  1. WRONG. on ATI R300 and R250V · · Score: 1

You obviously dont play video games, and never had. When QUAKE came out, everyone had 486 DX4 100s. It WOULD NOT RUN acceptably on those machines, P60's were JUST released, and it BARELY ran on those. People weren't getting GOOD performance for QUAKE till nearly 6 months after it was released! The comment came from the PROGRAMMER HIMSELF. Doom3 will NOT run acceptably on these generation of cards NOR the ones posted about here. He told everyone this at E3 recently when he demo'd Doom3 on an UNRELEASED *new* card from either ATI or NV and it WAS STILL TOO SLOW because it was in LOW RESOLUTION. You are so entirely wrong it isnt funny.

  2. Neither! Here's why... on ATI R300 and R250V · · Score: 0
Doom3 is slated to be released next year and WILL NOT RUN WITH THE CURRENT CARDS OR THESE NEWER R300 and NV CARDS. You will need to buy the generation AFTER those to run it. Buying ANY video card right now is tossing your money away unless you don't plan on playing Doom3 (Come on, why ISNT going to play it that buys a 3D gaming card like this??) .. There isn't many "must haves" in the video card life cycle, but for Doom3 it will be a must. Skip these, far too slow, even if they are the fastest on the block right now.

Remember playing Quake1 on your 486 DX100 or P60? Yeah, I thought so .. You went and upgraded the next month, didn't you? Yep. Just after a week you bought that spiffy DX4 120 .. Should have skipped it and waited for the P90.

It is going to happen AGAIN.

  3. Wrong! on ATI R300 and R250V · · Score: 1

This new card is still not fast enough to play Doom3 were it to come out today. Buying these generation of video cards are worthless because they will need to be replaced when Doom3 is released anyways. Just like Doom and Quake made everyone upgrade their systems, Doom3 will make you do both. Technology isn't keeping up with the masterminds. Help.

  4. Still not fast enough. on ATI R300 and R250V · · Score: 1

We still need cards to push three TIMES that to be able to play DOOM 3 by next year. PLEASE hurry up. It will really suck if Doom 3 is released before any cards can play it decently. (The demo shown was on an unreleased card running at low resolution..) ..

With Charter, and digital cable, it costs around $10 a month for the box. When this comes out, they will probably offer choices for the same dulld rab box for $10/mo or the Tivo one for $15/mo .. Charter doesn't seem to do huge leaps in prices unless it's from Basic -> Extended. Extended -> Digital is rather cheap, and the boxes etc along with it .. More than likely most average people would be paying an extra $15/mo for the Tivo like box WITH the added digital channels that come with it. We will so. If it is too much for my dad (Who is really stingy.), then it probably wont be worthwhile for them to invest in this technology. One thing that I bet they are banking on is VIEWING HABITS. With Tivo, you can be ANONYMOUS, or OPT OUT ENTIRELY. I am guessing with Charter, you will NOT have either of those options, so that might even make the service cheaper in the long run. We shall see, but for now, I am glad they're at least TRYING. PVRs are the way of the future for the generation of people who have NO TIME. When you have that extra hour to do nothing, you can sit down and watch your favorite show and be happy and relax.

A lot of people are anxiously awaiting Shadowbane to arrive as the holy grain of MMORPG PvP .. But till then those same people will be trying anything that can get their hands on, including NWN. I have played a few of the NWN PvP deathmatch modules and was quite surprised how fun they were. Definately not for everyone but it shows what people like to do.

  8. Re:Sigh.... on Where are the 'Construction Set' Games? · · Score: 1

Quite the contrary, I buy nearly every game that is released that holds some merit across nearly every platform. Nearly all of my disposable income goes entirely into games and consoles. And I still stand that NWN had too many up-front and glaring bugs to have been released. Other games had bugs sure, but none recently that have diversly affected the primary *gameplay* of the game more than NWN. Morrowind for example had scores of bugs, but nothing game stopping, or so annoying that you couldn't play like NWN has/had. They playtested and got through the game fine, where in NWN anyone who even played the game would have seen many of the obvious as day bugs before they even got 1/4th through the game. Perhaps they spent too much time working on the editor instead of the actual game play engine.

  9. Sigh.... on Where are the 'Construction Set' Games? · · Score: 1
He mentioned he knew about the games with editors.. But after you make a mod with NWN you still need to own the software to play them. Back in the day, game construction sets made games that anyone could play regardless if you owned the creator or not.. It compiled it all for you.

As an aside, NWN is one of the most bug ridden games to come out lately. Pathing is terrible, and all the stats have bugs. Attack modifiers are messed up and randomly change between saves, etc .. It shouldn't have been release with such glaring bugs.

  13. Wont work, here's why. on Microsoft Freon · · Score: 1

Because most of the compliances will need to be upgraded. The XBox2 is already announced, and most likely an XBox3 soon after. The console portion of this Freon box will need to be continually updated. Likewise for the DVD capabilities. The XBox already has major issues with quite a few movies (Lists are out there, do a search.), and so far I have yet to see anyone use the XBox, or even PS2 for that matter as their primary DVD player (Kudos to Nintendo for skipping this hype.). Also, same thing with PVRs, they will need to be upgraded, larger drives, newer software, and this is a monthly fee. So what happens if just one of the 3 components breaks? (I've had a bad PS1 and a bad Tivo in my lifetime, friends have had DVD Players die on them also.) Thats 3 times the failure rate of a normal device you can just rebuy two years down the road. With the new Freon you'll be out most likely $500 instead of $100 or $200 if they were seperate.. Looking at Microsofts track record for defects with the XBox, I think even if the Freon DID look cool, specwise, with all the best software for PVR'n, no one would buy it simply because they didn't want a hunk of plastic that didn't work after 2 years. Many companies have tried making an all-in-one set top box, and they literally went under soon after. This is most likely the beginning of the end for Microsoft in the home entertainment dept.

Do you know how much piracy took away from profits on the original PSX? Almost a billion in profits. People were sticking a chip in the PSX and renting games for 2 days only to burn their own copies. Sure companies still made money, but they coulda made a hell of a lot more.. Taking money away from developers is sad. I know this has nothing to do with the MAME stuff, but mod chips in general are created to allow games that were illegally copied to run on said system. While other uses can be mentioned, you simply cannot deny the primary reason. This is why Napster took a big dump. Sure, lots of indy people were sharing, but the majority were just ripping off everyone. And while music is a touchy subject, games really arent. It's cut and dry since you can rent games before you buy them, and with music you really cant unless you wade through hours of crap on the radio. Sigh.

First, who wants a console when they just want a PVR, and second, who wants a PVR with monthly charges when all they want is an XBox. Their online strategy costs even more money on a yearly basis. Nintendo was smart and has seen what has happened to the CDTV, Dreamcast, and soon Microsoft and will just stay a true to life 100% console machine for the masses while Sony and Microsoft try and duke it out in an unwinable online arena (Really, who cares when all the online games are already on the PC and play BETTER on the PC?) ..
