Guess that means we'll have to start be clearing out all the criminals already in the Gov't starting from the top with W. and moving on down to the janitor in your local elementary school.
Realistically, No of this happens, or is enforced. Some people with criminal records are decent people, who made a mistake. Others, well... should be forced to watch network tv all day while picking up garbage (that's 4 u dAAn).
Get over yourselves. There are probably pleanty of criminals in the OSS scene. I suppose next you'll be saying only US citizens between the ages of 21-39 will be able to write kernel code.
Everytime shit like this comes off, it pisses me off...
Considering that the acronym DVD stands for "digital verisitle disk" [sic?], then yes, PC hardware manufacturers would have quite the case against the MPAA because the DVD format is supposed to be just that, versitle.
Undoubtably the MPAA will try something like tis in the future, but it may be a lot more subtle...
These CDs will actually crash a computer. They will not play in many CD-ROM drives. A playstation game (without some warranty-voiding manipulation of the hardware) will play the original but not a backup.
So the issue here is the ability to use hardware for it's designed purpose and not have to buy more equipment to listen to a CD you've paid for. This rant will not cover the issue of legal abckups because someone else should do it.
It's too late, their brain must be taken in for reprogramming. And their reproductive organs must be removed so they cannot unwittingly infect the gene pool before said reprogramming occurs.
Or maybe they should just be incinerated to make sure no unauthorized cloning occurs.
It really looks like the RIAA and CD-press people need to pull their heads out of their asses on this one. It's about time they realized that with the advent of the internet age, there is really no way they can prevent piracy and all they are doing with copy-protection schemes such as the most recent ones are annoying customers. It has been proven time and time again that protection schemes such as these do NOT prevent or discourage piracy and only serve to promote it. I know that I won't be buying a CD anytime soon...
Or how about a nice "To copy this CD, you must purchase a felt-tipped marker" sticker or a "Must purchase a CD-Burner which is supported by CloneCD and has a RAW read capabilty" sticker.
I just want to see the "Can also be downloaded as 128Kbit MP3s from #mp3l4m0rz on dalnet"
Finally, somone who stood back and took a long look at the realities of the software industry.
For those of you who either slept through or didn't even take an economics class, this article provides enough of a basic intro into micro/macro economic theory to not only allows the author to make some fairly advanced points, but also to allow the reader to fully understand some of the greatest misconceptions surrounding the OSS movement as well as modern computer-based industry as well.
One of the biggest points that I think the author made in his article (without saying it directly) was that OSS programmers are not business analysts. Sure, what seems very simple and straight forward, free software, sonds like a good idea, but I'm glad the author pointed out that while the software my be 'free' there are many costly issues and circumstances that surround such software, such as re-training (sorry kiddies, most business-people have no desire or will to RTFM, so the reality that is created is costly training seminars), support (since it's open source, other than usenet and a few other forums, there is no free support availible, which means someone has to foot the bill to get one of you LUNIX D0oDz out of your mama's basement and into the server closet), hardware costs (yeah, linux and other OSS support SOME hardware, sometimes even cheap hardware, but not ALL hardware), and of course incompatibilities with exdisiting systems.
With all this build up, even the cost of the systems analysis for a change to OSS becomes prohibitive.
To expand on the author's analogy of chicken to beef (chicken being OSS and beef being something proprietary); sure, the chicken might be free, but in this situation, you have to butcher the chicken yourself and hire a chef to prepare it for you, whereas you can simply walk up to a the counter and order a hamburger.
It's what it keep saying over and over again: No one wants to have to re-invent the wheel to get the job done, and as per my own experience, using Linux in a non-technical environment is like trying to invent the shelby cobra when all you have to work with is a dull bronze chisel and a little water.
On top of that, VB isn't so bad. It's the programmers that are idiots. No one in their right mind would write anything but the interface in VB. That's what dlls are for.
Java was meant for a 64-bit environment and runs about as fast as a dead snail on a 32-bit system.
Microsoft is going to buy tyhe government, outlawing your precious OSS movement.
They're also going to watch everything you do on the internet, and use the information to keep you from getting jobs at Mcdonalds (the only job you'll be able to get after years of open-source development).
Get over yourselves, there's more important things going on in the world than your worthless LUNIX.
I hearby declare this to be a worthless FUD thread. All those that agree are 1337. All opposed are worthless geeks whom no one cares about, not even their own mothers.
if they didn't sell turntables, i'd have no ravers to beat up on the weekends, and i've have to settle for beating up linux geeks.
See, with vinyl, everybody wins.
Does this mean they might stop selling cassette players too?
What about floppy drives?
It always pisses me off when I can't find a good betamax player...

seems the mods agree with you.
Better buy more ky, they must be getting raw by now.
go back to playing with nmap and you 2" penis.
If the RIAA spent as much money on a Copy-Protection technology as they do lawsuits, we'd all be screwed.

Better yet, don't buy the CD at all.
Not quite...

I'm lazy.
No, Napster may have taken a blow, but it isn't dead yet, check out their homepage for now...

ALERT!!
Now included with the purchase of any CD, a tube of KY. It'll make it less painless when the RIAA rapes you.

You are just paranoid.

Java was meant for a 64-bit environment and runs about as fast as a dead snail on a 32-bit system.
It was a joke, because java has never run very well under windows.
Now you can run java on XP.
Too bad you can't run VB on solaris...
It's a more interesting idea than the 'Hambo' based virtual mall a guy I know is working on.
Maybe with the right 3D engine, it could become the next everquest...
On second thought... Better leave it text based...
OH NO, THE SECRET IS OUT!!
Now slashdot is going to have to find stories that are about something RELEVANT to reality.
Did I mention that I don't care?
Maybe I should have, because for some reason you think I care.
TROLING is FUN!
Ok, all your fears are coming true!
