Your "argument from intuition" is not a good one. Mathematics often comes up with nonintuitive results. In fact, that's the point, in a way. Mathematics is a set of rules and a language meant for re-expressing known truths in forms that lead us to realize new truths, all by rearranging things by the rules of logic. Here's an example: exponents were created to describe the number of times you multiply a number together with itself to get an example. 2^6 is 2 multiplied by itself 6 times. So what sense does it make to raise a number to a negative power? Well, ok, it's dividing one by that number a certain number of times. Or how about a fractional power, even more bizarrely? It turns out that devising rules that "make sense" often only make sense in the context of exactly the kind of discussion this guy has, purely within the realm of mathematics. I'm not saying his idea is good, rather that your argument is bad.:-)
I don't have cruise control, so I do this all the time. People still tailgate me.
..and yet you do it all the time anyhow. Innnteresting.:-) I guess YMMV, I have noticed it works great, because it requires people to pay attention, and most tailgaiting is just people not paying attention.
A better strategy is to just vary your speed by +/- 2 MPH in a continuous cycle. Then even if they don't pass, they have to give you more room. Try it.:-)
I gave someone a quote of £175 to fix their laptop. They preferred instead to spend £339 on a new one. Even if the cost is lower for repairs people still prefer to buy new (which doesn't make much sense to me).
I think the reason people prefer to just get a new one is they figure that once there is a problem, even after you fix it, there may be more, the 175 is a low estimate in their minds. Try giving people a GUARANTEE that your repair won't be greater than 175 and I'll bet you'll see more people take your offer. Won't make that guarantee? Then maybe you can understand the people easier now.:-)
Employee at company A types a letter on her computer and prints it, mails it to company B. A robot scans the letter and puts it on someone's computer screen. Holy crap, how about using freaking EMAIL instead?
What's the point of worrying about it? The ships will never be built to use this technology. I honestly cannot remember a single prediction made on slashdot of promising new technologies, which actually came to fruition. They always have "just a few hurdles left" before they transformed our lives. In this case, it is literallly and figuratively vaporware.
Good point. I'm hard pressed to think of an example of a recently elected President who was damaging as a CEO of a company and then turned around and made an even bigger mess of the country under his watch. (Sarcasm alert for the ninnies out there)
Hmm, I don't think "pending" means what the author and some other posters seem to think it does. What exactly is pending here? Hint: the word "awaiting" is a synonym for "pending." I don't get it.
Interestingly, anonymity is the #1 reason I've heard as an objection to a paper trail. How do you verify that somebody's paper matches what the machine says unless you give the machine the ability tell who voted which way? As soon as you've done that, you do not have a private ballot any longer, technically. You could make it illegal to check, etc., but the ability would have to be there, or the paper trail is not very useful. I don't know a way around this.
BTW, the current system is not verifiable either. After I leave the polling place, there is no way for me to verify that my vote was counted, is there?
Ha! I went to your link and found "pr0ndex", which is described as follows:
A really simple PHP program for indexing your gay porn (or whatever). The idea is that you just throw this script in your image directory and BAM -> thumbnails of stuff. Requires ImageMagick and 10-20 pictures of Gary Coleman.
You can re-record onto VHS multiple times. I can see for movie rentals how this is a moot point, of course, but for home recording, I think lots of people still record a show while they're away on VHS to do time-shifting.
Let's keep in mind that in building anything, raw materials are not the highest cost. In fact, labor-related costs are #1, probably. As another poster pointed out, this only has to be used on the exterior, so it's only half or less of the total concrete needed, perhaps, plus concrete may not be the biggest materials cost of building a building, plus materials are not even half the cost of construction, so I'm willing to bet if you use this concrete it increases the cost of an office building by maybe 5% max, if that. I'm definitely guesstimating here, but it's not what it sounds like, keep that in mind. I think it would be reasonable to mandate this stuff if it's good as it costs. Plus, it will probably get cheaper over time, as competition sets in due to more stringent standards.
In third world areas where fresh water is an issue usually lack access to large bodies of water,
They can use another technology known as a "pipe" to send the water from the sea inland. Pumping the water will not be nearly as energy intensive as desalination -- well worth it.
Gates is the president of Texas A&M University and a close friend of the Bush family. He served as director of the Central Intelligence for Bush's father from 1991 until 1993.
Great, another Bush yes-man! Oh, yeah, there is going to be real change, uh huh. This President is so freaking insular and one-track minded, it is frustrating in the extreme.
Justice will be served, just leave it to the lawyers! Valiant "civic minded" lawyers will take up this incredibly important cause. In 9 months, 17 million people will get a confusing letter in the snail mail, explaining in the fine print that they get a free coupon for 3 blank CDs and a check for $3.12, in return for waiving their rights to sue Microsoft themselves. The lawyers will make $378,000 each for their valiant efforts.
But be careful: RadioShark is not a very good receiver -- you are limited by the length of the USB cord, and with my RadioShark (which I'll sell you if you want!:-) I have great trouble finding a spot where I can get e.g. Car Talk reliably. Forget about weaker stations. YMMV, my house does not have great reception anyhow, and many are very happy with their RadioSharks, I'm just tellin' ya... speaking of which, I wonder if there is something like it for XMRadio/Cyrius or whatever... so-called satellite radio, you know?
They weren't stupid, they were trying to hold onto their jobs. Vote against PATRIOT Act and in the next election, your opposition will campaign on it
I am so tired of this miserable excuse for crappy behavior from our politicians. "Boo hoo, I had to save my career!" That would be understandable if they were plumbers or lawn cutters. But their JOB is to SERVE the American people and act in our interest. What is the point of them holding their jobs when they don't do it? Oh, I know, they need to stay in office, to prevent their opponent from doing an even worse job, right? Bullshit. When are we going to start asking these creeps to actually put principle above selfishness? Stop voting for Democrats or Republicans or whatever due to party allegiance. Start voting for brave, good people. Yes, there will be more turnover. So what? They all have fat, LIFELONG guaranteed pensions after they leave office. Their DUTY is to SERVE the American people, I repeat!
In tests, Authentic performed as well as 15 human volunteers who were each given a small segment of a painting to study.'
How about comparing the software at identifying fake paintings vs. volunteers, given that both the people and software can look at the whole image if they wish? The restriction to a small piece of the painting is purely to "make it fair" to the software, which won't benefit from the whole painting like a human could.
OK, now hold on. You say that pointing the fan backwards is better than using the sail, but you also say that the sail overcomes the force of pointing the fan forwards at it. WTF? The fan generates force F, let's say. The sail generates force F+g, apparently, able to move the boat forward. Thus turning the fan backward cannot do better than the sail, can it? What am I missing?
Um, I have to ask. What about the air being deflected off the fan? Doesn't it create thrust in the opposite direction from the sail? In fact, I'd expect the boat to move backward, because most of the air from the fan would disperse and not hit the sail.
"octopi and squids"? :-)

If you use Qt for your interface, their GUI builder is pretty good. And it's free. And it generates C++ that you can inspect, modify and understand.

Imagine the fight that would break out if cowboys reach the moon, too!
