    Scientists do not ignore vast areas of human nature. They study it just like they do with other subjects. The trouble comes when you try to place objective labels on subjective phenomena. Good scientists know not to do that.

    LOL! Not a stretch? Name one of the whims of the universe that you think of it as having. OMG you crack me up. Don't confuse poetry and analogy with reality. The Universe simply IS. It has no notions or whims. To even think it is delusional.

    But how bad is it? How many pounds does the atmosphere weigh? I hate when journalists just throw out huge numbers like 10 billion. I'm not saying this is not a problem, it's just that I have no idea if the atmosphere ways a million billion pounds or a trillion billion pounds or what, so how polluted are we getting here? It's just a useless number.

    That's because while programming, your thinking about each segment of the array can be distinct in time from thinking about each of the other arrays. I.e., you do not think of other parts of the arrays (or only think about immediate neighbors or extremes) while thinking about one part of the array. To visualize something means to create it as an intuitive experience that can provide access to a higher level of thinking about it, by noticing patterns and properties that exist only in relation to the other pieces.

    It doesn't seem that strange. They probably regulate airborne communications, not airborne communications hardware. It's not the Federal Communications Hardware Commission, after all. Not that I think the government should have power not explicitly granted in the Constitution, but that's another story. :-)

    I don't think that this proves the technology is useless, just that it's possible to compromise it. I mean, I lock my doors when I leave, but a "security expert" could pick the lock and be in inside 30 seconds. That doesn't make locks ineffective. It's not perfect, but it's not useless just because it can be compromised. Slashdotters don't seem to understand security at all. You want to make it hard to do terrorism. You cannot make it impossible.

    it would be nice to have the option to buy unlocked phones from any vendor and use them with any provider, but I'd bet that less than a quarter of the customer base would make use of this on a regular basis.

    Maybe only a quarter of the customer base would use it, but everyone would benefit by the increase in competition that would result.

    This is all a red herring. Any administrator has sufficient privs to block out all other admins should he/she want to. So even if you give the password to five people, it doesn't help, unless I'm missing something.

    People don't install Windows in a VM because they don't prefer to run OS X. That would be retarded, kind of like your question. It's done to run one or two pieces of software that the user needs to have but which only run on Windows. For me, this is a particular piece of GPS software I love. I run Windows under virtualization once every two months or so to access that GPS program. The rest of the time, I run Mac OS. Why? Because I choose to.

    As for why people buy iPhones and then crack them, the answer is that first, iPhones are cool, not just as in trendy, but they are very nice to use. Second, the software available for them increases dramatically when cracked. Why is that so hard to understand?

    Once upon a time, ebay was just an auction site that let people buy and sell informally. Now that they have mixed in retail sellers, it's not any longer an auction site anyhow. When you sell an item for a fixed price, as many retailers do on ebay, it's not an auction, sorry.

    The researchers said "we think blah blah" not "this proves blah blah." So let's not get huffy about what they conclude. It's just conjecture. So what if your opinion differs from theirs? In my opinion, this is a perfectly useless and ineffective study.

    Good to know, thanks! I didn't think of that. In essence, it sounds like a system to convert solar energy into diesel fuel. Wonder what the efficiency from "well to wheel" is compared to other methods. At any rate, me likey now.
