Yowsers!!!! I'm always amazed by members of the programming community who seem bitter about the design members of the web community. Maybe it's from back in the day where designers came to work in t-shirts and left early to go snowboarding... Thanks for all the defense guys. Even though I know most of the popular multimedia programing languages I'm under no illusion that I can create hard core applications. Have you ever given an explination to a non computer person and their reply is, WTF? Yeah, you know you have! And who puts it language they can understand? That's me!! Let's face it all the programers who can use the kinds of languages necessary to make an OS are the people who make the Internet, and tech industry in general, work. But when did computers become popular with the average Joe? Why yes after the GUI. We designers take techie mumbojumbo and make it understandable to mom and dad. -Design is the purposeful arangement of "things" to convey meaning or a message.

First off "Warriors of Zu Mountain" is the sequal to "Legend of Zu Mountain," not a remake. There are more examples of this since 2000. Anyone I know from Asia, with the exception of Japan, (this means HK, S Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia) constantly complain that computer animated fight scenes are ruining Hong Kong action films. Hmmmm let's see... Which ones of these Jackie Chan films was made AFTER jackie began making alot of American films, Starting with Rumble in the Bronx? Only the Rush Hours. The rest of the films on your list were made in the early 90s, well before my stated 2000 beginning of animated fights. You want some recent Jackie Chan wire films? Ok how about "Tuxedo" and the new "Medallion."

Huh what are you talking about? Go check out Hong Kong action flicks since at least 2000. They've been using 3D stand-ins for their actors to do action scenes which would be difficult if not impossible.
    • Warriors of Zu Mountain
would be a good example. Once people get over the newness of all these special effects from Asian film makers, maybe we can go back to go back to action scenes where people actually do THEIR own stunts unassisted. THen we'll never have to see Jackie Chan on wires again. *sigh*

Actually what I was saying (my appologies if I was not clear) is that a 10:1 ratio is generous as a MINIMUM ratio. That's a normal ratio for what I like to call "Hope crap happens when I'm around" documentary making. You know like go into the jungle get some leopards and natives shots. A much more reasonable rate is about 20:1 - 25:1 for a decently funded narrative. I picked 10:1 because it's easier to multiply by late at night.

  15. Re:Rumors of even *more* advanced stuff.. on First HDTV Camcorder · · Score: 5, Informative

I shoot 16mm film alot for work. I get a good Fiju color negative for about $35 per 400 foot role. 400 feet = 12 minutes. So seeing as the minimum time requirement for a feature length film is 90 minutes we can start to figure out the average cost of a small film. Let's be generous and only say they are shooting 10:1 ratio (10 takes for every one you use). That means we need to shoot 900 minutes of film. Now 900 minutes divides by 12 minutes (1 role) gives us 75 roles of folm to complete the movie. Now let's multiply the roles by $35 ot costs us per role and you end up with $2,625. This is not including developing, negative cutting or AB rolling. Let take the 900 minutes we need and let's see how much miniDV tapes will cose. I get them 3 for $10 at the local drug store. Each is 60 minutes, but at full DV I really only get 30 minutes out of them. So 900 minutes divide by 10 minutes per tape gives us 30 tapes we need to get. Now they come in packs of 3 so let's divide by 3 again and we get 10. So 10 packs x $10 = $100 I believe you can see just in the cost to shoot DV(at $100) is far cheaper than film (at $2,625)

At the moment I'm working on a 3D tank game in Director 3D and combining it with sterographic monitors (we have 2 IBMs with the monitors and stereo cameras). I haven't quite gotten it to work correctly, but man these games take on a whole new dynamic with an extra dimension! Since I'm about to graduate I've been kind of bummed I won't have the equipment to play with anymore, but now that there's a mac version I think I'll definately plunk down the cash to continue working. It may not be widely adapted yet, but in a few years some sort of real 3D with creep into most higher end games.
