  1. Judges tick me off on CA Court Rules Cyber Cafe Cameras Constitutional · · Score: 2, Interesting

And not just with their actual decisions. I don't understand why Supreme Court judges can turn away or decide cases "without comment." What the hell gives them that right? Why don't they have to provide their reasonings in a public statement.
Another wonderful one are the stories I've heard of people who've written to judges expressing anger over decisions they've made, and gotten slapped with contempt of court! Doesn't that violate due process?

The Viking landers performed soil tests that were supposed to check for living organisms. Interestingly, they were inconclusive - the reactions observed to the agar solution could have either been the result of microorganisms, or unusual soil chemistry. Either Spirit and Opportunity will tell us which it is, or we'll just have to send some folks up there to check things out.

  6. Why am I not surprised? on Star Trek: Enterprise in Danger of Being Cancelled · · Score: 5, Interesting

With each new iteration, Star Trek distorts and dilutes its own mythos. I thought this would be an interesting take on Starfleet's early history, with raw, unpolished versions, or complete absence of, the day to day technologies that the TOS and later crews used and of course modified at the eleventh hour to avert a crisis. The writers wasted no time updating/uprating Enterprises' systems and accoutrements ("phase pistols" anyone?) so now the ship is nearly indistinguishable from its descendants. The exploration oriented format is too similar to the preceding shows. The TOS crew have earned a Campbell-esque place in our pantheon of modern day mythic heroes. Picard may ascend to that pinnacle. Janeway and Cisko never will. Neither will Jonathan Archer. Star Trek is in a decadent stage. A long hiatus with no series and no movies would serve everyone best, giving both the general public and hardcore fans some time to build up some real desire. Hire completlely new writers and give them years, if need be, to come up with a really fresh take. Some ideas for a next Trek: How about a show with a built-in limited lifespan, starting right at the post-Shuttle era, and ending with Archer's Enterprise? Each season would be a complete epoch, showing the development of the technology, and the adaptation of people to long-term life in space. Another idea: breakdown of the Federation. It collapses sometime after Picard's retirement, and a starship crew makes the rounds restoring order to worlds and rebuilding alliances. Once again, a series that's planned out ahead of time to run for a certain number of seasons. See, the open-ended nature of each Star Trek series is the problem. I hope the next writers come up with something great, but most importantly, KEEP FOCUSED!

  7. This is why I like Amtrack on Northwest Gives Personal Data to NASA · · Score: 2, Interesting

OK, not nearly as fast or convenient as air travel, but I don't feel the heavy hand of "homeland security" when I take Amtrack. It's such a pleasant, relaxing way of travel and although it's statistically safer, you have the distinct advantage of already being on the ground in the event of a calamity. Although I'm by no means advocating this, CCW holders can probably carry without anyone ever knowing.

There were a lot of space-related exhibits and vendor booths set up at the Pasadena Civic Center, with a promise of live telemetry from the Pathfinder craft and Sojourner rover. The images were slow in coming and not very clear. Not too many people I felt interested in talking to (although I missed a chance to chat up Robert Zubrin), so I headed out by myself in a GPS-equipped rented Taurus that always kept me on track out there. I drove past the San Gabriels which glowed eerily red from wildfires, and out to the Mojave, where hot dry winds blew hard all around me. I got out of my car and experienced the numbing silence and total darkness of the desert. I drove back a few hours later, and couldn't fathom returning to the Civic Center, so I simply alternated between visiting the desert and eating lots of Thai and Vietnamese food.

The implication seems to be that it's yet another way families are disconnecting. I agree somewhat, that "facetime" between family members is a bit lacking these days.
However, there are other reasons, non-technological that are at fault - two income, multi-job families, and an increased use of nannies/babysitters and other caregivers taking the place of parents.
I'd rather see a family that communicates all day via cell phone, email and IM, but actually has dinner together fairly often, with a good amount of in-person family interaction, than a situation in which one parent is ensconced in a loft office doing paperwork until 10:00 PM, while the other spouse is at the office for yet another late meeting, or is away on a business trip all the time.
