I would doubt that very many people of the general public would care much less take the time to *read* and understand a scientific paper. Such is the tragic nature of our world. People love hype and hate substance!

  7. Re:ms relies on office formats on Is the New Microsoft Office Really Open? · · Score: 1

I use OO and it works 95%+ of the time but I have run into office XP documents with tables and figures which dont convert quite right.(weird fills, tables overlapping, unreadable text in tables, captions in odd places) Ive also had some problems with excel formulas. Office 2K docs always seem to work though. Someday you too will find the Office document that doesnt look quite right in OO.

  8. ms relies on office formats on Is the New Microsoft Office Really Open? · · Score: 1

Will this be anything like Ms's wonderful HTML? with so much bloat you can barely even see the content? maybe encrypted XML? One of MS biggest advantages is Office, not just because it is a decent program, but because "everyone" has to use it since "everyone" else sends stuff in .doc format and there isnt really a good way to open them (Openoffice, etc. usually cant handle complex formatting). I really doubt MS would make their formats more open and readable by competion's products

I've recently started my own, informal, survey based on amazon.com's top sales and "movers and shakers" lists. Of course the data is skewed towards certain groups of people, bu among those groups there should be some interesting trends, like how the purchases are affected by the entertainment industry, holidays, new market releases, major price drops, etc. Maybe /. will let me post my results in a few months.

  12. Bad adaptation on Review: Solaris · · Score: 5, Insightful

Its sad they ruined this by turning into a love story. The movie cast away Lem's real intents. The book (as are most of Lem's) is about the lack of communication, the mystery of the mind and loss. I dont think hollywood audiences have the attention span to see all that Lem encompasses, which might make them think a bit too much, but surely they can stomach a little more than this! I would highly recommend the book.

No real geek would actually have any addresses to store. I have a Sony clie and I love it! Todo, memos, calender and addresses are all nice, but even better are AstroInfo for those times I'm outside at night, Acrobat and iSilo to read ebooks, Avantgo to read news when I'm bored and away from my computer, and documents to go to edit Word or Powerpoint. I can even give a slideshow from my PDA. As a nice bonus, I can listen to mp3s on the clie (though I prefer my Mp3 player). Just need to get some map software so I dont get lost. It has built in battery with a power adaptor that plugs into the PDA or the cradle. I boot up my computer, hit the hotsync button and painlessly sync my data, get news from the internet, and charge it.

  17. RedHat policy on Red Hat Nullifies Differences Between Bash, Csh · · Score: 0

I think RH is limiting choice now. First the GUI, now the shell, how far will they take this? Is this good for Linux? Probably. It may give a uniform UI so some new Linux user can show his other new Linux user friend how to do something, and knows it will work the same way. Just as long as the ability is there (and obviously there) for more advanced users to customize it. I had a little trouble changing my Gnome window manager to sawfish in Limbo which I did not like!
