one thing that really hurts ruby is that it's documentation is sparse. i used to be a big ruby fan, but documentation has not kept up with its releases. whereas i think ruby is a very nice language, languages like perl, php and python have much more complete docs, and it makes the difference between 30 seconds to figure out the right function/method and digging around 15 minutes through out-of-date docs and finally going in and reading the source code.
i own the first edition, it's a good tutorial-type ruby book

OpenBSD Now Nine Years Old

the good comes from knowing that when you install OpenBSD you're starting on a level playing field. likely, any security holes your system will have will be as a direct result of a failure of due diligence either by you and/or the developers of the software
this doesn't mean your final system won't have holes, but it means you're not already starting "in the hole"; it doesn't sound like much, and yet how many other systems out there can make this claim? OpenBSD isn't the end-all, be-all, it's just a good tool for your toolbox
there's simply too much money out there, who cares about accountability? history can say whatever it wants as long as i can live the rest of my life in luxury doing whatever i please
we've increasingly seen this in corporations and government. if i can make $20 million screwing people over, and eventually get caught and thrown out on my ass (whether i be a CEO or gov't official) what do i care what they think about me?
in the past there was usually was never enough potential monetary benefit that the corrupt individual could simply dissapear for the rest of their lives.
on another issue i make this prediction: the social security issue in the US will not be solved. politics is such a short-term game, there's no incentive to save money down the road when the money could be used for something with a more dramatic short-term gain. one president might manage to make some progress and then the next president could jump right in and waste that money.

Such a decisive leader!
indeed. at first i found it amusing, but i am troubled that gwb finds it impossible to admit a specific instance in which he made a wrong decision.
his leadership style is like that of a religious organization... no matter what, never admit you are wrong (until at least a few hundred years after the incident, if ever).
part of making decisions is making the wrong ones and being able recognize them, admit it, and learn from them going forward.

as far as hierarchies are concerned you can do all that within sql, although it can get a bit tricky; but then it will be no matter how you do it.
as far as the second part of your post is concerned, those are shortcomings with mysql. most modern mature databases give you all kinds of options for extending them (ie postgresql)
So, careers involving handling sewage, manure or garbage are actually BETTER than being an IT manager?
no, i think they're all lumped in together
actually, i think this is just an attempt by the IT industry to scare away all the people doing it because computers are trendy and get down to business. at least, you can always hope.
