I want a LOT of empty cabs filling the city streets, that is how I find a ride and get to where I am going...
This whole don't want cabs around because they are an environmental nightmare - that was created by the cab industry to create a false shortage (kinda like what this article is talking about) created by the city to keep rates high. I was shocked when I was in Austin and actually had to take a cab because Uber wasn't allowed there how expensive it was (close to 4x - not even close to the worst surge pricing I have ever seen, about 2.5x)
Can I get VC funding to create a Whatsapp clone that simply forwards ALL messages from person A to person B to the NSA branches off all government (USA, UK, France, Russia, China, North and South Korea, Iraq, Iran, all 198 or so of them). I should be able to raise simple VC to fund the project - and since users don't care grab a 50 percent market share (because they don't care it is flip a coin on if it is me or it is Whatsapp). Since this is an advertised feature vs Whatsapp's advertised feature of end to end security - we can judge how important this feature is to end users.
VC please send your offer sheets to me here, I am willing to give away 25% non-voting shares in exchange for 10% of the valuation of Whatsapp/WeChat/something similar
So you are going to create a 50% tax on all capital creation events. Realize that these events aren't "Profit" in the sense that the company is just saying we will give a fair value to our capital so we can have cash for what ever reason they end up needing cash. So some area creates a 50% tax on the event, not only that - but the people taking that 50% now have an effective say in how the company is run... Imagine if Menlo Park got a 10% say in how Facebook is run... Do you think Mark would keep his company there, or have "headquartered" it in nearby sunnyvale, or palo alto... Heck don't even have to move the employees, just put a small office that is the "headquarters" of the company. For a small enough sized company (that is still trying to raise money either through private investment, or on the open market) you just move everyone to an office building 2 miles down the road in a different tax jurisdiction.
Many degrees require an internship -> Look at education majors. This makes internships very competitive, if you don't get one you don't graduate. That means the employer has all the power in the transaction, oh you want to make minimum wage - we have another applicant that will take the job for free, you want to work for free, we have an applicant that will pay us to train them.

In many other environments, who you have worked for in the past matters more than current skills. Oh you didn't carry coffee for a top magazine, politician, judge... why should we let you work for us? These also tend to be unpaid.
Now really what you want to see out of an internship is the company provides value to them (You interned at Google, cool) and you provide value to the company (Wow, look at the code you produced in 3 months for our project). This leads to an environment that is paid and provides a valid working experience rather than how many unpaid people do you have around to take up empty office space.
Many industries need to look at their intern programs, re-evaluate them and begin to pay at a minimum Minimum Wage.

Americans with Disability Act.... No, that doesn't mean American Discrimination act where there are protected classes that you can't discriminate against.
Lawyers are the only remaining people using wordperfect. The legal profession is so antiquated because any efficiency isn't needed. They bill by the hour - so if they worked twice as efficiently - they would have to increase their clients... What a sham of a profession.
Yes, if they brought the 90 Billion into the USA where it is needed they would have to pay taxes on it. Makes more sense to sell bonds in the US and leave the money "overseas" invested in US treasuries for the rest of eternity.
Got to love our stupid tax code at work - creating inefficiencies the world over
Just plant it next to your brand spanking new Nuke reactor to power this. Looking on the web, the most powerful Nuclear site contains 3 reactors generating 3,937 MW of power... Quickly divide this by 328KW leaves us with abut 12K cars super charging at once.
If you have 3500 acres to spare you could go with Solar. The largest solar plant produces 400 MW, dividing by 328kW leaves us with a little over 1000 cars during a sunny day.
YMMV
The internet isn't being taken over. All ICANN controls is the DNS subsystem. If it becomes abused - the internet will treat it as a failure and route around the failure (ie. One of the alternate DNS systems will become popular instead). How simple is it to route around this failure... Run your DNS resolver and adjust the root hints file to point to somewhere other than the 13 DNS roots out there.
Lower the drinking age to 16 years, and raise the driving age to 18 years
Worst idea ever. Why do we need to raise the driving age to 18? If you have a teen age child - you know how hard it is to get them to all of their activities, school, friends, work... The easy solution is to have them get their drivers license and get them a car to use. If they want to do anything somewhere else all you need to provide is the gas money - not take time off of work, or make them stay at home and do nothing.
I do agree with lowering the drinking age to 16. Much better that kids learn to drink around their parents that can monitor and encourage good behavior. Nothing like getting your kid to appreciate a good 20 year old single malt - no way they can afford to binge drink that in college.
This is what I've never quite understood: why does it seem that zoning laws are allowed to ignore constitutional freedoms? Banning research and development, "including software coding" would seem to ignore the right to free speech, free assembly and the right to privacy (if it's my property and I'm not doing anything dangerous toward my neighbors, why does the city care what I'm doing inside?)
Look, I understand that we don't want coal factories building next to residences. That all makes sense to me, and I could see an argument that this doesn't restrict constitutional freedom. But where does a city get off telling a person they can't run a business (e.g. sole proprietorship) out of their home?
So while I'm afraid that Palo Alto could follow through on this threat, it boggles the mind how it could in the USA. I also think it would be royally dumb for them to kick out all of these businesses too, but that's a different discussion.
You missed the correct amendment. It is the 5th amendment... Very specifically the taking clause that would prevent Palo Alto from taking the use of my property without compensating me for it. I don't think Palo Alto could afford to pay companies for their now worthless buildings as what else could you use them for?
AMD can beat an Intel processor from Last year with their processor that is due out next year. By that time Intel will have jumped 2 generations (almost) and where will AMD be?
This isn't a telco play (2km doesn't get you anywhere... Plus who needs 100G to the home today - I would settle for 1G) - it is a data center play. 2km is a data center distance, large clusters are easily hosted in rooms of this size - and even inter rack distances can get into the 10's of meters. Frankly others have had 100G silicon photonics out for a while (read about a year).
A 5% return on 1,000,000 is 50K a year. That doesn't go very far when you have to cover your medical expenses, housing, food, and hopefully seeing your grandkids.
1,000,000 dollars isn't really all that much. Take an average 40 year working life, invest/save 25K a year - 40 years later... magic 1,000,000. Rather than complain about someone who provided value to millions of customers - why don't you go after the football/basketball/baseball players that get paid millions a year to play a game.
Retail investing should be banned. Unwashed masses should only be allowed to by index funds.
Wow - this has to be the stupidest thing I have ever seen.
Please lets start with a few problems:
1. Please define Unwashed Masses and give a definition that will show who is in/out of the group that isn't allowed to trade
2. Please define index fund - separate an index fund from something like Magellan which is one of the larges funds in the world, but is far from an index fun
Now that we have that out of the way, explain how making choices for myself should be made unlawful? Are you going to ban the lottery that has an even lower payout? What about my 401K plan, what choices am I allowed to have in my 401K... Is this different than "retail investing"?
And what video card do you think a Lights Out server uses?

Why would anyone ever pay this tax?

Don't forget the biggest draw on 2.4GHz Obligatory XKCD
Americans with Disability Act.... No, that doesn't mean American Discrimination act where there are protected classes that you can't discriminate against.
So, I have a customer facing business that is open from 8AM to 5PM. How do I provide a flexible work schedule as an accommodation?
As it stands, solar energy represents only one percent of the country's energy output
and
Today, it stands at 11 percent
Am I missing something here? How is it that it Is it simply Solar in the first one, and all renewable energy in the second? Still seems strange
Into the operating system?
I thought that was considered Illegal

Don't forget to Ban DiHydrogen Monoxide
She got her whole e-mail server wiped without a DoJ indictment. I would say that is a pretty major accomplishment.
I would call a 40% fall fairly significant... Of course I only had one semester of statistics in college - so what do I know about the subject
This is a non-event at worst
The Internet is for Porn
limited playtime
Don't know about you, but my daughter's school has two PokeStops and a PokeGym
