the stagnation will remain.... and books slightly less so, but still to a degree.
heh, right... until you go browse the romatic novels. My wife picks up 10 to 20 of them from the local library every week and I swear they are all the same book with just the character names changed.
Many of the lists I have read so far resemble more a workstation for the tech savy then a family PC.... Maybe many of us here at/. do have technically advanced family, but unfortunately, I don't. So here's a list of what I put on the family PC.
mozilla
browsing and e-mail
Winzip
Winrar
Winace
for opening archive files they download
ACDSee32
graphic viewer
ICQ
Winamp
DivX and other codecs
music match
for their ripping needs. Don't expect your regular family to use a commandline tool.
McAfee
ZoneAlarm Pro
definitely need these.
OpenOffice
MS Office
just so that they don't bug me everytime they get a file can't be opened in open office.
As sound as that is, you'd need a sharp fork and a massive and tender steak to get it to work. Are you also doing high-speed mid-air slices with a rasor sharp knife too? if not, you are probably going to need the steak to be pre-cut into little slices. Good luck trying to harpoon those.
Also by using a sharp fork, you introduce unecessary risk during meal time. You could either cut your own mouth or injure others near you....
how do your say 'Did you install the latest service packs?' in taiwanese?
You don't.
Many there don't believe in firewall or anti-virus software either. Last time I visited that place, I came across so many PC's that had never being patched it was not even funny anymore. When I tried to show the owners how they could updated their windows machines, the typical responce I got was "why? it works, and that's all I need".
There is a more intuitive (well, intuitive to me, atleast) method to preserve the old line. if you accidentally edited something you want to preserve, just ctrl-c to abort the current line and no change will be commited.
As I understand it, many Chinese writers used pseudonymous names for writing because they wanted to avoid the chance of getting proscuted.
I mean, our (well, no longer mine, I escaped) governments haven't been big on freedom of speech. I can think of many cases where writers, or even just translators, were wrongfully proscuted and had their lives shattered just because some body didn't like what they wrote, and went and found enough reasons/excuses in the text for those in power to do away with the writer.
It's called "wen zi yu ()", or jail time for words, and sadly, it has been too common through out the Chinese history.
Well, speaking as someone who went through a similar experience; yes, escaping into the alternate world does help you to not flip from the depression and pressure, but don't forget, you still live in this world, and have to come back sooner or later... and when you do, you might find out just how much a diploma would help.
I'd probably tell this friend of yours to hang in there, but try to get that peice of paper however possible. It may be a good idea to contact the local public services to see if there are any programs availible to help him out. I got through it all with the help of a B.C. student loan myself.
Does it make sense for some people to have multiple mensions while some others can't find a place to live?
Does it make sense for a small group people to hug a huge chunk of the worlds, while the others starve?
But hey, that's how the world works, for now and the foreseeable future, anyways.
Personally, I don't mind the many patches. I actually welcom them, because no useful software (this excludes "HelloWorld" and its variations) is without bugs or minor design flaws here and there.
The important thing is, however, when you do release a patch for yoru software, fscking test it!. I mean, would it kill you just to install the patch on a few test machine with various settings to see if it actually works without breaking things?
In first place, Chun-Li, has 255 votes, 3 times the 83 votes of Ryu, who's in the second place.

So, I guess in combination this is a good idea.
I am not so sure about that. Although I am not familiar with the design of modern firearms, I have a nagging feeling that electric shocks don't do too much good to the ammunition loaded in your hand gun...
I don't know why this type of thing isn't more popular with today's large distributions - it would be nice if there was a single site where you could go for install packages specific to your distribution that were guaranteed to work.
You mean, like RHN?
It's generally pretty obvious when someone isn't paying attention because of a game; most people are just to polite to remark on it.
Actually, in this one structural engineering class I took, most people are playing games on their HP calculators, and the rest are just sleeping.
I think it has something to do with the professor's awesome ability to read from his notes slowly in a consistant monotone.

because "It is quite clear that [the PS2] is intended mainly to be used to run video games."
so it my windose box. In fact, it is completely and entirely intended for running games.
taiko, or the great drum, is Japanese. Tai-Kon, which is really the root of the word taikonaut, means "space" in Chinese.
any of the following works:

Taiwan you can pay less than 2 bucks per days to hire someone
I am assuming you are using Canadian or US dallar here? 'cause $2 Taiwanese is like 8 cents.... not even enough to make a telephone call. ^^;;
Yeah, I played ROi for a month
eh... I believe that call it "iRO"...
In order to sign up to certain services / sites you need to provide a valid email address.
this tool provides a simple solution to that problem.
what better way to show off to your junior high programming class than making a DOS based Paintbrush application by hooking the mouse interrupt.
write a virus/worm/trojan to bring down the school's network?

Linux causes exothermic chemical reactions of a violent nature.
well yeah, unlike Linux, another certain OS has gone out of its way to a device of war.
ever heard of spam gourmet?
they let you set up temporary e-mail aliases that expire after a specified number of messages have been relayed.

Speaking of badly made live action movies that forever taints the image of the original series, here is another gem...
ooops, messed up my href.
