  1. Re:Whadda Buncha Lightweights on Critics Pan Nemesis · · Score: 1

I'm not despairing over Star Trek, trust me. I still get hooked whenever I'm flipping through the channels and TNN is showing TNG or any of the movies. And I'm from Milwaukee where we have gotten to watch the Brewers suck year after year and the Bucks suck most years. I feel your pain on the Celtics, doesn't look like they will win it for at least a few more either. Stupid Lakers.

I'll see it and enjoy it no matter how good or bad. It's like watching your favorite sports team. They have good years and bad years, but you still watch for the fun and excitement. There's always a good scene or two you can take with you.

It's amazing how a fiesty a 65 year old woman gets when you tell her the emails from eBay and hallmark are because she spends her time at work bidding on Beanie Babies and sending flowers.

Interns. They're cheap, often eager to learn, and usually a solid supply (depending on your location). When I was an intern at 4 differnt places, yeah I was underpaid and overworked but I was happy to take the opportunity for the experience and resume padding. One internship led to a full time position 6 months later when a position opened up (staff leaving, not new position). I'd love to have an intern again so I can give them the shit work.

  7. Re:Everyone's busy on Fewer Employees + Same Work = Higher Productivity · · Score: 1

Good eye. :-) However, I don't complain about my work load. I take a fifteen minute lunch instead of an hour because usually other stuff goes on that I need to cut it short (stuff just pops up in the office). Instead of a smoking break like most I take a research break. I keep my stress level down, don't bitch for overtime, and I'm able to keep our department informed on what's going on with technology in the world. Works well for all.

  8. Everyone's busy on Fewer Employees + Same Work = Higher Productivity · · Score: 5, Insightful

Everyone is busy. What I don't like is when employees complain how busy they are and yet sit around playing games and looking at their fantasy football stats. Obviously there is a problem if an employee needs to work 10-12 hour days with no lunch and things aren't getting done. However, most of the companies I've been with have employees who get about 3-5 hours of work done in an 8 hour day. Ball parking it, most of these unmotivated employees could get a few extra weeks of work done a year. I know a guy who's company cut their department from 3 to 2. So the 2 guys were each working 20 hours of overtime a week at time and 1/2. It took them two years to realize they could save a fistfull of dollars and improve their worker morale by getting them back up to 3.

Actually, most schools do make the majority of their money from tuition. It's really only the largest private colleges and universities that have large enough endowments to keep tuition low, expand facilities, award full-ride academic scholarships, and sustain operating expenses. I do agree thought that MIT won't lose much money online. This is a great PR tool and could be expensed as such if they want I'm sure. Also it might attract people to pay for a course or two depending on what they are interested in.

Personally, it makes me sad when I see readers not care about the day or realize its significance. The events of 9/11 were one of the most significant of this country's history. I just hope it doesn't turn into another Labor Day-like weekend excuse for tourism to push school back even later, Hallmark selling crap, and people getting drunk without remembering why the country is mourning.
My prayers go out to those NOT affected by 9/11, may they find peace in their souls and find the spirit of humanitarianism that many others have found.
