    I was once asked what the Win 95 splash screen was all about...when I explained it was something along the lines of a commercial advertisement, the reponse was "oh...brainwashing...". I guessed this was from someone that would know about this first hand.

    • xBox (notable as in conspicous in it's absence)
    • Security advancements
    • Handicapped enhancements (hands-free, etc)
    • Walkup's for visitors (roving terminals that find you)
    • Virtual labs (instant on workbench that doubles as a training desk)
    • Hot swap connectivity (Apple's Rendezvous, anyone?)
    • Headmounted displays (Dolby Surround headphones and body mounted CPUs)
    It appears whomever coughed up this OOTNF idea spent 1/2 hour watching the Jetsons and decided they could milk some publicity.

    The largest % of what MS 'buys' is put on a shelf and never allowed out. This keeps MS from having to compete with yet-another-good-idea.

    I bring this up, because I consider it a good idea to remember that just because MS can or does buy a company, it doesn't mean the consumer can always expect to see those products with a MS brand.

    Tip for the day:
    Remember, investing in MS is risking having your own money used against you in the marketplace.

    That 'monitor' appears to be rear projection...I doubt the resolution would appeal to anyone used to a CRT or LCD for office work. The room is strictly a concept mockup.

    OLE will bring us larger yields for displays, but I'm holding out for holographic imaging for anything larger than a meter wide.

    Gates book, 'The Road Ahead' was disconnected from reality as well. MS was late to the Internet, and continues to exhibit a follow-the-leader style of reaction vs. action thinking. They don't get it and they never will.

    ...throwing in the SUSE demo that runs from CD. This way they can do more than just wonder, and it won't involve reworking their HD in the process. After all, the goal is to get them off Windows, not make them so comfortable they'll stay.

    Or is this some ploy from another MS shill, looking for ideas, and/or converts to drink yet more of the kookaid....

    IS a superior system... Ok, since you said it here, it must be true.

    'Everybody'....who is that? You and your immediate family? The market is global, and not that simple.

    None of what you said holds water, especially since the entire effort, for both Sony and MS, is about software, not about hardware.

    Websters defines 'MS Troll' as a paid marketing wonk assigned to online chat rooms and forums where they pretend to be average Joe consumer, touting MS superiority where it doesn't exist.
    Some would say it's simply a waste of an MBA degree.

    As already suggested, OS X is a good start, but you perhaps should outline your environment and goals a bit better first.

    That said:
    1.) Educate your users and let them know your expectations.
    2.) Learn how to lock down a drive and system folder.
    3.) Learn how to hide various folders and how to track changes
    4.) Create and deploy an easy to use and reliable backup program.
    5.) Inventory your hardware and software.

    I think we both agree on the definition of lifestyle, now.

    But again, I fail to see how anyone can tout a 'managed lifestyle' without believing it can be better managed through the application more information.

    Adopting one diet and stress reduction program over another is subjective. But being able to cache that against your specific physiology is practical...and for some people, worthwhile at any price. A DNA map of your own can only be a plus, and when it comes to worrying about the deep end of the gene pool, it just might be better than swimming lessons.

    Westerners have failed themselves by buying into the myth of 'well care' and stress management. It's just not that simple.

    There may be a gene for believing that 'lifestyle' is important, but I think it's too subjective to be touted as a means to an end.

    'proper lifestyle' is a myth. State of mind and environment wield much more influence than something as basic as diet. Try factoring in no diet and see what happens...try feeding the same family the same foods, good or bad, for three generations and see what effect that has in the end....I say not nearly as much as some people today claim.

    We're talking about physical predispositions that tend to disregard lifestyle. Some cultures tolerate what would be considered toxins to others. One man's junkfood is another man's pet.

    People that spend on this now are investing in knowledge....knowledge they can use now, and in the future (this includes ways we can't imagine today).

    I'm sorry, but I fail to see the insight in trivializing this kind of opportunity.

    I can use compact flash or memory stick and never have to say sorry when it comes to OS. What kind of camera binds you to any OS? ..don't answer that...it was rhetorical. I use either compact flash or DV/FireWire and I'm OS free at the moment. NT at work and OS X & Mandrake at home.

    Then you get into things like 'visible spectrum'. Most creatures with a need for more than human level visual acutity & resolution don't use visible light, or even light, at all. There are frequently much better tools for gathering information. Graphic imaging is only one, and not a requirement for survival, I should think.

    Stereoscopic imaging, such as ours, benefits predators that hunt primarily during the day. Since our food needs have eased, we've become more used to using our sight to support mating and communication, rather than just food supplies.

    Once we learn how to communicate with our minds, and procreate without regard for gender, our visual ability and eyes may well diminish to the point of being nothing more than jewelry.

    1.) The Canon mentioned is not a digital camera.

    2.) If you are intimidated by file size, you're most likely behind the curve. For me, a 128mb CF is small. I don't find buying more an issue.

    I just spent the weekend shooting around Beijing, and between digital photos and DV, I'll have less than 500mb. My bottleneck is the time it takes to move the data, not to store it.

    Since the Canon mentioned is not digital, I'd have to say....not.

    PhotoFina deals with more than just digital cameras. It's not yet time to assume that film is dead.
