  1. RBL's... on Michigander Beats Spammer With "Junk Fax" Law · · Score: 1

I recently installed a "realtime blackhole list" filter on my Exchange 2000 server. Shout outs to Martijn - the man who wrote the free "ORFILTER". So far, this thing works GREAT. I can't believe how much spam we don't get now!

I've had two instances here where someone wasn't getting their mail. In both cases, the ISP was contacted and they fixed the problem. NO ISP wants an open relay, but sometimes it happens through negligence or incompetance. Closing or blocking these open relays is a great first step in the fight against spam.

Oh, and to check out this filter - go here:

No, these greedy bastards (and not just Sony, btw) want not just some, but ALL to themselves. Their own rules. Their gameplan or no ones. This is why the vast majority of the American public thinks that music companies and those that support them (RIIA, for instance), suck.

And don't get me started about the ridiculousness of 'public performances'. If the RIAA wants the public to feel better about them they should stop suing organizations like the Girl Scouts for singing 'Happy Birthday'.

" ...but who cares? People who license their code under the BSD License don't waste time and energy investigating these types of issues. Instead, they keep coding. "

I care. That doesn't mean I want to mod you down either. It just proves that people don't understand the spirit of the GPL. Why it exists. Why it's important to defend.

Part of the point of the GPL isn't so much the technical aspect of the license - there's RELIGION there also. It is the unspoken belief (well, I think RMS has said something to this effect), that many coders contribute to the GPL codebase to make it better (and therefore save the universe from oppression or something like that) ;)

When one steals from the GPL codebase, their contribution - which if sold is REQUIRED, must be returned to the whole. To not do so, to take the accomplishments of others who build on this license diminishes us all. It's as simple as that. Now, it is apparent (at least to what I've heard) that what this company (Castle) has STOLEN the work of others. Of course it should be looked at.

Hell, since many of us are now paying the "assumed CD-R piracy" fees everytime we buy blanks, this at least is a blatent violation of a legally enforceable license.

  12. Get Fscking Real... on Your Tax Dollars Buying Open Source Software · · Score: 3, Interesting

    Oh, cry me a river.

Most defense contracting is a rubber stamp process. Contractors get the MANDATORY yearly price increases, freely given by the gov't, then you have companies tack on extra in fees with little or no real accountability.

If Lockheed builds your F-16, you get the parts from them. If, for some reason, the price on an F-16 widget goes up 200% in one year, this is rarely challenged. The process to do so costs almost as much.

As a Navy boss once said, "Yeah, they got us on this one, but we'll get them on the BIG ones..." This was for a part that was elevated over 1000% in less than three years time. Total cost was over 10 million dollars. Big ones... Right.

I agree with most of your points but I'm really getting tired of the "Hollywood Solution" to this country's problems. England has Madonna now, and they can have her for all I care. But you know, it figures. Artists like her and the Alec Baldwin's of the world made their money from the very system they want so desparately to escape (by the way Alec, your man lost - you can leave anytime now). Does Hollywood really provide the best moral basis to compare by?

This is the same kind of escapism that bubbled up to the top in the 60's. Maybe part of the problem is that there are fewer and fewer people actually willing to tackle these sorts of issues.

Ever meet anyone who didn't vote in an election because they felt that their vote didn't count? More escapism. The real truth is, they don't vote because the don't want to be blamed if it all goes to hell. Well, GROW UP! Take responsibility and DO something for once. People are people everywhere. If you really want to live somewhere better, why not start in your own backyard?

This country still has much to offer her people. Don't be so quick give up on her when things get rough.
