I'm ready to go "all-in" with a bet that says the second Google releases the source to VP8, every company with patents on video compression will begin examining VP8 source code for patents. They have their legal teams and engineers ramped up to start digging ASAP and I do believe that's what Steve Jobs means.
How 'bout a fucking 100+ MPG on a car costing $106,000? With the number of people that can actually afford that car, nevertheless use a sporty roadster as their main car, saves about as much fuel as a few rap stars giving up their Hummers every other weekend.
Great way to get publicity by making a super-expensive supercar, but until Tesla can produce a car for the masses (~25K) its not going to be able to make a dent in emissions or auto sales. Green niche car.
The fuel economy is slightly less due to a more aggressive final drive ratio. OK, 1mpg isn't that much different.
The option is also around $1,000 to move up to the DI version, but all the dealers have them loaded with the super luxury packages adding another $8,000 to the cost. Looks Like I'll have to order one.
In other news, the RIAA is pushing OB/GYNs to disable the hearing component of newborn babies brain's at birth. A special chip will be implanted and used to re-enable hearing at a cost of $99. As an easter egg, this chip will automatically deduct $0.99 from the parent's bank account anytime the baby has a tune stuck in their head.
It's one thing to have a higher quality image to downsample to, but... seriously. Isn't there SOMETHING the bandwidth could be used for besides information we can't use?
It gives extra information for subliminal messaging.
Reading over the comments, I was cheerfully reminded of a short story I read in High school called "Bartleby the Scrivener."
What the Wikipedia summary does not describe is that the original two scriveners have work problems. I can't remember which way exactly, but one scrivener couldn't do any work before eating and the other one got sloshed at lunch so they essentially traded productivity in the morning and afternoon. Now Barleby did no work at all. It's those kinds of people you have to watch out for.
Unfortunately, early puberties can also lead to stunted growth
I was a bit of a late bloomer myself and I do remember students in lower grades reaching puberty before me which was quite embarassing and frustrating, especially on the sports field. The most notable difference is the amount of strength that one gains having been through puberty - I played varsity Lacrosse during my high school days and paying with sexually mature kids was like going up against a bulldozer. Having now graduated from college and attending reunions, it's clear that the males who went through puberty early and were the stars on the field are now small little runts. The few of us that bloomed late are much taller and stronger now.
There are other parasites that infect grasshoppers and snails in a fashion more similar to the Goa'uld.

Obesity Contagious?
·
· Score: 2, Informative
The amount of energy needed to pack on pounds is relatively little on a day to day basis, even less than a hundred calories over our needs per day will eventually cause obesity. There are other endocrine disorders, amongst them Cushing's Syndrome where reduction of caloric intake and excersize may have little impact on weight loss. On a recent episode of Diagnosis Unknown on Discovery Health, one woman who suffered from this condition ate only chicken breasts and broccoli while hitting the gym for several hours a day, continuing to gain weight. This should show that diet and exercise does not always work and the body's other mechanisms may be effected causing fat to be stored even when it should be used for energy.
This article gives me new reason not to make out with fat chicks.
Note that one of the first publicized waves of RIAA lawsuits coincided with a heavy marketing campaign by Apple and Pepsi for free downloads on iTunes.
Coincidence? I think not. Heck, some of the kids being sued caught some good airtime in the commercials.
Yeah, unfortunately there is something wrong with that equation. It does not take into account of the direction of which the asteroid will be deflected. Although I hope that the mathematics used to base the "crash" on would be calculated so that it does not shift the objects into a collision course with Earth. Knowing us, some organization will use British units, one will use Metric.
It had to do more with me commenting on the original post. I thought you made a good point and then followed up with a reason.
I dont' think tom quite understands video compression in the DivX sense at is not lossless.
MPEG-4 ASP encoding's end stage is reducing the entropy further using huffman coding. Running it through ZIP afterwards should not give much more compression. Anything that you will compress further is in the AVI (or other container's) information.
The there's also the issue of student motivation to actually study in the first place.
And lets think about the motivation of extra homework here. If my teachers assign a boatload of homework and I can only do half of it before falling asleep and get reprimanded by my teacher the next morning, and that reprimand would be identical to if I didn't do ANY homework at all, what's the motivation for me to actually try in the first place?
When I was 13 years old in my first Algebra class, she notoriously assigned the students 3+ hours of homework a night, and of course after being reprimanded for doing a shitty job (I was going through my growth spurt at the time, I really was sleepy), I stopped doing at as the punishment for not doing it at all was the same. Of course my grades sucked for that class. The next year for geometry, my new teacher assigned modest amounts of work. I actually did it and came in the top of my class.
And they keep saying women have a tough time in tech

I thought strong opinions were self-reinforcing. Disclaimer: I didn't read the article, just the title.

Only the real Apophis had better aim and was able to do it in months

Lay off the alcohol and get more exercise. You'll notice a great change in about 2-3 days (of not drinking, exercise takes a little longer to kick in)

Obviously, they even misspelled Rensselaer as "Rensellaer" the article. I wonder if they checked the spelling on her resume.
Still flattered that she chose to "go" to my alma mater though.
I didn't know that climate change could affect the date of the equinox...
