  1. Why not Java? on Novell Vice Chairman on Ximian, SCO · · Score: 1

.NET languages do have some advantages over Java, but just trivial things that can be implemented on top of Java VM, with a modified compiler and some JNI code. Classes with attributes for example, can be compiled as JavaBeans. There are not so many existing .NET apps and they can probably run under Wine.

So the question is, why not focus on Java?

In the same fashion, IBM doesn't get involved in any disputes between IBM and other companies, especially its competitors. Capitalism at work, good or bad.

I hope the study is flawed, because its too depressing to consider the alternative. Btw, why no MacOS in the test? Then we would see how KDE measures up to an OS with good UI.

It's a valid point, but not in this content. Don't think for a minute that a wimpy UI is going to bring down a 4-CPU, 64 bit machine. It's not an issue at all on my dual 1GHz desktop. In fact, I have never seen a truly responsible UI under Linux or Windows. For X11, there is always a little lag and visible drawing when you drag a window. And XP has to thrash a little when you open a large application, no matter how much memory you have. For Aqua, you get impression of instant response.

Since the article is about business workstations/servers rather than your hobby desktop, MacOSX on those 4-CPU machines would be a good idea indeed.

On the other hand, I have no idea what Apple is doing with Panther. Half of the windows are metal but the worst thing is that new Aqua looks kind of like metal. Perhaps a good theme manager is needed to stop this kind of abuse.

If not, the author can only sue MPAA because they misled private users.

You will think I put copyright authors in an impossible situation. But in fact, they just have to switch stategy by focusing on people who distibute their work without permission.

It's totally impossible to hide an 8-byte id number in a 1G file in a way that is hard to get rid of. This whole steganography bullshit is so overrated.

On the other hand, if they send me DVDs, there is no way for me to make a copy. Certainly not a full-resolution, full-feature 2 DVD-R copy watchable on a regular TV. Especially not using this program. I swear I never gave any copies of my LTR DVDs to my co-workers.

I just feel it's too cynical that children get beaten up by bullies and see sick, urine-smelling homeless people on the steet and there is no public outcry about that.
