How do they admit that they have a serious problem with a device manufactured less than a year ago and then not do all that they can to back up customers who spent a small fortune on the devices? Not everyone lives in LA and can go walk in to an Apple store (even if the stores are able to fix the phone while you wait, which is not a certain thing). Being without a phone for six to eight weeks is not a viable option, and certainly not a viable option for am expensive device that may have a viable life of a year to 18 months before Apple tells the sheep it it time to line up and buy the next one.

My thoughts exactly. If there is a hosts file (and they are not bypassing it for themselves) then shame on anyone who lets M$ phone home. If the host file is gone (which kills a lot of my abusive advertisement and malware protection) or bypassed then it is time to get the router to protect you from traffic going to Microsoft.

Another nice advantage of the hosts file or router hack is that the home version will wait until you believe it is safe to download those "security updates" and you actually want them, rather than forcing them on home users first to see how much damage is done before feeding them to business users. And I say that as an experienced computer user who has only had real harm done to his system twice, once by uninstalling something that left behind an updated DLL but uninstalled the other new DLL that the first one now needed (nice design Bill) and once by a "security update) that deliberately changed my NIC EEPROM so that Linux would not run properly on it (Thank you Microsoft for such aggressive security).

No. That's the argument made over and over again, but it isn't actually the way science works.

That argument would have a lot more weight if we didn't see how Professor Peter L. Hagelstein has been treated by M.I.T. for even taking an interest in the process called "cold fusion" (also called low-energy nuclear reactions) and trying to determine where the excess heat was coming from. Clearly there are more politics and less science in the real world that you would have us believe.

Similarly for different but related technology termed "E-CAT", which has had its patent applications rejected because it seems in conflict with existing (old) understanding to nuclear technology.

Once again, politics and the status-qua and funding for big money expensive projects (although they have yet to produce any worthwhile results) take precedent over trying to learn the truth.

I don't see anything in his request about playing media...

You don't seem to have been paying attention. The one example that I saw was watching Popcorn (one of many many free movie sites that the Roku supports including Crackle). He did mention doing video, gaming and work on the PC but wasn't clear on what he wanted to use the TV for. There are some games available for Roku, even a few free ones, but I wouldn't call it a good gaming solution. I still think the best idea is buying a small computer to use as a media PC near the TV, and I'm equipped to do both; but usually I leave the media TV off and just use the Roku because of the convenience (for the things that it is suitable for).

  25. Have you looked at Roku? on Ask Slashdot: Best Wireless PC-to-TV Solution? · · Score: 1

There are some issues in what you want to do. Some free video sites go to great lengths to prevent you from watching them on a TV (such as Hulu, but not Hulu Plus). But you can watch many sites (including Popcorn) directly on the Roku. For video that you already have on the PC you can use a free DLNA player and search through your computer (or your NAS storage device) right from the Roku. Control of the PC isn't included with this, but there is a free Roku app that will let you send video from the browser to the Roku. Between DLNA and the things that Roku can do directly without the PC you get over 80% of what you seem to want.

I'm a cheap S.O.B., but I would suggest the Rouk 3 over the lesser Rokus or the streaming stick. A refurb from Newegg should do, although if you get a new Roku from the company or someone that has new inventory you'll get a newer product with voice search, a better remote, and a newer better product, even though it keeps the name Roku 3. Or wait, I think an even newer one is due out "real soon now".

Alternately, I would suggest that you consider an inexpensive computer. Newegg frequently has a refurb HP on "sale" for well under 200 with Win 7 (and eligible for free Win 10 upgrade if you want to accept that) . Connect it with a VGA cable or pop in a half height video card for HDMI support and you'll have a real computer that can go anywhere on the web and do a lot that the Roku or other TV appliances can't do.

By the way, Bluetooth isn't line of sight, but the range is limited and likely wouldn't let you use it between the TV room and the computer room.
