  1. Re:No Safari on Google Offers Personalized Search · · Score: 4, Informative

At the top of the search results, it will say "Sorry, Google Personalized does not currently support Safari." (right next to the link that says 'Edit Profile'). If you change your User Agent, the page will reload and in that spot where the error message was will be a gauge you can click on for "Min" and "Max" personalization.

It says: Tip: Drag the slider (above) to the right to personalize results. Personalized results are marked by [little google balls here]

It sort of works in Safari, but it isn't draggable, you have to click - and it misjudges where you clicked relative to the gauge. It does seem to change the results though. This is what the "personalized" searching is really doing - if you are in Safari and you can't use the gauge, all you get is slightly different results from a regular Google search. There's not much "personalized" about it. Hope that clarifies what people are seeing here...

However, were I in Opera's shoes, it would probably make more sense to emulate the behavior of Mac's bundled browsers (past and present) and set behavior to insertion rather than selection on first click.

Not only that, but it's the little things in a UI that can get on your nerves. In pretty much any OS X app, clicking in a text field will place the insertion point. Double-clicking will select the word under the mouse, and triple clicking will select the whole line. When an application (especially one you would potentially use very often throughout the day, like a browser) ignores these simple conventions that you don't even think about, it can be disconcerting. Case in point, many Java apps that look like Cocoa apps, but often don't behave like them in small (but noticeable) ways.

Why can't they have it work similarly to the (new in Panther, I believe) file dialogs in OS X? In most apps now, when you have an open dialog box open, and you start typing with a / or ~ character, a little prompt pops up allowing you to type the path. This, to me, seems a bit more pleasant than having to bother with a separate key combo when I could just start typing the path and let the dialog box figure it out.

Why can't we build games where everything you need to run the game is right on the CD?

As cool (from a geek standpoint) as this approach is, I have always seriously questioned the usefulness of it. I mean, really - how many games are out there that you a) can't get for Windows, and b) would want to bother rebooting your computer to use? Then there's the problem of how you deal with patches and updates, adding new maps, etc.

I suppose the latter could be dealt with by having a portion of your hard drive to stick maps and such in, but if you're going to bother with using the hard drive anyway, why not just install the damn game? As for updates, are you going to expect people to burn a whole new ISO and coaster the old CD-R?

I'm just rambling, really, but ultimately I fail to see the practicality of bootable game CDs. Yeah, there is the geek chic side - you could burn 20 bootable UT2K3 discs and turn a college network lab into a LAN party or something. But honestly, what effect would this sort of thing have on 99% of gamers (especially those who don't care about Linux anyway)?

No, the Zire is a PDA. What you described borders on being a notebook - if I wanted to carry a notebook computer around, I would have one. But you see, I don't need (or want) a persistant connection to the internet, or a larger screen, or a phone. A keyboard would be nice, but it's not critical. The Zire lets me organize my contacts and notes, view whatever documents I need to carry with me, play games, play video and music, and carry around my photo albums in my pocket.

And like you said, the other devices "eat up power like you wouldn't believe." Why again would I want a device that has features I don't want, in a form factor I don't want to lug around, and that is a pain in the ass requiring frequent recharges?

Because all the windows are tied to the application. The OS/window manager/whatever should be smart enough to know that yes, these 5 windows belong to The GIMP, so they should not be listed as 5 separate items in the task manager. The task manager is supposed to manage tasks, not windows!
