For the US students being passed over yes it has been happening and increasing the last 2-3 years.
It is really bad in California where you have been getting some news about it, even heard about it where I live in Europe.
The reason is that that foreign students pay the full tuition costs and since states have been cutting funding the foreign students are cash cows.
You could make the case that with the money they are paying they are not taking slots that US students would of had because the slots would not exist but really what is happening is the school has a certain number of slots and if they get them filled by people who are paying full costs then those people are going to get in.

With FB it is easy to setup local group, and invite people, or for them to find it, of similar interested and then all those people plan, talk about or support the topic.
Until something new can get everyone to switch over to that system there is no value in me, a single person, switching to that new site. Even in the event that facebook does something totally stupid to upset the users it will not loose that many because the abaility it provides for communication is worth some hassles.

The patent is for a system where you can setup condition on the gifts you are given and before they are shipped allows you to change them, even sending you notification on what the original item was.
For example, person X gives you a some new book, you have previously setup a condition that all gifts get converted to gift cards. You receive notification that they sent you the book and you can then use the gift card to purchase anything you want.
I guess it saves some time and money of shipping the product back but who is really going to use it?

  4. Re:Fairly well known issue on New Music Boss, Worse Than Old Music Boss · · Score: 1

You need to look at what self publishing book writers actually make, the majority make only a few hundred dollars per book if they are lucky and the book is well written. A few thousand dollars is what a book writer use to get if they got published and did not have a major best seller.
For the self published book writer they have to decide if they are going to get an editor, a cover designer and a layout artist which all cost money. Do that all your self and you are taking time away from what you do, write books, and have to spend time doing and learning those other skills.
Now for actual numbers, based on Kindle info, last year there there were around 1000 self publishers that sold over 800 books a month; and they are not the majority. Some of those can actually make a living. The majority of self publishers will be lucky if they make a few thousand a year.
Your economic idea will not work out and will be even worse for small market items, such as technical books, which is already a very small market where the majority of writer are lucky if they make a few thousand dollars and that is since they are published.
With the publishers gone there are going to be few high technical books and we will have to hope for a come back of the sponsored writer.

That Dutch law would probably have a really good chance of being passed in the USA.
The problem with the bills that have been submitted in the USA use a different definition of net neutrality than you see in the Dutch and other laws.
The Dutch law limits blocking protocols unless they are don't to all, in the USA the bills have been more about not being able to block sites or to provide sites. So under the USA bills ISPs would not beable to block a site to MANBLA or even SPAM that followed the rules on the CANSPAM law. Under the Dutch law ISPs cannot block or charge extra for voice calling that they are not providing.
BTW the reason for the MANBLA reference is because that organization is one of the bigger supportors of the net neutrallities laws in the USA they have members that have provided the wording for the various bills and have setup web sites and ads advocating net neutrallity under new organizations.

However security offices got involved and started locking down Unix servers so to open a simple port was a multi-month process if you were lucky. With the Microsoft box there was very limit security lockdown so we started to get a lot more of those; also the prices for the Microsoft boxes were a lot cheaper so it was quicker to get purchased.
