as much as i appreciate the german way to organize things (and somehow less bureaucratic than in the u.s., where i now live), the standard electronic filing is done with a windows-only software. i had to use vnc on a windows machine at work, logging in from home; funny effect, if somebody else was working late in the office...
well, for me, it is usually easier to use the laptop. i rarely carry the yellow pages around, neither in my backpack nor through the house. though easily enough, the only pizza place here is Leonardo's.
Just don't tell your provider; saves you lots of time (you lost some already by posting here; but so do i; that's another slashdot effect...).
i had such an arrangement with a neighbor Then, in palo alto), by the use of a 150ft cat5 cable connected to his dsl. no problems; over the ca. 6months, there may have been two mornings when i politely waited until 9 to ask him about a problem (being early up myself due to a certain family member). i paid him half of his bill.
if it doesn't work out, there should be no obligations; as simple as that.
at least for the mail part, outlook server access is integrated in the mac os x mail client. which is free if you have a mac, but not FOSS... and that won't help you on x86.
as mentioned by another poster, i also have a s-e T610 (actually, two) with t-mobile; and here is the first time i hear about the lockout of bluetooth features with other phones/companies. maybe you should switch the carrier? the t610 is very nice as remote, too (using salling clicker...), though not as advanced as some of the newer nokias (which e.g. show the cover art when using it as itunes remote...). though, for a german it is kind of weird to see the familiar ugly magenta "T" logo of the formerly state owned german carrier popping up everywhere in the u.s.
thats true; for us the label "disney" on a new movie (since lion king, maybe) is a warning. my son (5) is scared even by some of the better disney cartoons; somehow they always have to contain dark, nasty figures (e.g in little mermaid etc.). in contrast, the bad monsters in monsters inc. are pretty deep and multi-facetted...
... but both won't be accepted in "American Heartland" (Kitchen | Plantation vs. White House). Btw.: Why has Washington D.C. 90% pro Kerry votes? Everybody there should love the President!
European comment, but I still live in the U.S. (Florida!!!).
does anybody know about the vga out? ideally, i would like to present PDFs done in XGA resolution, or at least in SVGA. probably i have to wait 1-2 ipod generations to get this properly done...
1. yes, there are linux distros, even knoppix (have to look up...) don't know about gento (had tried it back then...)
2. using fink.sourceforge.net, you can get the whole (nearly) lot of "linux" software in a debian style system, to run on top of os x or full screen (rootless) or with x11 as primary windowing system. X11 window behavior is determined through your config (KDE, Gnome, blackbox...)
so you are able to have a complete KDE system on top of OS X aqua, and use both at the same time; and if you are a strange person (or need to do it...), you can also have windows under virtual pc etc.
OS X has X11 built in. you can run, at the same time:
OS X "Aqua"a complete KDE or Gnome desktop environment, including KOffice, OpenOffice, Gimp...
ssh -x into any Linux box anywhere
run multiple Windows or x86 Linux emulations in VirtualPC
VNC into your office Windows PC to work with your specific software
distribute all those windows onto virtual desktops, either in OS X (extra app.), or using your X11 environment (KDE, some WM)
too lazy to open up all those options; usually i don't do more than OS X or X11; wouldn't touch Windows (last time for the online german tax system:-( ).
regarding screen estate: every powerbook supports monitor spanning: so you can have a 17in widescreen laptop + a 23in LCD; but your neck will hurt (like from watching tennis from close by). one reason to do it: the window minimizing effect: put the dock on one side of one screen, and minimize a window on the other one. better than any game (for five trys...)./p/
it already did work in 2000, under os 9. and if you compare the current price of my son's 4 year old powerbook to something "similar" in the x86 world (not to talk about the driver pain and probable problems getting linux to run a card on an older machine). and 1070 (education) for a new ibook with dvd and airport card is not so bad either.
1. the mobile hub feature can be useful. traveling with two powerbooks, my wife and i frequently use a single network access (dialup, ethernet) in hotels, sharing it from one machine over ad hoc wlan
2. well, with a powerbook (or stationary mac with airport card), you get this option built in, without any hassle with a separate device or dlls from hell...

Shuttle Fleet Upgraded
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
i attended a very informative presentation by doug oshroff (nobel laureate in physics and member of the shuttle disaster comission), who pointed out that they will do this. there were some bulky foam blocks attached to the bipods, to reduce the thermal leakage at this point. pieces had fallen off 7 times before from there (5 from the columbia), and before the accident nobody had taken the danger seriously (was on their to do list, though).
i remember the old days, "helping out" my colleagues in the university hospital (centrally managed nt4 + sap), with my 1st generation ibook (orange !) + dave networking software... would be different now; it has gotten much better on the mac side;-)

well, although our household is pretty saturated with computers, your writing immediately makes me want to buy a boatload of macs.
are you phil schiller?
(yes, although i am german, i understand it as a joke!)
... and no beowulf comment? no, i won't either!
... there is a manual switch for "de-shuffling" ;-)

both turbo tax (in various incarnations) and the H&R Block software is available for Mac.

well, at least disney had donald...
Here is your cake.
;-)
Can you send something back tomorrow? My birthday; but I prefer some champagne...
And to stay on topic: I second your comment
happy birthday!

well, though i have no idea if the ipod will have the ability to play it: keynote exports to quicktime.
would be a neat feature; now you only have to convince the conference organizers to have a video connection at the podium. and a working remote...
Lick Busk, Marry Kerry...
- IP over firewire (e.g. for fast backups to another machine; yes, FW has built in nework functions)
- Ethernet
- WiFi (built in AirPort)
- GPRS card
- phone over bluetooth
- built-in modem
though, i have no experience if there is a way to automatically disconnect the phone etc. in case a faster option becomes available.well, again two points:
two notes:
1. the mobile hub feature can be useful. traveling with two powerbooks, my wife and i frequently use a single network access (dialup, ethernet) in hotels, sharing it from one machine over ad hoc wlan
2. well, with a powerbook (or stationary mac with airport card), you get this option built in, without any hassle with a separate device or dlls from hell...
(please insert your apple rant here:... thanks.)
Safari can't open "shell:windows" because Mac OS X doesn't recognize Internet addresses starting with "shell:". Oh, wait...
If 42 is the answer to the question of life, the Universe and everything(wikipedia.org), the equation probably is correct and easily to memorize. You may need a larger computer, though...
So much for Germans not being funny.

... just for browsing.
don't know about services, DLLs and such. maybe you are on windows?
