Straight from my lawyer: If you live in a "Right to Work" state, your non-compete is probably worth zilch to your employer (or former employer), other than as a scare tactic.

I left a company a couple of years ago in a right to work state. They sent me a letter after I left, stating I could not do web development in the region the company operated (I had been a wev developer for them). However, after a call from my lawyer to their lawyer, they backed off fast. Even their lawyer wouldn't back there play!

Check the laws in your state.

I have good frieds at M$. This is no trade secret, but MAC OS X is not the only place they are getting ideas. Just about every person on know as M$ (about 10) has some linux distro running at home or in a VM. I am sure we can all find features in linux that the new Windows will have.

Seriously, they should just port all their stuff to linux and built a Windows GUI to replace X (I have nothing against X, that would just be a good strategy for M$. Or, they can keep making all the friggin money they are making now).

While I am a huge SETI fan, I immediately noticed the menu system at the top of the Astrobiology Magazine website. It gives the user of the site the ability to email the story, fax it, download it in Word, Acrobat or PalmDoc, or make it printer friendly. Among other options, it also will translate to Spanish, and read the article to you in MP3.

A lot of work, I think kudos should be given to the web dev team that put this site together. Very cool site!

  10. Google NOT Netscape on Microsoft Wants to Take on Google · · Score: 1

I hold the belief that 50% of the reason M$ won the "Browser War" was the failure of Netscape to put out an innovative product. Netscape stood still while M$, while blundering, did move forward. We could spend hours discussing M$ vs. NS, but I think you get the point.

Google is not the same. Just as MSN was not successful in taking on AOL, I do not think M$earch will be successful against Google. Google is constantly working to not only improve its own search technology, but has also introduced many other successful services. I believe they will continue to do so.

And I will now officially apologize if I equated AOL to be a quality service like Google.

  13. A Purely CompSci perspective on A College Without Microsoft? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Most people go to college to get a degree, to get a career to make a living. That is a real-world answer if you ask a college student. This is the way I felt when I went to school.

During my time in a small school's CompSci program, I was exposed to many different programming environments, including Windows and a very young Linux (at the time).

I think it would have been profoundly wrong to deny myself and my peers (other students) the ability to use M$ stuff in college. One of the major recruiters on campus was MicroSquish. A lot of my friends got jobs with them, or programming in a Windows environment for someone else. I also know people working in Sun, AIX, HP-UX, Mac and Linux environments. However, the majority of programmers I know from college are on M$ in some fashion or another for their daily work lives.

While I admire the spirit of the donation in question, I think it would be detrimental to not allow the individual student the choice to take advantage of all career paths available.

Use the money to promote Linux, but don't blackmail the school by doing it. Maybe insist that none of the money can be used to by machines that will ever run M$, or M$ software. But don't take the freedom of choice away from kids trying to get a job in a tough economy.

That is from a purely CompSci perspective.

I only continue inteviewing those that didn't flunk the test. I am not a good test taker, but I think I am a fine programmer. So, I don't want to miss a good programmer just becuase they don't test well. However, If someone flunks the test, that means (to me) that they don't no sh!t. Next, I have a real-world programming problem I faced a while back that I offer to the candidate. During the interview, we walk through how to solve the problem. This gives me a good window into their analytical abilities, programming skills, and general organizational and thought processes. The problem is solved with psuedo-code, but I make sure to ask some questions relating directly to "mechanical" issues of programming (memory amangement, data connection, remote data, Big O, etc). The third ingredient for me is gut feeling. I have a pretty decent knack for spotting BS.
