Next, people complain about Linux usability? apt-get install mplayer k3b, etc? It is not harder, just different. In fact, having all of the software most people need in one place makes Linux easier for most people in many ways, specifically the way that possible-Bill rants about here.

Here's the problem from a usability standpoint: I want to install a media player. I don't know that I need to install mplayer, xine or totem. (What is a totem and WTF does it have to do with playing media? WTF is a xine anyhow?) THe 'Add/Remove Programs' in Ubuntu addresses some of this, but try installing an app that plays podcasts WITHOUT KNOWING that democracyplayer and VLC play podcasts.

The scheduler is reponsible for deciding which programs can use the processor when. So, lets says you're running Word (not likely on linux, for quickest example I could come up with), and Word is for some reason using 100% cpu. Well, depending on how the scheduler works, that is how the cpu is shared between processes, other applications might continue working ok, or might freeze up entirely whilst they wait for Word to finish.

So, the scheduler controls how well different applications work together at the same time.

how about substituting openoffice for word then ur example works for Linux, also openoffice is a hog so it fits doubly. I guess ur not a Linux user :-P

  20. Re:duh on Linux Creator Calls GPLv3 Authors 'Hypocrites' · · Score: 1

Pretty much. I don't see anything inconsistent or hypocritical about the license or its proponents. Linus will clearly keep using the GPL2, as that's the license everyone contributes to Linux under. But those who do want to inject some extra "morality" into their software license are free to do so.

The ruler is not just a king, he's a God, so disagreeing with him is immoral, but it's also illegal, and you can get your head cut off," Torvalds continued
That's moronic. If you don't like the license, don't use it. If someone else's code is licensed only under the GPL3...tough, it's not your code. Don't use it. Anyway, aside from GCC, there are plenty of BSD alternatives to most GNU projects. If many people don't like the license, they'll contribute to those instead, or fork an older GPL2 version.
Sorry Linus but I'm with RMS on this one, I like GPL v3 and I personally will use it on any software I write, also I will prefer software which is covered by it. If someone forks a linux disto under GPL 3, I'll go for the GPL 3 fork.
