All Clean Flicks is doing is adding a value to the original product and then selling the original version along with thier value added version. If they can make more money from this more power to them. The original version still gets sold, and the makers of this still make the same amount of money they original would of.
Thier are whole segments of the computer industry that are based on taking software modifing it and then reselling the value added version.
Playboy already release a version of thier magazine with just the article. This was a few years ago when I worked in a college university library, so I don't know if they still do.
And if you are looking for other examples, the computer industry has whole markets based on this. They take software add features and abailities to it and then resell the whole package to the user.
Back when DVD were first coming out this was one of the selling points they were pushing.
The claim was that movie companies would be producing multiple rating version of the movie and releaseing the on the same disc. Then you as the consumer could pick what rating you wanted to see, and the player would skip the parts marked as being of a higher rating.
This would be no different from your book example only if you reprinted the book with your changes, then put a big sticker on it saying theses had your changes and then included a copy of the original book, shrunk wrapped but with a big sticker on the front saying it may not be sold without the copy, attached the back of the book.
If you did all that then why should you need O'Reilly permission. Also by your thinking I would need permission to make any marks in the book such as correcting parts, or adding additional information for my own sake.
Now if you are going with software, this happens all the time. Companies purchase a software package, make additions/corrections to it and resell it.
And by the way when TV version are sold it is not the original director doing the editing they hire someone else, and the movie studio could care less what the director would want. Same with the pan-and-scan version, and the airplane version.
Partly right he did claim this then he back down and started to claim that he invented marketing and selling on the web. He then started to back down on this and said that he wrote the laws that allowed marketing and selling of mechandise on the internet.
The irony is that no one beside Yahoo's management cares what Yahoo looks like. The site's tremendous success is due to the service it provides, not to the beauty of its visual design (which is non-existent).
So according to him if yahoo was just a single column of words and link, it would have the same use of it currently does. No way, people would complain, find it hard to naviagate to the services and leave. Users do care about the looks, and don't like change.
As for CSS yes yahoo still is tring to support non-CSS enabled browsers, why should they write two versions; one for CSS enabled browsers and a second for thoses that don't?
It not the number of crashes or other incidents that have occured in that area, it is that the wreckage of them have not been found that gave it the reputation.

Back when I used to play the Pen and Paper version of AD&D, quite just as 2nd ed rules where coming out, it was hard to get a high level character. After playing for around 3 years me and my 7 friends were only in thier mid-teens.
Have they changed the 3rd ed rules so much that level 20+ rules are needed?
Or are theses rules just for computer based gaming where level 20+ is easy.
And how would they know that is not some software warning me to take some medicine I need to take to live?
This only works for businesses that have a set of software that they only allow to run. Good time to be a software developer since your computer would need to be free so that you can test your software.
And while it would prevent some viruses it would prevent most, and it would not prevent any of the microsoft word type viruses.
With this case it sounds like my deal with my stock broker.
I purchase stock which my stock broker(a safe and trusted party) holds for me, while I speculate on what the price of the stock will do. If the price of my collectible stock increases and I decide to sell, someones get my stock certificates. During that complete time I have never seen the certificates.
The better argument would be, what if microsoft said that you could only use microsoft brand keyboards and mice with microsoft windows.
Since in addition to the drivers they provide all the API that interact with thoses drivers and send signal to the programs.
So if you want to produce a mouse/keyboard you would have to totaly rewrite the API that provide that, and then distribute that with your product.
The problem is where to stick them. The ones of thoses I have seen in europe have been on streets filled with apartments, for the equivant in the US you would need someplace like NYC or for most of the US some shopping center, and most places already have stores renting videos so they would not want the competition.
Not really sure about all of that, I think it is more to keep the prices regulated. In China and that area the discs are alot cheaper because of peoples earning, same somewhat as compared to the US.
The place were it does make a difference is that alot of TV season DVD series are released in Europe before the states, and for cheaper the X-files season 8 is available in Europe, while the US just recently got season 5. Also I have seen them for sale for around $80 US.
As for the other point.
I live in Germany and I can see the English version of the films as they are released in the US or at the worst they are released with in a week. Granted this is only films that are planned as popular. Same as in France.
Now if you want to see the movie in the German language it takes 6-9 months or longer.
I was up in Holland over the weekend, and saw a store that had the Lord of the Rings DVD, don't know what language or region. So they are available.
The other thing that is really killing this region stuff is Internet shopping. Currently it is just as easy to shop from a store in the UK as it is for one 3 states over. The biggest problem being shipping, but if someone really wants stuff they can get it.
This article is talking about to different things and then saying they are the same.
First are the direct marketing from honest companies that are truely opt-in with are send with thier name attached to them.
Theses types I don't really don't mind, since I have agreed to them, and in many cases are tailored to my interested. I do want to know if a favorite author has released a new book or if a place is having a sale on items I purchase.
The second type are SPAM, no details needed.
This article is just combining theses two and saying that SPAM is great because I like knowing about stuff I signed up for.
For the cost of $25 you get a great practical joke.
Create a true ad but bound to not be used(Selling packs of 25cent gum for $50 + $10 for shipping/handleing) and then use the address of the person you want to play the joke on as the address to send to.
Then submit to one of theses companies and watch the anguish on the face of that person as the replys come in.
Besides the worst that could happen is that a few people send him the money and he gets a profit.
Tivo is different, when you purchase the Tivo you are only given X amount of hours, any of that other stuff is stored above the X hours. No product loss.
The only way for this to be similar is if when you purchased a hard drive that had storage above what was on the box that only the pd could get to.

The problem with any of the electronic games is that they start with a fresh deck for each game. Easy to count, but worthless for switching the odds in your favor.
To do that with a roulette table or any spinning game is get the speed of the ball and the in the case of roulette the table.
To counter this all current roulette tables have bumps in them to add some randomness in where they land.
The best place this would work is with thoses games where where you pick the dollar and girl spins a disc behind her. However I think they require that all bets be placed before the spin starts.
This is still going on but now they are just ignoring actually sending a product they are just sending a bill to the accounts-payable. USPS send has sent a couple of warning about it.
Perfect and large diamonds are rare.
However regular diamonds are not, they are alot like oil, plentiful all over the world. Just hard to get in some places then in others. Also debeers has vast quantities so that if someone tries to market diamonds of a certain quality they flood the market driving down prices and making it un-resonable that someone will attempt to compete against them. The russians tried this and failed.
If you want to go dig diamonds the US has a park that allows you to do that. Thier are alot of rumor about this places including that debeers used thier power to close down the area from normal mining and make it a national park. Probabably some truth to that, the US just did that again with clean coal after some people who make thier fortunes from selling clean coal to the US did not want us to mine our own.
