    Nice Math.

That is assuming that all the office workers use Office, and for their entire work day. God forbid you do video or sound work as well...

You've never owned a business before I see. Nothing is ever that cut and dry. The point being if my employees salary is 36 Mil over 6 years, my portion of the taxes going to the state and fed are even more. That doesn't include the cost of paying for (lets say half) of the employees health care costs, vacation time, lets say the 3% cost of living increase per year, etc...

Ok now the real point, yes the cost of upgrading Office maybe relitively small per employee per day, the bottom line is as the company owner, I'd need a damn good excuse to pay $20K per year (on average) for software, when that's 2/3 of an additional employee at your rate of pay.

Does my current software do what I NEED it to do?
    Yes... I keep it.
Will upgrading it increase my profits in a tangible way? etc...

    4. The TV/Movie industry has methods to stop/track recordings from cable/satellite and their Internet transmissions. In some cases they are not using them, in others they are being developed.

Is this done by magic hand waving? Only in certain circumstances can the CABLE company track recordings. In order to track what is being watched / recorded, you need 2 way communication (Pay-per-view, On Demand, Cable Modems also need 2 way communication). In order to track what is being recorded, the device recording the show, must report back. They can configure the digital cable boxes to log channels watched, etc..., but this is a very uncommon thing. Other then the big three cable companies, not many others have the resources to deal with it either.

I haven't dealt with satellite much, but unless you have a phone cord plugged in, or give the box broadband access via other means, it's not talking back either (2 way communication).

I work in the IT Security and Auditing field. The 'bad guys' just need a little information in order to hide their outbound data. Think about how much traffic processing 40 million+ cards would be. Find the protocol they use, be it direct sql access, https, etc... Then send your data in little bits using the same protocol. You'd be amazed how many IDS / IPS are misconfigured and would miss something like that. There's also just plain old lazy / over worked admins that don't review logs until something bad happens.

If they flow a constant 30Mb in and out the average admin isn't going to notice an additional 500k/sec, probably not even an additional 1.5Mb /sec.

It's a sad to say, but security is always thought of last.

I used to work at an Cable Company ISP. Overselling is a nessessity. We offered our customers 512K Down 256K up for 29/mo. They could purchase a larger package if they wish. We calculated that on average we could support about 150-200 customers per T1 (1.5Mb). It turned out that reality was about 100 per T1. In states like MO, a T1 costs over $1200/mo where in NJ/NY The average is about $800. Start talking DS3 (at 45Mb) and the differences are even greater if the DS is available at all. One location actually had to have 22 T1 lines because that is the largest pipe available unless we opted to run fiber over 100 miles... Speed/Price in MO is very different then NJ/NY. Hell Cablevision gives residenial customers in north jersey 10Mb downstreams...central jersey where bandwidth is more expensive...3-5Mb

There is a price point per customer. The price given per month is based on average usage. It stated so in your contract. You could request figures on average usage if you wished. We also actually looked at a customer's usage if it was sustained at a high rate. 50% of the time was active users (ie... downloading/uploading/sharing...we didn't look at content), the other 50% usually was virus traffic trying to exit our network.

Now that I've got that out... Gimme my fiber to the home now!
