I wish to God this were true. Where I work, users are given the "power user" privelege. It is possible for them to install spyware crap from the web and it happens VERY often. It is one of the most frustrating parts of my job. Of course, we could restrict them from installing just about anything by restricting their access to the Software key in the registry but the PHB doesn't think that's a good idea so I get to spend my time removing spyware and doing trainings on not installing spyware.

I would say that Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem was pretty much devoid of gameplay. Don't get me wrong, that game is in my top three favorite games (at least) but it was all about the story and atmosphere. Try to imagine playing that game with a completely different story and a bright and cheerful atmosphere. It wouldn't be that much of a game. The play mechanics are OK but not anything special. They are just good enough that they do not distract you from the awesomeness of the rest of the game.

  10. server vs. desktop distros on When Does Usability Become a Liability? · · Score: 1

I bet most people would agree that as a distro caters more toward usability as a desktop OS it can introduce security problems that are not acceptable in a server OS. For example, Lindows uses root accounts for general use. For a desktop system this enhances the usability and (maybe) isn't a major security risk. At least not as bad as a server OS doing the same thing. Of course, you would assume that a true desktop OS would not have a bunch of extraneous crap running, like telnetd, for no reason.
I think once we see more of a separation between server distros and desktop distros, the issue of usability/security will be less severe. I know that there are specialized server distros but the fact that we are talking about "Linux" exemplifies that there is not really a very distinct separation.

That is true but Microsoft already pretty much owns the desktop market. Making an Xbox emulator (aside from the difficulty of integrating DRM) makes the Xbox redundant. If they wanted people to play games on their PC's they'd just release games on the PC (i.e. Halo and KOTOR). I guess in a way it might make some sense but don't hold your breath.

The problem here is that we are talking about reality here. Your argument is often brought up by conservatives when the issue of wealth disparity comes up. The fact is that your point would be quite valid, to some degree, in the hypothetical situation that you provided. If the quality of life were raised to a high level for the poorest people in the U.S., poverty would not be much of an issue. Grnated, poverty is relative but there are definitely people who live in the U.S. right now that are destitute and that is not acceptable in a society that is so prosperous.
The main problem I have with the argument, however, is that is relies on an economy with a disparity of wealth creating a net increase in wealth for everyone. This has most definitely not been demonstrated to be true. I'm not saying it isn't possible but the trickle down theory is far from gospel truth.

'Wealthy' people by and large deserve every penny they make

No. Most rich people are just lucky. There is a very thin line between being very wealthy and being destitute. There is a great potential in our economic system for a small number of people to make a whole lot of money but it really is just a crapshoot. Sure, it takes a lot of work, in most cases, to have a chance at the big bucks but luck really is a large factor. I don't really see how a billionaire can deserve such an amazingly disproportiante amount of wealth. Does a CEO making 50 million a year really work over 3,000 times as hard as someone working for minimum wage stocking shelves at Wal-Mart?

I don't think so. Where is the "right" derived from? In a Democratic society, rights are derived from the will of the people. That means that we have the right to set tax rates how we please. It is not stealing. If you feel that the government is stealing from you, then you should remove yourself from society and stop benefiting from everything it provides you. I'm sure if you moved to a remote island in the South Pacific and started a neo-con commune, the same ingenuity and hard work that got you to the top in this meritocracy will get you really far in life.

I don't think 100 cups of coffee in 24 hours would be very dangerous if the consumption is well distributed but it is sure to be pretty unpleasant.

    1. My point with it being a civil matter is that people are settling because it is cheaper than fighting it and the issue is not being tested in the courts.

    2. The DMCA has nothing to do with what we are discussing (modding consoles) unless you take a VERY extreme interpretation of it. If Sony, Nintendo and MS thought that they could successfully invoke the DMCA against modders, they probably would have done it by now. It just does not apply.

    3. OK. Find me a single case of someone that has been prosecuted criminally for modifying a card but not stealing satellite. Also, modding a console does not involve modifying any software. You are just replacing the BIOS.

    4. The issue of ownership is more ambiguous unless you buy the card somewhere. If you get it along with your other rented satellite equipment it may be covered under the rental agreement. If you lose the reciever, you're going to have to pay for a replacement as well. That is how renting works. I won't argue over this any more, though since I don't know the details of the rental agreement so you may be right about the card ownership. Regardless, If you buy it from a flea market or something it is yours. Do what you want with it, just don't steal satellite. If DirecTV sues you and you have the cash to fight it, you will win.

Also, as I said before modding a console is NOT modifying software, so these issues really do not correlate. It would be similar of you were to chip your console and use a modified MS or Sony BIOS (which people do, I think). However if you just drop in a Free replacement BIOS, there is nothing illegal about it.
