    I know that is what you ought to do, but frankly I think it looks ugly when the fonts are disproportional large compared to the widgets, and would rather use a smaller resolution than a higher font size.

    Actually the intel compiler is an excellent compiler for AMD chips, so in that area it makes no difference. Also because of the number of x86 developers, gcc is a really good compiler on i386 (within 5-10% of icc), most people just dont know the right buttons to push.

    The biggest problem for gcc is the confusing switches (I've still not seen a single benchmark use the aggresive optimization of gcc correctly) and the fact that it not really got onto the RISC movement and is basically still a CISC compiler at heart (trying to use as few registers as possible).

    Not as much as would usually happen in open source. Mostly because gcc infrastructure is horrible. Even the main developers break something new every time they patch something.

    GCC is only alive because it works, unlike.. What alternatives?

    The had a fatal flaw. The were not "low-cost", but they were is still crap. The PowerPC970 can be massproduced to a lower cost because of the deal with Apple. Plus they a real bad asses, even if a year late.

    Americans always state that it is the best country in the world to live in, and the american culture the most tolerant (dispite all the counter-evidence) How is this in anyway different from French people claiming to be more cultured?

    Arrogance is arrogance. The only difference is that you happen to think you are actually right ( People often make that mistake)

    Just within the US, almost 2.5 million people attempt suicide each year. Only about 30 000 of them actually succeed. Why do the rest fail? They fail because as much as they hate life, they're afraid of death by their own hands even more. Killing ourselves isn't natural, and so we're naturally averse to it.

    No, they fail because trying to commit suicide for most teenage girls (the ones making suicide attempt) it's just a cry for help, and there is no point in crying for help if you're going to be dead. Most likely the 30 000 dead failed their suicide attempt, and ended up dead by mistake.

    Microwave oven and televisions set doesnt kill through 120V. In fact what makes them dangerous is that they kill even then turned off and deconnected. They kill because of really powerfull capicitors, that store the electricity and releases it in deadly shots like in an electrical chair.

    It takes 210Volts to conduct electricity through human flesh (from hand to opposite hand, depends on length of path). Contrary to common belief being wet protects you. E.g. it is pratically impossible to get killed by droping a power appliance into the same bathtub as yourself, since the current will rather travel through the water. Being wet while touching a 120V lead will conduct the current, but mostly along you skin giving you a nice burn.

    Ofcourse there are pleanty of stories where special conditions changes the result, but these are not evidence of the contrary merely strange coincidences.

    But here's the thing: In Sweden it is still illigal to sell and distribute alchohol (except for the state)..

    The german laws are perhaps slightly harsh, but the germans have very big asses to protect and they are still very sore from a thorough slaping 50 years ago.

    Actually you dont. There have been made surveys of this sort and the US didnt come out on top, but nice theory though..

    No it shouldnt. It has been part of the C standard since '99.

    Visual C++ usually doesnt get anything right. Atleast gcc has a feature to support the same bugs.

    If I understand this correctly you are confusing "root" and priviledged mode. Internet Explorer, Outlook and Media Player are all running partly priviledged, and therefore they can potentially do the same or more damage than running as Administrator, but they are not running as Administrator :)

    If I were to take a guess at something having a probability of zero, I'd say it would be something like a statement that was both 100% true and 100% false.

    Hehe, going to annoy you then.

    The halting problem: Assume you have a function halt(f,d) that tells whether a function f with data d halts or not. Now call halt upon:

    fun f1() = if halt(f1) then else ;

    Assuming halt even returns it's answer cannot be true, it cannot be false, but amazingly it can be .true AND false. == logical bullshit == the empy set.

    This observation quite irritates those who claim the halting function is impossible.
