It wouldn't be anything on the radio as far as I am concerned. 6 years ago, I did a stupid thing and got those 12 "free" CDs from Columbia house (I should have checked those shipping charges!). That covered everything I liked on the soft rock radio and only several additional songs didn't suck.
Six years later, this collection still covers 90% of what I like on the radio. I bought maybe 1 CD per year to cover the new stuff and except for re-releases of Beatles, classical music and (maybe) Jewel, they sucked badly. I also bought a net album of the Front Porch Country Band on mp3.com after listening to low bitrate version of every song and it was much better than the CDs.
I don't know dude. Since you don't have money to pay Clear Channel to play your music, how am I supposed to know what to buy? You should put some of your stuff on gnutella or mp3.com for us to sample. I'll cut you a deal. Come out, the anonymous coward that you are, and give us a link with a full version of a couple of your songs and 32Khz of the rest of your CD (so that I know you are not filling it with crap). If I like it, I swear on my family honor I will give you $15 for the CD or $2 for each song I choose if you let me download 160Khz MP3s and cut RIAA arses out of the picture.
I know I am probably not talking to a real musician who would be happy people are listening to the music even while complaining about lost profits. But my offer still stands for any and all genuine artists reading slashdot. Just remember I have to LIKE your music first and don't bother with "ALTERNATIVE" "ME TOO" rock.
here. It's the other Phillips streaming stereo. Even has a bigger speakers and an obscure, non-XML protocol rooted in universal plug and play. I wrote a Java program to make it play m3u playlists, including ones with stream URLs. Tried to post a story on my hack before but evil slashdot rejected it.
I expect some integrity from the authors of my financial software. If it does dangerous operations without my permission, how do I know it doesn't send my e-mail address, with my income level and home ownership status, to Intuit for inclusion in a spammer's dream list? Or worse, charges back a few bucks from my electronic refund.
Anyone knows if TaxCut makers are known for some dishonest practices. They bought CompuServe and tried to push it to people who came to H&R block. Hmmm...
Better yet, why not design a future keyboard with a small, backlighted LCD on top of each key? Than each OS or program can customize key labels. So when you change the input language, labels change. And in Quake the numeric keys will really show different weapons.
Also imagine the pure joy of virus writers when they realize just what they can do with the victim's keyboard.
McDonald doesn't compile databases of obese people, come to their homes uninvited and offer them double cheeseburgers with bacon. If they did, they would be in trouble, just like credit card companies that selectively market to people who tend to get in debt should be.
I think McDonald should have "over 300 pounds" rule to be a good community member. But offering something to any people who come to your place is very different from specifically targetting ones who are likely to buy your stuff to their detriment.
1. Whatever they get paid is more than what I make for answering their call. Why should I provide a better service (quality of the call) for less price?
2. Considering likely adult content in the replies, aren't their any rules about hiring minors? I wouldn't want to catch my hypothetical 14-year-old doing this kind of unnatural things with the phone, product being marketed and parts of his or her body.
3. Those 14-year-olds are trying to save up for a car by doing an unethical job - pushing something to people who most probably don't need the product or service. And sometimes even victimizing the callees - like offering credit cards to people already in debt. Wouldn't want one of them to make it big and do the same thing to company's shareholders. I think a good tongue lashing and guidence towards straight and narrow is very much in order. See, you might have stayed on the job longer than a few weeks if you didn't get "nice" replies to your calls.
4. What "10000 callers"? I don't think any of them really called that guy. Didn't you mean to say "10000 victims"?
Actually, I don't care that much about junk calls. I just hang up as soon as they start blabering and they seem to get the message. I am only getting a couple per month now. It's for email that I want to originators to take a Hormel product backwards through their digestive systems.
I am pretty sure I can get your number from the phone book and just call you to chat. You might get annoyed, but I don't think you can sue me for not consulting "don't call" list. Otherwise someone (besides companies with 1-digit typos of 1-800-CALL-ATT) would make tons of money on people dialing wrong numbers.
If desktops are any indication: every Intel box I ever used - brand name or home made, Windows or Linux - locked up on me at least once in several days. Panics, blue screens, unexplained resets, hard lockups with lingering sound and garbage on screen, sounds stops working, HD stops working, CD stops woring - I have seen it all. Open a media player and press Alt-Enter as fast as you can during video playback - you are guaranteed to bring any PC down in less than a minute.
After I got a G4 though, I pretty much don't think of a reboot as a part of working on a desktop. If I live it alone for a while, it goes to sleep. When I touch a key, it wakes up instantly. No lockups. Even most software updates install without a reboot.
Is there a fundamental flaw with Intel hardware that causes such an erratic behaviour? In any case, it would suck for a server!
Well, I have a big problem with the society where math, history, music or anything else you learn in school is a requirement for a meaningful life or job. If someone can work perfectly well in McDonald, the focus shouldn't be to force them into a university. As you said, capable ones will give themselves a leg up anyway. Rather, we should trying to raise the living quality of people who just have common jobs. For starters they shouldn't worry about a (safe) place to stay, heating or A/C, healthy food or a visit to the dentist. They should also be able to save money for several years and go (gasp) on a weeklong trip to Hawaii.
Perhaps this is not possible yet in today's society with it's limited resources. But nobody spends the same effort as putting a man on the moon either. Heck, if my Internet tax is going to be used to that end...
You get a supported version of Linux, without mod chips and with keyboard, mouse and ethernet card. Use OpenGL for your visualizations and hardware MPEG2 support for your DVD player.
Microsoft doesn't want any small or hobby developers for XBox, otherwise they would release a free development kit and a way to run the binaries on devices without MS signature. They do have free VC++ for CE.NET devices. I say we comply by not buying any XBoxes and games, instead of doing all the work for Bill Gates.
And by the way, my PalmOS-based handheld does play MP3s and video clips. With a G4, PS2 and a CLIE I am proud to have a Microsoft-free (TM) home.
Will not bother to register in local lists. A poor user will have to add him/her self to the list of every state or country that has the law. S/he will have to trace the spammer to the particular location to sue them. And any states/countries that do not have a law will be spammer heavens.
Is there any established network that only forwards encrypted, signed mail, with sender identity verified by the ISP? I want to switch and encourage my friends to participate.
I bet if NASA had reason to believe that Columbia had a problem, they would attempt a rescue and probably succeed. They could send an unmanned Progress to dock with Columbia and bring more supplies and maybe even extra fuel to boost the orbit to the level of ISS. Or a Souz to evacuate the crew. They could recruit more people to inspect Atlantis 24/7 and get it ready sooner. They would attempt risky, untried things like throwing a rope between two shuttles, or shuttle and ISS and having people climb over.
But of course the point is moot if they didn't know about the risk on re-entry. Or at least that the risk is much bigger than the one present on every space mission. I think shuttles are still amazingly safe for what they do. You have a bigger chance to get killed doing extreme sports that are way more conservative than trying to descend from orbit on a glider.
.NET uses it's own C runtime (msvcrt70.dll) and MFC DLLs. Worse, VC6.0-compiled libraries are not compatible with new runtime. Even DLLs that use their own runtime/MFC will not work, because MFC data structures have changed and malloc'ed memory blocks returned by the DLL can not be freed by the application, since there are two different version of heap management code. If you use any third-party component in your program (condmgr.dll anyone?), welcome to hell.
For all this trouble, you get a compiler that isn't much improved. It still tells you to call Microsoft customer support at the first non-trivial use of C++. It still doesn't like non-inline template specialization.
1. Use carbon nanotubes 2. ??? 3. Make a space elevator!!!
I don't know, sounds like a.com plan to me. Since you are so well informed, perhaps you should explain to us how scientists propose to deal with wind, water, salt resedue, dust and so on. I don't *think* I will do something to make it happen. Unless you are brave enough to use my programs to get to orbit. But I would love to hear about your personal contribution to this project.
Imagine a typhon blowing on your meter wide, paper thin space elevator. Remember how difficult it is to hold on to your umbrella in a strong wind. How are the carbon nanotubes going to hold up? Or what if the rain coats the whole structure with heavy droplets?
I think this is more like da Vinci's flying machine than a steam engine.
I am currently listening to a russian radio stations and I promise you that the clear channel doesn't reach that far yet. There are still real people making jokes and introducing songs. There are still some english-speaking countries. Is there Clear Channel in Canada, UK, Australia and Singapore?
Since your e-mail client marks spam in different color. Mine does too, and flags all the corporate broadcasts as spam. And I actually agree most of the time.
Anyway, if you filter spam by hand you get false positives as well. Spent any time clicking delete checkboxes in yahoo mail. How difficult is it to click one extra title as mistake? Once your filter has a better rate than you, you are better off letting it do the job even if it deletes some of your normal e-mail.
A shame not to use the MP3 hardware

Kind of stupid to use a software mp3 player when somewhere there is a chip that plays an mp3 directly. Must get a horrible battery life with MAD. Still, there are interesting uses for 10G drive and firewire port.
iRIP - connect directly to a firewire CD drive and siphon off the tracks
iBurn - well
iSwap - connect to another iPOD and synchronize music collections.
If that kind of argument had been the rule of thumb for deciding legality in America from day one, we would still have segregated schools, or even slavery, or, hell, we'd be the United Colonial States of the Commonwealth.
Excuse me, but all of these things were changed with the agreement of the majority. Majority of white, male and rich at that. Otherwise, people would just elect their favourite extremists for the next term and they would undo all the reforms. They elected Bush after all.
Democracy sucks but it's still the best thing out there. One thing I would love to see is an entrance exam to hold a public office, to prove that one has basic knowledge of medicine, technology, ecology and so on. Big universities can be selected at random to give tests to candidates and then their prestige will hang on his/her display of knowledge or ignorance in office.
Well, those were exceptional people who were training for this one flight longer than most of us had a job. And also we watched and read about them for quite a while, so it's more personal than a note in newspaper about a small airplane. Think of it as a small Titanic.
While other hobbits, humans and assorted spieces are finally getting some action in two towers, Frodo is still mostly just walking around and complaining about the ring. Don't you think it's time for him to lighten up and say something like bring your pussy face to my ass?
Anyway, most people can still watch without caption. Where to get the DVD?
All I was waiting for is to get a nice reference code for your DRM, so that I can use it in my own software for making backup copies of my movies that my friends can store for safekeeping.

I am running XP on my Mac to some DOS/Win games. You should check out Virtual PC. However, ` is pretty useful in MacOSX, at least if you use Terminal.
