Slack is great for those users who like to be able to tweak their systems down to the bone. Not to say you cant do this in other distros, it is just easier in Slackware. Its a very bare bones, highly configurable distro. That appeals to many folks (myself included).

  6. No mention of tracking on RFID for Automobile Tracking · · Score: 4, Informative

Everytime someone mentions RFID, the privacy people get to sound off about being tracked and the government being out to get them

The article makes no mention of using this technology for anything other than alerting drivers about road conditions and paying tolls. Even the article title here on slashdot is misleading in that regard.

A lot of people dont have a choice whether it be for work or personal reasons. "Voting with your wallet" is often an impractical short-term solution for people that need a piece of software to work now, not when the company decides to port it to linux.

Its been said over and over: OS's are tools, they all have their strengths and weaknesses, use the right one for the job.

How many people at Microsoft do you think speak the language of 'upper Mongolia' fluently with all the different dialects? Aside from costs, I think knowledge of the language is good reason for them to let local programmers write the software in their own lanuage...plus it creates more jobs for locals!

Companies should develop a solid storyline and some good gameplay characteristics before announcing a game. Id rather have a fun game that doesnt require the latest and greatest than one that has all full motion video but no real substance. Hell i still play Quake 1/2 and Duke3d. Those games have stories and they are fun to play!

I thought that was Lindows market. Has WalMart dumped Lindows or are they coexisting? If the latter, that will be extra confusing for Joe Sixpack buying Linux at WalMart

  18. Govt work on A Thoughtful Look at Indian Outsourcing · · Score: 1

There are plenty of jobs for government agencies and firms that do a lot of contracting for the government (defense). Your average programming job for financial software or something equally mundane is going somewhere else.

Most of the menial programming jobs that can be modularized so to speak, are going away. Innovation and product specialty is here (for now at least)

And before you folks start with the 'slippery slope' argument, remember that it is speculative. Anything could happen, that doesnt mean it will.

I have a certain trust and faith in our government to use these powers within reason (even though there have been notable exceptions, Skylarov for one). Remember that the govt is made up of people and people make mistakes and there are always a few bad people that may stay under the radar but they usually get flushed out
