  1. DLP = Projection, LCD/Plasma = Not Projection on Are Plasma TVs the Next BetaMax? · · Score: 1

It is important to note that DLP is much different than Plamsa and LCD (excluding LCD projectors, which the article says "relied on bulky image-projecting equipment behind their screens") in that all DLP TVs are projection TVs. With that limitation, I imagine they will always be thicker than LCD and Plasma TVs, but probably cheaper as well.

  2. Bipolar not CMOS on Super-fast Transistors On the Way · · Score: 1

The transistors fabricated in the article are bipolar, not CMOS. Bipolar transistors don't have gates, they have a bases.

Anyway, back to CMOS. Assuming equal voltage (which isn't true as voltages are decreasing with smaller processes), if the gate can be modeled as a capacitor, the power consumed would be larger for a higher frequency since voltage would be the same, but current would increase due to the lower impedance of a capacitor at a higher frequency. You can think of it as having to pull of the same amount of charge, but at a faster rate, thereby requiring more current. I believe the decreased power typically comes from the fact that the faster transistors are usually created with a smaller process and therefore use a lower voltage.

  3. Vacation Area on Can a Gaming Cafe be Successful? · · Score: 1

The parent is asking what I was thinking, though I think most people are looking for more of a game then a Pentium I over dialup can provide. What are you going to offer that most people don't have, seeing as most have fairly fast computers with broad band connections? I have seem gaming cafes that have been open for a couple years at vacation areas. Kids want to play at these locations, but parents are not willing to invest in high speed internet at a vacation house. Maybe even offer the kids a "plug" for their laptops, as most places I have seen require using the "business" computers.

Many otherwise intelligent people end up not reaching their full potential in society due to their horrible social intelligence.

  6. Baseband Generation and Analog Mixing on Frozen Chip from IBM hits 500 GHz · · Score: 1

Well, the bandwidth of the digital transmission isn't 2.4 GHz therefore one wouldn't need a 2.4 GHz DSP to generate the signal. Knowing little to nothing about the inner workings of cell phones, I would imagine the cell phones produce a digitally modulated signal at baseband and then using analog mixing and filtering to shift the baseband signal to RF.

  7. Re:Article was in EE Times! on Frozen Chip from IBM hits 500 GHz · · Score: 1

Why would an EE know that the signal processing unit is operated at the same frequency as the RF? I have never done anything with cell phones, therefore had no idea that the signal processor operated at the same frequency as the RF. I see no reason the signal processing unit would have to run at the same frequency as the RF or is it for simplicity in that only one LO has to be generated?

Neither is changing their mind, and if you want to look at what each side is going to say just look back in every other thread relating to a science article. It gets old seeing the same arguments rehashed every day. As Ben Franklin said, "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." I'm not saying people shouldn't discuss one side or the other, but it is obvious when a comment is made not for constructive discussion but for provocation (as the parent was).

So it seems as though VLCs codecs are not as efficient as others. The details are 720P/60FPS video on a Athlon64 3200, 512 MB RAM (Single Channel), with an AGP-8x PNY GeForce6600 (256 MB). I may not have had something configured right on VLC, but I fumbled around for hours trying to get it working.

  22. Economics? on Both Parties Ignore the Facts · · Score: 1

It is just as dishonest to say that the difference in stats between the Northeast and the South is due to the availability of guns. It also may be interesting to know that the median income in the South is approximately $40,000 where in the North it is $47,000. When people have more they have less need to steal. Anyhow, I'm sure income doesn't tell the whole story either, there are many variables in what causes more crime in some areas over others. I believe there are compelling arguments on both sides of the gun control issue, and because of this I think people should err on the side of more freedom.

Considering the math proficiencey demonstrated so far, I'd give him a "close is good enough" checkmark on this question, to avoid the embarassing, and apparently inevitable, goose egg on his math final.

If 0.841 yen = 1 cent, that means 1 yen = 1/0.841 cent or ~1.19 cent. If you are going to criticize math, make sure you get your own right :)
