I think this will actually help VOIP in the long run... at least it takes away one of the major complaints that phone companies crying unfair and states trying to tax VOIP have brought up!
I remember one of the project managers saying that the thought was to eventually cycle the G5 towers into labs on campus anyway. So they'll have a supercomputer and kick-ass lab machines.:)
Microsoft's David Fester said 'Windows is about choice - you can mix and match software and music player stuff. We believe you should have the same choice when it comes to music services.' in regards to HP deciding to go with iPod technology.
There you have it folks, MS should change because Windows is about choice!
To celebrate this next level of anti-piracy lunacy, the RIAA is going to release a new version of the Beastie Boys video starring real live RIAA Enforcers. (Paying all appropriate royalties, of course.)

Having worked at a college bookstore, I can tell you a few "trade secrets." Any bookstore in their right mind prefers to sell used books, it's just easier in many ways. Now, two big things conspire to keep bookstores from buying back your texts. Number one, it is often very difficult to get professors to order books on time. If a bookstore doesn't have a request from the prof, they can't buy the book back from you. Second, publishers are changing editions on average once every 2 years (average!!). Publishers do not make money on used texts, therefore they update books constantly to keep the supply of used books to a minimum.
I always had a skeptical view of the university bookstore until I worked there!
Please note, however, that we will continue our review of the issues you raised and we reserve the right to refile the complaint against Mrs. Ward if and when circumstances warrant," Colin J. Zick, the Foley Hoag lawyer, wrote to Beeler.
In other words: OK, maybe we were wrong, but we reserve the right to punish you for our fsckup!
My point is that some of the specs on the G5 systems (i.e. memory capacity, FSB) simply can't be had in current PC's, no matter how much $$ you throw down.
Great specs, love to have one for myself.
Some observations:
[IEEE 1394] but not Firewire 800
[3.0 Gig Max] 5Gb less than the G5
[400 Front Side Bus] G5 has up to 1000 MHz
[GeForce FX 5600] doesn't have dual digital, unless you count the s-video?
No PCI-X.
I may be wrong, but looks like both the 8201BL PHY and AC101L PHY ethernet chipsets were 10/100 Mb only. Couldn't find anything on ASUS' site to confirm/deny this, though.
To be fair, the memory that the G5 can handle is impossible on any current PCs, so there's no way to compare. Yes, this may be all nit-pickey. Bottom line is run what you want to.:)
Couple questions: Does the ASUS have Firewire 400 and 800 built in? USB 2.0? Why did you go with a DVD ROM instead of a DVD burner? What about fans (case and processor)? Does the "midrange" video support dual digital displays? How fast is the FSB on the mobo? Max RAM on the mobo? Digital sound input/output? PCI-X slots? AGP 8x? Gigabit ethernet? Serial ATA?
It sounds like a great system, but I want to make sure it's an even comparison to what the G5 is offering, otherwise price is irrelavant.
I think Sen. Oral Hatch also suggested that jay-walkers have their legs sawn off with dull, rusty butter knives.
This is all until there's a glitch on his machine that wipes it out.
I assume that you're talking about Apple no longer including floppies. Uh, and Dell?
Accepting standards, then moving on, is a LOT different than not accepting them in the first place. Apple just happens to be ahead of the curve most of the time. Floppies have only held on as long as they have in the PC world because M$ required them for PCs to say "Made for Windows XX".
My 2 cents:
Imagine driving into a gas station and seeing a sign that reads, "Gas is $X per gallon, but you might not be entitled to an entire gallon for that price depending on the time of day, and you're especially not allowed to carpool." Most of us would likely take our business elsewhere.
If BW is a commodity, and if your connection is capped, it is impossible to "steal" more than your fair share.
DSL is different, you aren't sharing a subnet with neighbors in the same way that you are with a cable modem. You get your IP from the ISP's DHCP server, not the modem.
I read about this technology about 10 years ago, in Popular Science I think, which would have been before Spheral Solar aquired the patent. Glad someone picked the ball back up!
Having a stake in both sides of the fence would allow Sony to have say in what shape content delivery would take in the future. Spinning off the musak division would leave them in a position where they would just have to take what is handed to them from whoever is providing content.
Window will have gone through 2-3 major "upgrades" and dozens of service packs. Who knows what Windows 2005 (tm) will look like? 2006? 2007? Better to teach kids computer literacy, rahter than the blind faith that computers will always look like the current incarnation of one particular operating system.
I think he was responding to ". . . maybe if the computers were cheaper people would put money into security. . ."
How about the people who make the billionares? If people would only stop buying music!

I think he was talking about actual apps that normally come with Gnome, not Gnome itself. (You can run many Gnome apps in KDE.)
I saw the other day that Gentoo, for one, has a note on their site saying that a distro will be available soon for G5s.

Done a long time ago (although not with hypertransport :)

The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson was pre-Prey. :)
Great book!
ACTUALLY... you might want to mod the above informative. I have seen quotes that are more expensive for businesses running Windows Servers.
