I can't speak for the Patent Office, but MS aren't aware of this prior art because he's simply too young. In the 60's, Gates hadn't even smoked his first crack pipe yet.
...to its slow unraveling in 2001, a foreshadowing event for the rest of the dot-com world.
Wait! You mean the rest of the dot-com world is going to unravel? I thought it was a secure place to be. I mean, it's now mid-2003 and Napster is still the only dot-com to bust, right?
I wonder how many PC users build their own - as in what percentage of desktop's are homebuilt, since these don't figure into the "retail PC sales" numbers.
In our little geek world, I'm sure the percentage of homebuilts is very high. But in the "real world," I wonder where that percentage falls to. I wonder if homebuilts account for enough to push laptop sales back under 50%, thus negating this/. story.

China has announced it intends to accelerate its Mars program, using experience and expertise from its fledgling lunar program.
They didn't mention China's use of highly reputable sources of expertise, such as Ask Slashdot!
The term "bleeding edge" meens that it's a forerunner in it's field. Picture an Axe - a wedge with a very sharp edge. When you swing it, the sharp edge goes first, slicing through whatever is in its path. It if hits your foot, there will be bleeding. Well, this "bleeding edge technology" is analagous to the edge of that wedge, the frontrunner, the first of it's type. Everything else follows in its wake - the wedge shaped path left behind by this first generation technology. Get it?
It's not really a buzz word, as it's describing anything that's cutting a path for future developments. Buzz words tend to be more focused, more directed, like "WiFi!" or "Voice Recognition" or "MegaPixels."
OK, take output wattage into consideration. There may be 41 stations. Now cut to just the the stations strong enough to pick up in my car as I travel the 60 miles or so from one end of Greater PGH to the other.
My list came from the stations that I know exist and know their call letters. How do I know they exist? I am able to tune them in when driving in my car.
I admit, CC are not the majority based on number of stations, but if you look at demographics - number of listeners - they are sure to be up there. I'm not claiming to have numbers to back it up - it's just the impression you get around here.
Anyway, my original post was a joke! Laugh! Have fun! You needn't always be so stiff.
Sure, that would be great for getting driving directions to the general vicinity of some distant galaxy, but it's BFS algorithm is sure to mix up the turns and landmarks of the last 30,000 light years or so.
If full use of SOHO cannot be regained, it will set space weather forcasting back 20 years.
You mean it will take us to a time when the forcasts aren't accurate, and they change at the last minute to relect what it's really going to do? Man, that would be terrible! Oh, wait...
When I'm not at the machine, I dig homebrewing beer, mountain biking (moslty singletrack), playing guitar, woodworking (I've even made guitars). My fiancee and I are in the market for our first house, so I'm looking forward to the remodling and stuff that goes with that.
For every one of my interests have I used the web as a source of information. Guitar tabs, bike specs & trail conditions, homebrewing tips, guitar plans, woodworking plans, etc.
recreating conditions a fraction of a second after the birth of the universe, scientists announced today.
Hmmmm. I remember learning that to have what's considered to be a truly natural birth, the parents must eat the placenta. And people actually do this. So, after this test, did the scientists eat the hot, dense matter's afterbirth? If not, then this test just ain't natural and can't be believed.
I've never followed a goatse link. What exactly are they? I don't want to follow one, either. Could someone just describe it to me?

Note to the inventors: If you get an order for one of these from Mook, please don't sell it to him.

When I read the headline, my first thought was that Sun was creating a Java version of .net. Hmmm, a knock-off of a knock-off of one's self.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, what would it be if someone imitated you imitating them? Mockery, I guess.
Way to go, Sun! Stick it to the knock-off!
