I claim the original comparison is too broad, and only works when defined. A majority can't exist as a class without allegiance/resistance to something. Just being able to go from A to B doesn't define someone as a generic car owner. It only defines them as a commuter...they can be using trains, taxis or bicycles...furthering a breakdown of definition...cars, then, become less of a point to your argument.

So how comparative are enthusiast OS's vs. Windows?

Can we see J & J Desktop Windows users rising up in rancourous vervor if Redmond said that support for all things Windows would end as the new year begins? Doubtful...they would simply wait for a substitute to fill the (perceived) gap. Would Apple users howl if Cupertino said support would end for...oh wait... OS 9.x support will continue, won't it...

The car thing only works for me if it is bland vs. enthusiast....not cars in general.

Second, remember your goal. This is to support your child. Not to defend yourself as a parent...not to cave in to a doctor or teacher without enough time to help your child. This is the hard part.

I think you're confusing marketing and mass production with the ability of a single individual. Don Henley can't sit in his studio and burn CD's by the millions, now can he? But he can put up a website, with 10 or 20 MP3's, and let me use PayPal to download the ones that interest me. Can Don make money this way? Depends on his overhead and success with his fans. Can he get stinking rich? Not until the corporate stench leaves the room, no.

The major houses have no qualms about taking advantage of any artist they sign. None.

Anyone that imagines I can cause pain to a recording artist by duplicating his/her CD at home needs to study the economics of the recording industry just a bit closer. I worked in that industry just long enough to decide there was nothing glamorous about the way signed artists are treated.

My point is this...the houses make a profit any way they can. I make a statement any way I can. One of us can sleep at night.
