In the consumer devices that this is meant for, Linux isn't really a visible part. It'll just be regular people who want to play their Windows Media formatted stuff on their DVD player.
Hasn't Real done a clean room reimplementation of the Windows Media formats(atleast the big ones like wma and wmv)? Why don't they opensource their implementations?
Well I'm doing something similar, I'm moving to a college closer to home so I won't live on campus so I don't use the network. The network here at UAH has a rather large collection of music, and has a lot of all the recent movies. I'll have get as much as I can before the semester ends.
It seems every body is looking for one big thing to replaces the current selling records model of the industry. A lot of things like this and othere like online music sales will probably work to keep it profitable.
You can get PPC linuc boxes from the people who make Yellowdog linux, and there are a couple of other PPC computer makers. Also, Apple has no reason to get into the Linux market, they already hav the best desktop Unix.
Well compressing things is at least a start. Perhaps with another technique or two a coputer could be able to almost be certain whether or not something is alive.
Yeah, it's great to have one rescue disk that can handle nearly every sitiation. For a while Knoppix was the only Linux disto that would work with PCI of my computer. Luckily Mandrake 9.1 fixed that. The constant CD spining noise gets annoying but at least it's less annoying than Windows
Who says that you have to use Gnome or KDE on a Linux server, why not a light weight window manager. If you turn on a lot of the visual performance stuff in XP (like themes) it gets quite a bit more resource intensive as well.
Well it probably would be stupid to by a brand new iMac or PowerMac just to install Linux, but if you have and old Mac Mac OS X can be a burden(especially pre-G3), so Linux is a great solution. Also there is some non apple PPC hardware that people use for specialized things.
Fusion+Hydrogen, all our energy problems solved. That would be great. I hop I get to see it in my life time.

It looks like Apple is still trying to keep their edge in the area.
He talks a lot about embedded, but doesn't say a lot a bout specific examples. Where exactly is NetBSD used?
Most network file sharing would stop if they would stop blocking access to Kazaa.

No, but just as importantly it can play ogg files!

Lean Mozilla? Check the date, April Fool's day was yesterday :)

Maybe that's why this one isn't very funny.
None of that really happened, it's an April Fool's joke about April Fool's jokes.
Oh, it real. I thought that the joke was just over my head.
Netscape is still a part of AOL, although I think Sun is somewhat interested in Mozilla just a browser to complenent Star/OpenOffice.
Camino is the new name for Chimera, the Mac OS X Mozilla browser. Phoenix is still Phoenix.

Maybe I should get an LCD to replace my current CRT that makes a horrible high pitdhed sound constantly. Is that a bad sign.
So far these are just surgical strikes against the leadership, not the big bombing yet.
Which is older, NetBSD or FreeBSD.
What was NetBSD like 10 years ago and how did Linux compare at the time?
links straight from slashdot.org are disabled, but not from developer.slashdot.org
Maybe they didn't want to do software support themselves.
