I have to disagree and I'll use the 3GS as my example. It came out in June 2009 with iOS 3.0 and it's still being supported in 2012 with iOS 5.0.1. Yes it doesn't have a few features supported, some of which will be, in Apple's mind, to help distinguish products but for the most part shares all the improvements made over two major version updates.
Now take a look at Android handsets. Not Android but the manufacturers that use it. They all have varying support for the latest version of Android with some shipping older versions months after a newer one has been released and many simply not offering updates. I fully admit this isn't up-to-date but here's what I read some time ago (link).
Most manufacturers are sucky in some shape or form, personally I find Apple pretty decent and from my direct experiences better than Nokia and LG.
This is why I chose the iPhone over others, this being just one example of who mobile users were typically treated pre Apple.
Apple released the 3G in July 2008 and it received iOS updates until November 2010, approximately 6 months after being discontinued so around 2.5 years of support. Compare that to the XPeria X8 mentioned which on release used a one year old OS 1.6, when 2.2 had been out for around half a year and then they assume you should be grateful when they 'upgrade' you to another obsolete version. I'm not saying Apple are as pure as snow but when it comes to mobiles they highlighted most over manufacturers laziness in my mind.
As a 3GS owner I'm told iOS 5, with all sorts of decent enhancements over iOS4, will be available to me. So unless it turns out it's not available to the 8GB version for some odd reason that's a good couple of years support there too. Not one of my previous phones with LG, Samsung or even Nokia received anything like that.
In that case... I hereby pronounce America victorious on their war on tourism. I know I have no intention of going there any time soon because of how they treat visitors.
Would you care to expand on this? iOS apps can have ads in them, as many free apps do, so I fail to see why that is somehow a distinction between the two platforms.
Well that headline is misleading at best I'd say. I suggest reading pwn2own day one: Safari, IE8 fall, Chrome unchallenged in which it states that both Safari and IE fell at the first attempt, clearly it was a matter of nothing more than the ordering. Apologies for disturbing all the anti-apple ranting but both systems are weak.
Please feel free to resume posting uninformed comments now.
No, that to me indicates you should launch Steam every so often to ensure it is up-to-date. I'm on a mac too but I get the same options as Agret did. It observed I had no network connection and asked if I wanted to start in offline mode.
Over 100 replies and not one person has commented on the fact that clearly Citibank have crap security procedures. According to the article they first accept somebody claiming to be the credit card holder without authentication and then won't re-open the claim after they've been told they've been suckered. Glad I'm not an account holder with those muppets.
That really doesn't bode well for your average linux program then. I've had to learn a few new tricks just to use a standard 10" netbook and I'm talking about configuration screens - not even some esoteric application.
but closing your eyes and wishing really hard isn't a viable option either. When it comes to stuff like this it's as if everybody has access to Pandora's box and you're wanting everybody to a) not open it and b) not abuse it if they have opened it. This sort of thing needs to be publicised so that the developers of browsers help to plug the holes they didn't think of when they first designed these mechanisms.
Everybody keeps talking about how the player should have used it but wasn't he just couriering for his alliance? I don't play EVE but if he used them there is no way to turn them back into PLEX I assume.
Internet + computer. The majority of machines will not be purchased from the ISP and there is no need to even have an ISP if you don't want internet connectivity.
Cable + TV. See above.
and so on. The most suitable of your examples would probably be the phone (assuming you meant mobile phone and very much dependent on the system in place in a particular country). If you want an expensive phone you'll probably pay an initial fee and then you have your monthly payments on top of that. Even then it breaks down. You're paying an initial fee because they are using the phone, which is manufactured and sold by a totally separate company in most cases, as a sweetener to bring you to their network (this is very much dependent on the business model used which differs by country). In your examples there is rarely any link between the two companies. A more similar example might be purchasing an xbox 360 and then their subscription for online play (I think I have that correct - don't own a console so could be wrong) but again, you don't need to pay the subscription.
What little I've read about Blizzard recently it seems the top guy is all about milking their customer base for every penny they have. I can't comment on WoW but I'd suspect they're possibly money grabbing buggers too.
Well I can't speak for your 5 year's worth of painful experience - all I can say is this hasn't been mirrored in my use of the language.
As for the insinuation that I'm biologist speaking our of my depth. I will have you know that the code I am referring has been tested against many other simulation packages in the same area, with no discrepancies (beyond the typical bug) discovered. I won't even bother to inform you of my background as there is clearly no point.
It's obvious you don't like Java and your clients are welcome to listen to your advice. I for one believe some of that is probably down to the skill of the supposed developer. Stick to what you feel comfortable with - html.

Finally somebody with a little clarity! I haven't read every comment in this thread but a pretty big sample and what almost every person (with very few exceptions) seems to be forgetting is that we don't represent the majority type of user. If you're machine is spending a significant amount of its time compiling or you ponder what RAID setup to use then you're not the common user!
A laptop will be more than sufficient for the average user these days. I'm not saying the article isn't total rubbish but my seriously, some of the people here have to get a grip. We're tech geeks and our requirements from a computer aren't the same as Joe public.

Doubtful, aren't they simply a customer with an exclusive agreement rather than an investor with which responsibility might fall?
In that case... I hereby pronounce America victorious on their war on tourism. I know I have no intention of going there any time soon because of how they treat visitors.
In fairness we've been hearing about America fighting the war on terror for years now so it's an easy mistake to make :-P
we would be on Mars by now getting groped by TSA guards.
:-P
Fixed it for you

Has anybody considered that maybe this is exactly the sort of thing children do if they've been raised by somebody that works for Fox News?
murdered? Somebody is being kind ;-)

Then it brings the pain, either with a standard 12.7mm caliber machine-gun, a 40mm automatic grenade launcher upgrade...
Probably like more than just a look with that upgrade. I would think even aliens would have to think twice at taking on a grenade launcher.

Which is why the author of the linked article also asked people to "Stop giving quality reviews to broken games".

Well in fairness haven't linux users been waiting longer? Seems to me Microsoft haven't exactly been forging ahead when it comes to 64bit.
Assuming the wikipedia entry for TrueType hasn't been buggered about with then it's summary (there is no article) that is confused.
wow, using Microsoft products has left you bitter!

I'm sorry but those examples are terrible.

It probably has more to do with the fact that DAB radios haven't been standard equipment in most cars until only about a year ago
Are you sure about this?
from the linked article:
and the government says it is working with car manufacturers to make digital radios standard in cars by 2013
(bold part is my emphasis)
The cops tried to goad him...
You're not suggesting the police were agitating the situation are you? (~4:15 in audio recording in the independent link) ;)
