    OS/2 was a joint project with M$. Therefore M$ owns some of the sourse cod. They would never opensource it. Not only are they evil and all that OS/2 contains some win code.

    the matathon record doesn't get 10 mins shorter. That would be an unreasonable long term model. It may get .01% shorter which is about 10 mins in the short term, but as the times decrease so does the decrease per year.

    time = 3600 - year^.0001
    (all times were pulled oout of my ass)

    However mores law specifically referres to doubling.
    transistors = 2^year
    which will hold true as long as we can keep the chips from meting themselves.

    In your analogy it's not apples v. oranges. you don't mentio apple TCO at all. Plus Macs aren't really a server platfor anyway. It should be oranges v. grapefruit(does linux have a fruit. we need one)

    i'm fairly sure i could setup an environment where i could administer as many linux boxes as i needed. Thousands even. A few well organized shell scripts and i'd be there. A properly setup and locked down linux box should never require individual intervention except for dead hardware. routine maintanence could be handled for all desktops at once, all servers at once, etc.

    NO. choice is good. I'm not sure how to have the user chose b/t KDE/GNOME, but as long as programs are logically designed we should be ok.

    Make Graphical Setup "Wizards" For Everything.
    Fine, but don't write ones that create illegable config files. Once you're used to it editing config files is the easiest way to config apps.

    Binary Distributions For Everything.
    Once again, choice is good. Just don't use RPM. It will confuse and piss off the users. Plus, local compiling allows more configuration. As computers get faster, local compiling is better.

    Workstation Configurations With Dangerous Deamons (ftpd, httpd, etc...) Turned Off By Default.

    IMO, this is better. There is no app compatability issues between different distros/platforms. This diversity while still maintaining compatability is the biggest strength of OSS.

    i disagree: cursers: the default is fine, and there is a way to change it from black to white if you prefer white. Or are you waiting for GNU/Comet curser? AA: either i can't tell weather or not a font is AA or it was enabled by default in the gentoo euild. If i don't have AA i'd say it's pretty overrrated. buggy alpha chans? never experienced that. Maybe i'm easier to please. The one thing i think linux needs is improved copy / paste. If more apps also supported the cut/paste buffer system in addition to the select buffer that would be ideal,

    While I do have a few gripes w/ Apple, this is a perfectly decent strategy. Every machine will come with the iApps included, and if you don't need upgrades, don't pay for them.

    Background checks are important. While i doubt there are any terrorists trying to work on the project, i'm sure there are at least some students at MIT who plan to take whatever they learn back home. The US gov should not be funding foreigh research with our tax dollars. In fact there is something to be said for not allowing any non-citizens to work on cutting edge research.

    Broadband. It changed the web. All of a suddon band was cheap and sites used it. This also led to higher band charges for sites as the primary cost of a site changed from storage to bandwidth. Bring on th pop-ups, pop-unders and flash ads.

    This is the better slution. the UI would be the same except when you hit the arrow it opens a list as it does, but each list item can either be clicked on or expands to another submenu. Not too bad. If you don't hit the arrow i think the foreward button should behave as it does now.
