  2. Only hope lies in increased popularity. on Will MacIntel Hardware Open The Door for Mac OS X CAD? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Hopefully the switch means increased popularity which will lead to more support from venders. I'm an engineering student (ece) so i don't usually deal with cad and solid works but i deal with other stuff like spice and vhdl. Luckily eagle comes for os x.

Biggest complaint though is that most software that is "ported" uses X11. It's quite nasty.

If a doctor screws up somebody dies. If an engineer screws up lots of people die. If a lawyer screws up bad news for the victim (or the defendee). If a web browser has a security flaw people may lose some money but nobody dies and it's easily preventable like you said.

  6. As a 4th year engineering major... on Why Students Are Leaving Engineering · · Score: 1

I'm in 4th year engineering. Those of us who make it this far (massive attrition rate) have to be pretty smart, hard working, and full of energy. Not to mention that it's a 5 year program in many places. We all realize that some day unless we get into management or business we'll be busting our asses yet earning less than our potential elsewhere. It would be so much easier to become an mba or lawyer and get the big $$$. We're not in it for the money though but i'm fed up of people abusing that and having us work in high tech sweat shops.

Doesn't it make more sense to have content seperate from presentation when preparing articles for journals. Surely they must do some editing and layout changes and stuff. latex does a pretty damn good job or being "generic" unless you use non-standnard templates or whatnot. I sure as hell don't like spending hours laying things out then to have it all in the first place yet have it be "re-processed" later on. What confuses me more is so many scientists and engineers use latex in the first place. I see authors use it lots too.

Smaller programs especially that we use in engineering become obsolete on a daily basis it seems. A lot of electrical/computer engineering programs especially for devices or programming these devices. Often these companies get bought out or lost forever. Then there's all the cad and simulation software. I can't even think of it all but i've come across a lot of essentially unusable stuff as a result.
