Read the article...they don't just plug them in and turn them on.
"The Supercomputer, unofficially nicknamed Big Mac, was built in just three months. Right from the start there were major hurdles that could only be overcome with significant construction in and around the building. Running 1100 computers in a 3000 square foot area sends the air temperature well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact the heat is so intense that ordinary air conditioning units would have resulted in 60 mph winds. So specialized heat exchange cooling units were built that pipe chilled water into the facility."
The 'project' uses the same amount of electricity as 3,000 average sized homes. There are many more devices deployed than just the 1100 G5s. The cooling system alone is a major power eater. Read the articles:)
10.2.8....urgg....
Should have read: '10.3/Panther is a tease...' [clip]
Again, what happened to all the talk that Panther would at least pretend to be 64-bit, and be the OS of choice for all those G5 owners, looking for way to leverage their purchase? This Panther is not targeted at them at all. They may get something free, but it won't be the one true G5 OS they are (still) waiting for, and will have to pay for eventually.
Panther was widely touted as the 64-bit jump, and now, there is no mention of such support. Apple's page doesn't say it is for G5's, so how can those owners feel they are getting anything special?
"...and is designed to run on the following Apple products with built-in USB support: iMac, iBook, Power Macintosh G3, Power Mac G4, Power Mac G4 Cube."
10.2.8 is a tease...an expensive incremental tweak. It also sounds more like revenue for Apple, than for any groundbreaking usage users should be excited about, sorry.
Should I/we ask Jamie directly if he needs help editing for next release...or contact the publisher, etc. (I'm a tech writer by trade & use Webmin on Linux and OS X.)
Jamie's work has helped me, perhaps I can return the favor.
This software updates Mac OS X 10.2.6 or 10.2.7 to version 10.2.8.
Important: This update works only with Power Mac G3- and G4-based desktop and portable computers, including iMac, eMac, and iBook. This update does not work with Power Mac G5 computers.
There are tons of free tools, filters, sounds etc. that can add to the things you can do w/iMove/iDVD. Your example is a good one.
I'm in the middle of a 15 minute (iDVD) wedding DVD/video for some friends. They tell me these things go for $500.00. One job at that rate, would pay for DVD Studio Pro:)
Too many users seem chagrined about not being able to create fluid epics via iDVD. I'm always amused by the ones that complain about the 60~90 minute limit of iDVD. It wasn't that long ago that it cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to push video around the way we can with iMovie and iDVD. I can make worthwhile video with both of them. Your expectations sound appropriate.
While I would never attempt to catagorize one person's efforts, the line between hobby and serious is clear when the limits of the free apps are encountered. I have no issue with this practice. I can find out if I really want to go deep into video making without spending the money for FCP or DVDSP. Seems ironic, however, that to get the most out of the 'free' apps, you need to spend $$ to buy this book:)
For those that think they're getting the world with the iLife suite, think again. After spending +/-$3k on the computer and +/-$2k on the camera, another grand or so for 'real' software seems fair.
I just bought a copy from the local Apple Store. Worth every penny. Humourous.
I especially appreciated the admonition to buy DVD Studio Pro if you need anything more than the toy apps that are part of Apple's iLife suite. iDVD is nice, but it is limited, and not meant for serious work. Same w/iMovie, etc. Great starter apps...lousy production tools:)
I tried to sign on to help work on the Mac version of OO...they were looking for a steward at the time, and simply rejected any 'outside' ideas for direction, etc. Seems they were and still are rudderless for the Mac port effort.
I spent 6 months trying to get someone to take my offer to help seriously, and gave up. And don't get me started on the squabling on the Mac dev forums for OO...if you're not on the good old boys list, you ain't spit.
At the risk of redundancy..... iDVD will not work with external drives...sorry, just had to make sure this gets repeated so it won't be repeated later:)
Just because this id is not as old as yours is no indication of how long I've been dropping by:)
R/C everything so long ago I have to take my shoes off to count...
Been there done that...years and years ago. R/C helo sending video to a Powerbook. R/C cars sending video to a monitor on the side of the track. How boring today.
Means little old me has the lead on so many...how can that be? Oh, wait...this is the new/.
Sure, old news, like two years isn't new here....and lame articles that don't inspire....not new either...and even more lame comments...well, what would/. be without them?
But all of the above as a routine?
It's true folks, this place is no longer the touchstone it used to be...pack it in packers, this dump is officially dead wood.

Hydroforming is the current method of choice. Hard tooling is low-tech. I smell an opportunity...
must have coffee...

:)
I agree

Gates didn't do shit to make this happen.... As the article states, Gates was powerless and had to wait like everyone else.

...exactly. What is surprising is that us stoopid humans think we can match all those years with a few visits to the lab :)
That's the $64 question....why?
Why is it more capable than what man can do it a lab? Answer that and print your own money...
...redundant, of course, but so is the lament for Asian language support :)

Even tho mail isn't going anywhere, the app smiles and promises that all is well.
Perhaps something else already running on my box is the issue, but when it comes to enabling sendmail, this app will not work 100% of the time.
