As part of my literature survey I found an academic perspective that seemed to indicate that open source projects do not reach the mainstream because the developers tend to listen only to their smartest customers.
Due to the vast speed of development any literature from the past century is likely to be obsolete, even though it's only two years away.
Furthermore it's untrue that Free Software in general lacks detailed documentation or easy to use interfaces. Any generalization of that sort qualifies the author as biased against FS.
Not because we are stupid, but who has the time to get informed about every issue in all strata of government (city, county, state, federal)?
No, that is not the point. The point is, it was too expensive to get the peoples decisions for every single item. But nowadays widespread electronic communication has obsoleted the need for representatives -- who usually aren't informed either.
Type "" and then "~.", repeat the last step if it doesn't work. Read man rsh if you want to know what you are doing. One reason why I prefer telnet over [rs]sh.
Hey moderators, this is not "Interesting" but "Flamebait" or "Troll" instead:
Horrible, those damn bastards might install patches to keep worms from spreading like Code Red and Nimda, because people who pirate their software typically aren't smart enough to secure it. Those bastards!

If M$ had any incentive to fight worms and viruses they could well do that without breaking into customers pc's. For example by simply shipping their $oftware with more secure default settings.
Another one of those newbies who can't tell a desktop environment from a window manager.
A wm is essential to use X -- though you can open windows in plain X it gets hard to move them -- a desktop environment adds possibility nifty but completely optional features
Could this be the way most online games will be played (and paid for) in the future?
I don't think so. There are other games where the value doesn't regularly degrade but grows instead. They are called online banking.
[...] you just need to re-type all the data back in
That's stupid! You can simply search for the rotted bits and replace them.
When can we expect Y Windows to be released?
Don't we have it already? Everytime I see a Windows PC I ask myself "Y Windows?"
One could even say, that "X-Windows" (BTW: What does the X stand for? uniX? Xor?) is a clear sign [...]
Not quite. Though commonly used X-Windows is just a colloquial abbreviation. The correct name is "X Window System"
but I have a hard time seeing a judge buying it.
If the judge doesn't buy it, M$ will buy the judge.
You can integrate in software, even the pocket calculator I bought in the early nineties could.

Further, it can make it a business issue for the company if it doesn't care by making it lose sales elsewhere.
This only works if the targetted companies clients have some morals, ie not with M$.
I don't think he meant "Hey, I just got fired! I'll sabotage the satellite!"
;)
Maybe the satellite was upset that he got fired and sabotaged the rocket
governemnt should not be the soul controller
Now they want to control our souls?
I didn't even know they were able to detect it.
And, BTW why shall the weather be with the governement?

that have little else on their agenda, and spring at the chance to use their car
so if they don't have to return DVD's they'll find another stupid reason to waste oil. Thus junk DVD's don't save any fuel.

And you should probably ask Mrs. Manners for some netiquette lessons.
That's why I added the warning, I know you guys have no sense of humour.
A PC in a tablet so that they can spy on us from the inside. And their new slogan will be:
"A PC in every stomach"
(Slashdot Warning: the above text is satirical)
I also hope that page ends the debates once and for all!
It doesn't, because comparing vi to emacs is like comparing ed to vi, and here's the result:
ed vs. vi

Now, KDE doesn't start, even after reinstalling it three times and reinstalling X once.
;)
What do you expect trying to fix a GNU system the WhineyOS way
Funny that you list ROUS here because this is also the last name of a "pathologist who discovered viruses that cause tumors" (from WordNet 1.7)
You really think that if he couldn't get a gun he wouldn't use something else?
Snipers kill from the distance, what else could they use but guns? Bows and arrows? Spears?
This "guns don't kill people" stuff is simply ridiculous. A lame excuse for people who don't want to recognize the facts.
No way, you won't profit from my contributions to slashdot.
ACK, it would be 24%, because land masses take up 29% of the earths surface.
sure, and BTW movie theatres have already been killed by the TV as we all know.
