Not really. Again, this deals with the all-evil DRM. The active-x control required to deliver the music relies on IE. Netscape/Moz/Fireb does not support the active-x control. Even the player uses an IE window to acquire the license.
We've had the greatest success in enabling artists to sell music online.
Our system had the highest ever Billboard ranking for a digital single in Madonna's American Life. A feat we again duplicated for Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac.
If it is a successful open source project, then it will have high visibility and should consequently have ample means of distribution from many sites. That seems to be the very definition of success in open source.
You can still be profitable if you have some value added service provided with the product. You can't really have any benefits within the product itself as it is open source, but you may be able to offer support for your item.
Red Hat capitalized on something similar, as early versions of linux were difficult for newcomers to find, install, and use. RH's packaging, support, and distribution are what made it a success.
So basically, since the supply is limitless and readily available, there is little room to make money off the product itself.
Or you could: 1. Create killer open source app 2. Get tons of developer to make it great 3. Close source 4. Piss a lot of people off 5. ??? 6. Profit!
The article posted just before this one does the same.
We have one of the most successful systems that have debuted singles higher than any other digital download system (payloadz.com).
We charge the record company 10% msrp on each txn, they charge $1.49, paypal makes out big time with $.30 + 2% and the rest goes to the label and artist. Since the publishing units do not get involved, the yield is much higher for the artist. http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/warnerbro srecords/
We worked with Madonna's group personally to sell here American Life single here: http://www.madonna.com/downloadsingle
It debuted higher than any digital single on billboard. It was 3rd behind Kid Rock and someone else's in store sales. The artist's camp could not have been happier with the process and results. Though we do have it priced at $1.49, in unprotected mp3 format!
We also sell for several other artists mentioned in the article: http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/warnerbr osrecords/

Anyone who tries to use slashdot on a wireless device knows that slashdot is one of the heaviest, ill-formed sites around. The homepage weighs 120K.
ADHD is dumb and drugs like Ritalin are extremely bad.

I exhibited all of the symptoms of a child with adhd while growing up, and even got tested during college by a psychiatrist. The diagnosis, I had add and adhd and received a prescription for 10 MB quick and slow release Ritalin.
After taking the first few pills, I would say that is one of the worst drugs ever. I am abhored by parents giving small children even small dosages of this drug. I makes you speedy and you crash hard, increasing the need for the drug.
The tests they give you for this drug are ridiculous. Like "do you doodle during class?" and "Do you speed often while driving?". I was a freshman in college, of course I did!
I simply became more organized and was able to perform well in an Ivy league school. Of course, taking up coffee didn't hurt.
I can see in adults you may see a benefit, but giving them to children is insane. Plain and simple. I doubt anyone will argue with the dramatic effects of this drug.
Our crazy NY mayor Bloomberg is actually doing this already. He is taking old cruise ships and outfitting them for low-income housing.
I just hope they got rid of those silly hyper-contaigious diseases that were going around. Some 409 surface cleaner should do it. Well, a lot actually.
Unfortunately, most decomissioned ships that go up for sale are bought by metal scrap yards who recycle the materials. We'd like to think that some rich guys buys them and then goes sailing around in a battleship, but that is rarely (never?) the case.
They're both cool, until your friends see you riding one.

Biofeedback, eh?
I've seen these devices, they usually measure minute changes in the physical state of a person. Like they mention heart rate, others, facical temperature. All they simply are, is joysticks that are sensitive to other types of inputs rather than fingers and hands.
I mean it will be cool and all, but not truly thought propelled. There is a learning curve with these devices. The one I saw had a headset that you had to get good with to use it effectively, because you had to train your facial muscles to contract to control the character. Bah.
"There are many reasons why one would want this: maybe *you* just want to trade copyrighted files, but *I* want to communicate securely and efficiently with my associates."
And *you want to "communicate" with your associates using an MP3 player? Trillian anyone?
I felt the same until I read that Michael Jackson said that. Now I'm beginning to think I must be wrong.

Blame DRM and active-x.
To lose weight do one of the following:
- Eat Less
- Do more physical activity
Aren't we geeks supposed to be smart?
OMG, I've been blinded!
Check out the commercials on their home page. The part about them being apple rip-offs is not bad, but the people, please make them stop!
Rapper's Delight in particular...

Bah, I can type way faster than that. At least 40 WPM.
Kids are slow. They're probably dumb too.
After I read on /. about the WASTE project being shut down, I sent him an email stating "you should quit". An he did! Just because I said so!
I must have some sort of superpower. I Command you all to quit your jobs now!!

Why doesn't he just quit? I'm sure he got some $ when AOL acquired nullsoft, and now they are curbing a great mind.
He should go on his own again. He already founded one successful company and 3 great technologies.
p.s.- Yes, WA 3 does suck

I equate windows users to the same thing as people who have GeoCities web sites.
