A friend of mine won a party for 200 friends & family to a screening of the original Star Wars Trilogy when it was re-released. Everyone even got $15 of giftcertificates for food. So I got to drink a small soda and 1/2 a pack of Milk Duds while we had a great time. I sure as shit better be able to get tickets tomorrow!
LoTR made me come to the conclusion to not buy a set the first day it's out. I'll wait for the special edition extended version with the hologram seal and 15 minutes of bloopers from now on.
So all you need is part of a social security number and a name to see what others are doing? I can see coaches doing this to check up on their student-athletes or siblings to rat each other out. Can't wait until someone hacks that system. Whiney sibling: "Mom, Billy has homework." Billy: "No I don't, liar!" Whiney sibling: "Oh yeah, that's not what the webpage says!"
I'll be curious how spammers counteract this. Probably just send more and more to those who aren't filtered. I never thought of filtering all combinations of capitalization. My users were complaining about spam again today. I walked over to discuss it with them and lo and behold, all stuff they signed up for except 2 klez emails.
I got my replacement order in this morning. Their system wasn't recognizing my serial numbers as valid though. Right model number, right range of serial numbers. So their customer service guy just did a manual entry and voila, new ones shall arrive next week.
What really scared me when I first read this is that we just bought 35 new UPS's from APC last month to install next week. Fortunately they are different models. However, from what I've read hear that may not necessarily make a difference.
Even if one of our new UPS's does melt, everyone will just think it is some dumbass burning popcorn in the microwave again (which happens several times a week in the six months I've been here). You would think they would realize they have to either pop it for less time or watch the stupid thing for 3 freakin' minutes.
It's the users. Don't know how they can hire people without much technical experience in our company. My boss (head of IS) tries to tell those hiring to ask about computer skills, but we still get lawyers who don't know shit and administrative assistants who don't know shit.
I spent the last 6 months explaining what Google is to users at my new job. No way in hell am I going to get them to switch to another site if Google still gets them what I need.
I have always thought the easiest people to exploit (not that I do) are minimum wage or poorly paid employees at crappy jobs. You can sweet talk a lazy teenager and usually get what you want, but I think sweet talking an adult gets you more in the long run. Who do you think you could get better results from, a lazy clerk or a lazy manager? I'd take manager any day.
It just reminds me of the GI Joe toys I had as a child. Obviously it would be deadly. I just wonder what those in the military who would drive it think too. As for cost effective, consider the billions+ it takes to design, manufacture, deploy, train on, repair, and upgrade. I'm from the US and am always amazed on the stuff the military comes up with and funds (Discovery Channel, History Channel, TechTV, etc). Obviously cheaper than a tank, but I'd still be more scared of the tank. No matter how kick ass this thing is, I'll always think of Stripes and GI Joe when I see this.
I saw this article this morning. I would probably laugh if I saw it coming over a sand dune. Now a tank, that would be intimidating. I pictured it driving around New Jersey or LA looking to combat gangs and parking violations. I don't see how this could be a cost effective weapon if produced in mass. Perhaps a speciality vehicle (like a few dozen).
Hope my father doesn't mind too much since he had to buy a new f*cking application (have they ever heard of an UPGRADE). I guess we'll see how it goes when i install his new pc next weekend.

Yes, our legal system sucks. However, often unknown details about the McDonald's coffee issue.
1. It was too hot
2. Top was loose
3. The woman needed skin graphs and was home-bound for over a month and causing much pain.
4. Her daughter had to take over a month off of work to care for her
5. All they wanted was medical bill reimbursement but McDonald's gave them the equivalent of "screw you"-hence the lawsuit.
6. After appeal, final settlement decision was undisclosed. However, all said and done-no one retired on this.
(I know the family, these are good people)
I agree with the smoking thing, what kind of idiot doesn't know it kills you.
This would be great for business use or educational use when researching. I'm amazed no one came up with this before.

I saw all the little Hobbits trying to stay warm in WI last night as I left Star Trek (thumbs up by the way). Wish I had known about the 12:01 showing. Will have to save that for Return of the King.
And now that I got my tickets, I get to do it again!!!

I know the grandson of who this happened to. This link gives an accurate description of what really happened...

...I can disable it for my corporate environment. Don't want my computers breaking from poor updates.
guess that didn't happen. oh well, we can always wait until after the superbowl.
...all companies would stand behind their products. I know plenty of people who would like a refund for Windows Me *@&!#
Let the looting begin!
It will decrease my insurance premiums. Probably not.
I rate it a 3.14 or so

maybe my old school can FINALLY get rid of the Macs that no one can support well and have a cost burden on a thin IT dept.
Hopefully our educators can use this as a "teachable moment" and our children will learn from the stupidity of our current administration.
I support our troops, but not their mission. May God & Gates have mercy on our souls.
