((But further I have a nagging complaint. The boot process for this mobo and BIOS revision stops for the most trivial things like a disconnected (or non-existant) floppy drive.))
Well then, try unplugging the floppy on any modern system. Duh! If you don't tell the BIOS you don't have a stupid floppy or tell it not to stop on errors then it's going to do that to you all the time. Not to mention, Windows is stupid enough to give you an "A" drive even if there isn't one there if you leave it enabled in the BIOS. Don't forget to set the floppy as none, disable the controller, disable your serial and parallel ports if you don't need them too. Maximize your resources. Got it?
The better surprise is to disable 'arts' as the sound server and not have default sounds in KDE. This way things like XMMS, Xine, UT2003, and other games will work better using a different sound server. Also, my onboard sound was never a problem for me on any of my motherboards (even my Shuttle box) as long as you're not afraid to recompile your kernel. I did upgrade my sound to an Audigy card though. My only desire is that positional audio (EAX) worked in linux. Nice to know when something is coming up on you. Lastly, once you get past the n00b stage using linux, switch to a different WM like blackbox, fluxbox, sawfish, etc..
I'm one of those few people who enjoy their split keyboard. I've owned my Logitech wireless natural for at least 4 years now. It's my most heavily used keyboard and has stood the test of time quite well and the keys are actually quite responsive. Batteries last nearly 6 months. And perhaps the biggest reason I like the keyboard is I don't have tiny little dainty hands. I was always told growing up that I had fingers for playing piano so the exteneded stretch on the keys is a plus. Now, if only they made a 'smaller' natural keyboard withouth the "Num Pad". Gotta be Logitech though, or at least their key layout. Microsoft's is too clumsy in design.
Wish more people would release more linux demos. Why not gauge the linux users response while working out the bugs in the demos?! I hate rebooting to play some silly game demo. At least I have plenty of entertainment on the linux side of things.
I mod you +1 for funny. I know the feeling though. I have no desire to do the Transgaming thing because I want my stuff native. Icculus rules for that. Of course I have UT2003, but also the full RTCW, the new RTCW-ET, Serious Sam 2, Descent3, Heavy Gear2, and assorted other linux games like Chromium, Bzflag, GlTron, Frozen Bubble, and others.
Gentoo is my preferred gaming platform since you don't end up with as much crap holding the system back like default RH and MDK installs.
Specs for you geeks out there who think linux is only for 486's:
P4 2.4 @ 2.88 (watercooled)
1GB PC3500
80GB Seagate
16x Pioneer DVD (best damn DVD-ROM available)
floppy? Hell no, card reader!!
SB Audigy
Crusty old Asus GF3 (waiting for the FX5900)
BTW, my kernels compile fine on an overclocked machine too.:)
Because I got the right board:) Asus P4G8X-D will handle anything on the market now and CPU's to come. As well, the PC3500 will handle the newer 800Mhz FSB P4's quite nicely. This way it'll be at least a year before I need a major purchase.
3D Mark will only provide a few (literally) additional points with different RAM timings. Overclocking the CPU or Video card will yield better results for gaming benchmarks. Application performance AND gaming will both be improved the better timings on the RAM though. Running my RAM at 2-2-2-5 gets me less than 50 more points on 3D-Mark. Nothing to write home about.
not to mention with faster RAM that's guaranteed for faster everything then if you downclock you can bump the performance ever more. I'm using PC3500 though my CPU is only a 533 FSB (133x4) Bumping that to a 150Mhz (600 FSB) gets me an extra 300Mhz easily and my RAM is not nearly choked yet. Once I've built my water cooling kit I should be able to comfortably run the RAM at 166 (664 FSB?) effectively giving me a nifty 3Ghz CPU:) And my RAM still has room to play!!
Hey now, mod the poor guy (or gal) up for being politcally correct. LEGO is a trademark for those litte plastic bricks that fit together so well. Just like Kleenex and Rollerblades, facial tissues come from other manufacturers and inline skate are made by many. Too bad Tyco's plastic building blocks don't have the cult following LEGO does. Then again, they suck in comparison. That's all from me, a once proud LEGO brick collector:)
Heck, I'm expecting more along the lines of $40 in gas round trip. I'm heading up from Eugene, OR and willing to carpool. Leaving Eugene at 4am. Returning same day. Wanna go?
When I worked in Glacier National Park in Montana we sold "bear bells" in the gift shop. Generally speaking a bear doesn't want to have anything to do with you unless you're around in mating season, cub season, or just too close to their personal territory. So, by making noise while on the trails you were less likely to run across a bear (which is a good thing you know)
I got my GF3 before Ti cards were even out. Have long since been enjoying 3D acceleration in RedHat and now Gentoo. And I never had to reboot my computer to use the accelerated drivers. So, how is that similar to a Windows experience? Even XP requires a reboot.
Could it be that CmdrTaco has caught the bug and feels the need to repost or is that a tad bit of relevance to each post.
BTW, Micro$oft bought linux today.:)
Take into account though that even though you may have the same name as half a dozen others you may have a nickname that's not the same as theirs. Heck, why would you even want to get a domain in your real name anyway? You'll just end up with more personalized spam.
I for one know one user who striped his IDE drives on a RedHat box, very happy man he now is. Achieving over 90Mb/s throughput compared to the normal measly 40Mb/s saves him a lot of time when working. Anything important is just backed up to his server. I myself spent much time trying to use hardware RAID on an Adaptec 1200A IDE controller but finally gave up and went software. I'm mirroring for safety and not for speed because I store at least a dozen linux iso's and all my.ogg files and it would REALLY suck to have that on only drive and watch it die. As a side note, it shouldn't matter what RAID level you use because real power users have more than one box.:)
I'd rather be reimbursed in cash than have him even come near me. Really, would you enjoy him on you? Secondly, just how does one make a funny comment on this thread when the story itself contains the greatest humor?
And I'm enjoying getting my gaming box back up. I temporarily hosed Gentoo. Damn I'm good. NEVER do a CONFIG_PROTECT='-*' without backing up your/etc directory first:)
Music in my pocket? Of course. I have a couple albums in Ogg format on the CF card in my Zaurus. All I had to do was grab the plugin for the onboard media player and load it into the system, not on a removable card. It was only a few 'kb' so I'm not worried about the space it takes. I can listen to music and still type or play chess so I can drain my battery faster than the average user. And that my fellow posters is my 2 cents. Enjoy.
With a 5600 coming out soon you can get good deals on the 5500. I just picked mine up for $230!! It's a beautiful PDA/minicomputer. I can type on it nearly as fast as I can write. Makes taking notes in church and throwing them on my computer that much easier. Add $40 to that price for the 128MB CF I'll have tomorrow and you're still not looking at a bunch of money for something you should be careful not to drool on. I'll be learning all about battery life at Comdex in a couple weeks. For now though, playing a little chess and listening to music while sitting around is hard to beat.

Remember, they are Lego building blocks. Just trolling by. :)

Chris Rice got it right already. Go find the song and have a nice day.
The Canadians are coming, the Canadians are coming!! Actually isn't somebody from Userfrienly.org going to be there? I'd love a geeky autograph :)

might as well make the first porn joke. So there you go.

If Slashdot were given advance notice about the killing of the net then we'd be able to slashdot the offender and take them offline for a bit!! Eh?
That's what happens when you fold with P4's and not Durons.
