Excuse me, but GIMP is an application, Linux is a set of operating systems that use the Linux Kernel. WTF does the UI design of GIMP have to do with Linux???

For the record, I use GIMP in Windows and the UI is the same there. Should I start attacking Windows because of it?

I have a degree in Math (plus two more in Computer Science) and good teaching ability and experience. Unfortunately, salary is the exact reason why I didn't go into teaching. I just cannot do that to my family when I could make two and three times what an average teacher makes.

I think it is really disgusting how poorly our teachers are paid. The teaching profession should be similar to the legal and medical professions in required education and salary. If this had been the case I would have loved to be a teacher, and I would have been really damned good.

We have set out to create a system that is both drastically more secure and provides drastically more usable security than any mainstream system currently on the market.'

More secure? Kind of... More usable? Ummm, no... From TFA it seems that they are securing apps by running each application in a separate VM sandbox. However, that's going to destroy usability because none of the apps will be able to talk to one another. Which sounds to me like TFA is just not digging in deep enough to what is really going on. Otherwise, they are going to be creating A LOT more work than they really need to...

Also, with such a hugely fundamental change to how applications function in the OS, what current software is going to work with it?

Want linux to be a raging success in the home? Make it run windows apps. Same thing with OSX...

Personally, I run Linux everywhere. And, every time I see a windows app that I want to buy, I make it a point to email the company and say, "Boy, I sure was ready to buy your software until I realized it wouldn't run on Linux. When is the Linux version due out?"

PS, This is part of why virtualization is going to be so important in the future (even though it isn't a final solution).

  14. Graphics still make me go WOW! on Graphics Don't Matter · · Score: 3, Interesting

I played Ultima Online for about 7 years. So I was used to playing a game without killer graphics for a long time. My thoughts were the same thing as the poster, gameplay is all that matters.

Well, I recently began playing World of Warcraft because I am sick of how bad UO has gotten. After playing WoW I realize just how much I was missing! There have been times in game where I was climbing a mountain and when I got to the summit and looked out into a valley I literally vocalized, "Wooooow...". It was almost a gut reaction and afterward I thought to myself, "... that was silly...". But it really does make a difference in how much I enjoy the game. I actually enjoy the beautiful views you can find in that game. After playing WoW I am a fervent believer in the "games are art" school of thought. Some of the screen shots from that world are just astonshingly beautiful.

Just the other day I was playing and my (not technology inclined) mother happen to look at my screen and remarked, "Wow, that is really pretty, what is that website?" I explained that actually it was a virtual game world and that I was looking off a boat I was riding watching the sunset.

I believe that you can't have a successful game without well thought out game play, but the artwork is what can make it a masterpiece.

  15. Seriously... How can slashdot editors allow this? on AJAX Buzzword Reinvigorates Javascript · · Score: 1

Why is it so hard to understand? Java and Javascript are totally different. They have similar syntax and such, but Javascript has absolutely nothing to do with the Java foundation or Sun. It is merely a client side scripting language. You don't need a JVM to run it. It uses the Document Object Model of HTML pages to allow your browser to do fun things like the great stuff that google maps does. Seriously... Get it straight! (And shame on slashdot editors for not correcting the poster in the first place.)

Anyway, AJAX seems pretty cool. I wish I could devote a few months to study it because I think it is the future. Technology like AJAX is what is going to make web-based operating systems (and useful thin clients) a reality. IMHO.

I tried removing the broadcom wireless card in my ZD 7168cl laptop because I didn't want to use ndiswrapper and have to deal with additional troubles. So, I wanted to install a more linux friendly card like the Intel Pro 2200. I installed the card and the system got to the initial BIOS splash screen and then came to a screeching halt. It complained that an unapproved Mini-PCI card was installed and that I must remove it and reboot.

Naive me, I called HP to see if they had a special BIOS package to get around this.

<sarcasm>I don't know, I guess I thought HP might want to accommodate their customers' needs... Silly me. </sarcasm>

I talked to a know-nothing tech support guy for about five minutes before I realized that he was not going to be any help. So, I simply asked him to pass on a message to his superiors that a customer was very irritated by the lack of support for linux or even simple modification of one's own computer. In response, this guy tried to explain that since the system was packaged with Windoze XP Home, that it is only supposed to run XP home because HP signed a contract with Microsoft to package this system with Windoze. I patiently explained that I understood that this system was designed for Microsoft and that they came as a package and that although that was a mistake to begin with, I simply wanted HP to stop crippling my computer by blocking 3rd party devices in the BIOS. I again asked him to simply pass on that a customer is very unhappy with the 2 grand that he paid for a hardware-blocking computer. How would you feel if you bought a car and if you didn't fill it up at a Shell gas station, it wouldn't start. Oh well, hopefully by the time I buy a new computer, linux support will be more widespread. Go IBM go!

  20. Why don't people seem to understand the concept... on Lycos Pulls Vigilante Anti-spam Campaign · · Score: 1

Lycos' program isn't doing anything wrong, they are simply doing what spammers do. They are not trying to take down their servers via illegal attacks. Their goal is to increase the amount of useless traffic to a spammer's website. The point is to make their bandwidth costs overwhelm their profits and put them out of business. Hmm, wasting bandwidth for personal profit, who else is guilty of that??

I still haven't seen a clear, cogent argument for why this is not a good strategy... "We shouldn't fight fire with fire" or "We shouldn't sink to their level" are not arguments, they are feelings. Personally I am disappointed that Lycos is shutting it down...
