    That may be, but they are addressing one of the major issues for human persistence. Good "harnessing" of energy (e=mc^2) is big, but if you are stuck on earth then you better protect it. It comforts me to know that they are not screwing around in that regard.

    IBM PPC stuff (G5's) with ATI video. I read (macosrumors.com) they were expecting very good (fast) emulation in the next version (VPC) that makes use of G5 vector goodies...

    Isn't that what people think he's using (PPC and ATI) for the XBOX 2?

    Without revealing any names, I will say that I am the son of the guy who was the project manager for Phenix. Phenix is one of the two big detectors at RHIC. I hear about the research going there on an almost daily basis.

    I must say that the nature of ~ 80% of the posts here is completely misinformed crap! What I mean to say is that I am truly scared when I read the comments and know that Slashdot is supposed to be a haven for nerds and geeks. There are so many bogus things said in comments moderated above 1 that I can't address them all.

    Good luck to you all...

    P.S. Is it time for the real geeks and nerds here to abandon ship?

    When hydrogen is absorbed into metal hydrides (a kind of storage medium/system that has been developed over the past decade or so) it becomes much less dangerous to handle and use relative to when it is in its free state.

    Yeah... my stuff isn't that good compared to Blade Runner, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Maya 4.0 (Video, Audio, Programming productions) but I don't see how that hurts my argument.

    Who's the moron here... I have in my house a DV camera, MOTU audio recording gear, and about 3 or 4 IDEs for programming. I produce all these things (music, video, software) myself with very little effort when compaired with someone living in a less advanced civilization. Only a fifty years ago the equipment required to do these things cost milliions of dollars, took up entire (large) rooms and required highly trained specialists to operate the equipment.

    Next time don't post anonymously you coward.

    If all resources are easily produced and distributed, I suspect capitalism and supply vs. demand goes out the window. Maybe we're getting a slight taste of an advanced civilization with this internet thing. i.e. Information (read: music filez) is so easily produced and distributed that there is a movement away from a capitalistic system/model within the given context. Whatever happens the gov., by definition, will be in the way. I believe its time to make a choice... Free information or no free information. And NO I'm not interested in reading your diary.

I motion for the creation of a list of criteria with which we can define orcs or goblins and the like here on Slashdot. We should append these critieria to the most complete and accurate troll definition.

    I know this is a tad of-topic but... Some astronauts say, and other psycologists theorize, that the human mind struggles to deal with the physical/psycological separation from earth. Keep in mind, so far all of our missions into space have left the earth in relatively clear view (at least for most of the mission). I think that most human minds are not yet capable of acctually leaving earth (completely) for extended periods of time. I think that our personalities (mental health/well being) need to progress before we can watch our earth shrink in the "rear view mirror". All I'm saying is we are not ready leave in more ways than simply a lack of places to go and modes of transportation.

    BTW the person that made that earlier post about "The Scriptural Proof of Extraterrestrial Life" has got to be insane. That post was way too long to be a joke and way to crazy to be sane.

    I am the poster of this story. The friends and family I am speaking of work for BNL (one of the bigger labs). Their positions are in High Energy, Solid State, and Theoretical Physics.

    If you don't see the value in general research (or commented that we should spend more money on bombs or CowboyNeal merchandise... You should have paid more attention in school pal.

    The powers that be are not going to really be able to sell enough of these new copyright protected computer systems to make a difference (the 'puters are hackable anyway). No one wants to buy all this new nextgen sh-t. If we get linux distros just a little more dumbed down (for Joe Sixpack) then we're pretty much good to go as far as keeping all the existing hardware out there running effiiciently with contemporary software and protocols.
