft loses money on every XBox they sell, but the more people there are that own them, the more people there are to buy games. The software is what keeps the XBox going. Because XBox Linux users don't buy games, Microsoft loses money on EVERY console they (linux users) buy. If I were Gates, I wouldn't want anybody modding my XBox (unless of course the mod allowed you to easily switch between Linux and game functionality in a cinch). Understandable.
Instead of it being GNU/Linux (four syllables), it could be called GNUL? Huh? HUH? Pronounced like NULL so it would only be one syllable. On second nobody'll listen to me.
I swear I saw this guy on The ScreenSavers. Did it seriously take this long for an article to come out? I mean I'm sure that there's on one TechTV... let me see... yup. September 27, 2002. Took a while.
I know it isn't open sourced, but there is a clone of Winamp 2.x called XMMS on Linux, so if they make the transition, at least some things are familiar.
It doesn't matter whether or not advertising in the media gets people to buy things. It still works. What I mean when I say that it works is that it pays the bills. TV networks don't really care if it does or not. They just want to get paid.
Patrick showed off XPlay on TheScreenSavers. He hates Macintosh, but when XPlay came out, he could finally get the coveted iPod. He seemed to like it. It works just fine, too, so you shouldn't have any problems.
if you build it yourself. Plus if you use pricewatch.com, and do your research, you could build a really nice computer that, if preassembled, could cost you much more.

You didn't hear this from me, but I've got word that the music and movie industries will buy the Internet. No joke.

(just kidding ... you just took too long)

Make sure to include .url files to freshmeat and SourceForge so when they feel more comfortable with open source, they can go here for more.
